Are any of you gout sufferers? I am in the middle of a VERY painful episode of gout and I think it's bad enough this time for me to actually do something about it!! I have had it a couple of times in the past, but nothing like this - I can't get my shoes on and it's waking me up in the night with severe pain. I read that cold feet can bring it on and I think that's what happened this time. I've been doing some research and it says that being overweight contributes to it, so I guess I'd better get serious about watching what I eat. It also recommends exercise, but walking is not an option until this clears up. I guess it is a build up of uric acid in your joints. With me, it is always the toe next to the big toe. Anyone else out there have it?

Hmmm....gout is usually caused by a hereditary defect in purine metabolism. My DH has gout and takes medication for it. He had a couple of bad attacks several years apart and finally had a metabolic workup which involves bloodwork and a 24 hour urine collection. Since his uric acid was high in both his urine and his blood he was put on medication and hasn't had any problems since. I'm a big believer in dietary control when possible but I don't think it's all that effective for gout. I'm a urology nurse so...Drink plenty of water--enough that you PUT OUT at least 2 liters of urine a day. Some kidney stones are made of uric acid and if you think your toe hurts..........

Somebody I know does control hers by drinking cherry juice. Also I seem to recall that high doses of Vit C and niacin can cause gout problems too.

My dad gets gout also and swears by the cherry remedy. We finally got him to replace his morning OJ with cherry juice as a preventative solution so now his attacks are a lot less frequent - like once a year or so.

I wonder about the cranberry too. I like cranberry juice and it makes sense that it would affect this problem because I know it helps for bladder infections. I'll have to look into that - I really like to drink cranberry juice!

I'm wondering if cranberry pills would aid in helping to ease it by aiding the bladder once you get things going other wise :/ It sounds so painful, I wouldn't want you to get a UTI or anything from all of that passing through the system

I read that about the aspirin too - fortunately, I don't take aspirin for pain, so I escaped that. I will up the fluids and see if that helps. Loving the frozen cherry smoothies - the pure cherry juice is a bit much though!

He-he-he-he-he...nice try Sherri! Hope the dark cherries provide quick relief. For me it took a while to get the uric acid out of my system...but I didn't mind...the cherries are a great treat.
I just read this on MedicineNet.com "Patients should avoid aspirin containing medications, when possible, because aspirin prevents kidney excretion of uric acid", which is something I didn't know. I think I probably would have had less pain w/gout if I hadn't taken pain meds. The site also says to increase fluid intake, which will also help decrease risk of kidney stone formation. Hope to hear you're on the mend!

Well I'm going to try to cherry remedy today. I went to Aberdeen and found both organic cherry juice and frozen dark cherries at Safeway. Sounds like a pretty tasty cure to me! (I wonder if those chocolate covered cherry bon bons would work - no - that's probably what got me into this situation in the first place!)

Epsom salts foot soaks can help dissolve the gout crystals. As hot as you can stand. I know that the dark cherrys & juice work.

My mom gets it a couple times a year and her father and brother would get it also. The doctor told her that it can be hereditary. She eats your average diet and sips a glass of wine here or there. She does take a med for it everyday to relive the attacks. I thought for a while I had it in my big toe but it seems it was a pinched nerve in my lower back. After a series of steroid shots the pain disappeared. I know that my Grandpa and mom drink dark cherry juice to help relive it also. Mom also drinks lots of water to flush her system when the attacks come on.

That's funny Shirley! It wasn't St. Pete's was it? I was telling my daughter about this thread and she said "Must have been that glass of Bailey's you had at Christmas" That's the last time I had any alcohol at all - so I know it's not that. I must be like your dh (except for the thin part!)

But that made me think of this little old priest who was at Hospital I worked at for 21 years, He was always happy and he had gout all the time, he would come down to the Pharmacy to get med in his slippers ,because he couldnt get his shoes on either. So Im thinking he was nippin the alter wine a bit.
We had this little old nun along time ago that was nippin the alter wine,She was in charge of the wine and we stored it in the Pharmacy,so the head nun had to give her a different job to do. ROFL That wine tasted so bad. I broke a gallon of it one day and it was under a counter, WOW it smelled up the whole 2nd floor of the hosp, not to mention the pharm. ROFL

My Dh had a bout with gout(that rhymes hehe)
and he doesnt drink, hes thin, doesnt eat sweets or fatty foods.
We dont eat red meat, and as much organic as we can get.
So Im not sure why he got it. but it wasnt because he did any of the things that they say causes it. to weird
mikesgirl Posted - Jan 31 2008 : 3:09:09 PM
Man, this is so weird - about the diet. I AM overweight, but I don't even BUY high fat foods because dh is so obsessed with what he eats. Most of my extra weight comes from eating too MUCH food - not bad food. Well, whatever the reason, I need to deal with it because it's not fun. Thanks Jenny for the well wishes!

Wow - sounds like my diet has been seriously bad doesn't it? Well, if anything is going to shock me into straightening out, it will be the pain this gout has brought on - it REALLY hurts! The funny thing is I don't drink at all, and I maybe have red meat once a month. Some of the research I did said seafood can bring it on too, and I am guilty of eating seafood often so maybe that contributed to it. I went to three different grocery stores today to find frozen cherries and NONE of them had them! I did e-mail the link to the Woodstock Farms, and asked if they have an outlet near here. I guess I'm going to have to go to the big city! Thanks for all your advice - I'm going to try it all.

We had a friend who suffered from gout and he always knew when he'd been "bad" - too much red meat (like, the whole steak or double burger serving) or too much booze, sometimes as little as 2 drinks can trigger it. For him, something as simple steak dinner and a couple of cocktails makes for sore tootsies. There is a prescription medicine for it but there are side effects to the liver or kidneys if you use it too much. From what I have heard, it's more about learning what foods or alcohol (gin vs. rum, for instance) are your own triggers...and avoiding them as much as possible. Good luck!

Sherri the brand I buy is Woodstock Farms...the store I get it from is local, so that doesn't help you much.
Here's the link so you can see what the product looks like.

My grandpa had gout and it was brought on by high fatty foods. He had the worse time when he ate ice-cream.

Well Julie at least you made me laugh this morning - old men who drink a lot huh? Well, I must be the exception too! Chendra, I will try your dietary suggestions. I have never seen organic dark cherries in the freezer case, but I will look next time I go to Trader Joes. What kind of store do you buy yours at? I read that cherries can help. Thanks for the ideas ladies!

I had this in my toe in College. I got some meds for it and never had anymore trouble. Not sure what to suggest.

Dr. Told me usually only old men who drink a lot get this. At the time I was not overweight and NEVER had had anything to drink. Just a random thing I guess.

Eat dark cherries...I buy organic frozen & use them in smoothies or just to snack on. Definately look into a nutrition program...most dealing with gout discuss eliminating excess fats, red meats, heavy meals, alcohol, etc. Hope you find healing soon...painful feet can be so debilitating.
