I had vibrant light red hair all my life until my early 40's when it turned dark and dull YUCK!!!! So I started dying it. I missed my normal hue and it made me feel spritely and girlish again...
I was just looking at my dark auburn roots with the silver strands and worrying about what all of the dye chemicals were doing to my body and wishing that the thick silver hair would all come in at once! I don't so much mind getting older, it's this muddy patch in the middle  that makes me feel rotten. I'm looking for more natural ways to dye my mop now.
So do you/are you going to cover the grey? just curious. I won't tell, honest

I am still in the "debating" Stage. I colored my hair blonde for most of my adult life. Last year I let it go natural . . . am shocked at how dark it became over the years . . . but it also came with a lot of gray. I still haven't decided whether to color the gray or not. It isn't too bad yet, but I am not sure I am ready to be a salt and pepper lady at 44! If it is too solid, I may opt for some highlights, then you can't tell what is gray and what is highlights. But I do love not worrying about the stupid "dye line" anymore like I had to worry about every few weeks before. I am more comfortable with who I am than in the past, so the idea of a few gray hairs doesn't really freak me out. So we shall see what happens!

I'm 51, and I see a lot of gray around my face and in my part every time my roots grow out. I go to the hair salon and let my stylist worry about the chemicals. I get them once every six weeks, she has to worry about them several times a day.
I've thought about letting it grow out, but as long as I am working in a youth-oriented job (I was told a few weeks ago that the average age of someone in the IT profession is about 36) I can't afford to go around looking older than I feel. And I feel like I am about 26 most of the time. Except when my knees hurt and I feel like I am 80.

I used to dye my hair with all-natural henna (to rev up the red), and I was thinking of trying it again - the grays are growing more numerous these days, but I'm not ready to give up on auburn just yet! Like Kate, my scalp itched like crazy right after each dye. My natural color is dark brown, and the gray (White) is in the front and top. Kinda like a skunk! However, it troubled me that I was going in the direction of natural and organic other than my hair, plus I really didn't think the brown would look good on my aging face. Due to health problems which might have been due to chemical issues, I decided to quit... and had a diluted dye applied for about a year, then quit and got my hair cut into layers at the same time. It's all natural now, and I don't miss the color a bit. My DH always liked gray hair, so it's great as far as he's concerned.

I inherited my Dad's hair, and it is going grey pretty fast. He was completely grey by fifty. (thanks to me!!)LOL!
I do color mine and I am growing it out too. I will never go short again. (never NEVER get a hair cut on a hot day when you are frustrated by a bad hair day)
Over the past year, I have noticed every time I "refresh" the color, my poor scalp goes nuts and itches like crazy, so I am thinking I have to give up coloring it.
On the flip side, if my hair is half as beautiful as my Dad's silvery-white grey, then I will be thrilled.
Now if it would just grow!

I am terribly adventurous and a teeny bit vain. Been coloring my hair for years and have had everything from hot pink to calico kitty! LOL But in all seriousness...I color because it gives me a "boost". I feel pretty with my blonde locks, as opposed to my mousy brown natural color. Thankfully no gray yet, but I have vowed to "never go gray"- if ya know what I mean.

I just cut mine off this summer and after some debate, decided to keep it short. It is "au natural" but I do use products to make it shiny and healthy. I also got a natural gloss done at a local "healthy" salon. It made it really shiny and perty!! I also had some natural hi-lights come out in the sun over the summer, which was a suprise to me since I haven't seen my natural hair color since I was 16. LOL!!! |

I have "big" hair too - the longer it is the better- more weight makes it not so bad. I wear it in a MJ braid on the side most of the time- sure wish my locks were as long as hers!

I am in the process of growing mine out. My hair is dye resistant and it was just too irritating to keep up. I am considering highlighting to help the grown out portion blend in a little.

Has anyone else noticed that the greys are twice as thick as the regular color hair?? I already had thick hair, but boy those greys are making my hair even bigger! haha

LOL, I did the same thing...I HATE growing my hair out , but really didn't like it short this time. There was the point that no matter what I did with it it would curl into my eyes, nose, mouth. It's chin length now and I like it . I'm glad that my hair is coming in thick and silver, not yellow grey too =)

Let mine go a while back. It's just to hard to keep up with dying it. So it's salt and pepper now and depending on the light MORE salt than pepper. I am really, really grateful to have white-gray rather than yellow-gray hair. I cut it really short, but now am growing it back out so I can put it in a pony tail. The length is driving me crazy more than the color!

i just let my greys shine on.. after all i have earned them all. i don't really mind the grey, it looks like i spent a ton of money having my hair frosted at the salon for now.

Ton-O-Grey over here! I have white shocks along my ears and loads and loads of grey all over. Sooooo don't care...so can't be bothered with dying it. I can barely be bothered with cutting it! Sheesh can't even imagine the headaches of dying it. I'm 42 and on several occasions have been asked if I'm my children's grandmother. LOL!!!We are such a society that worships youth and someone's idea of beauty. Can't go there either. It is whatever makes you happy and feel comfy in your skin. For me that is being as natural as possible..If the truth be known, I'm just too lazy to care! hahaha.

I don't have a lot of grey hair yet (I'm 52), but I do color it. My hair is so fine and limp, so coloring gives it texture and body. I also do not like my natural color (mousy brown), so I color it blonde. I do just the highlighting, so I don't have to get it done so often. It is just enough to give my hair body and color. Maybe when I am all grey, it will have the coarseness to give me body, and then I won't have to dye it anymore. I think you should do what makes you feel good, and not worry about other's feeling about it. |

I am 49 and don't dye mine. I am actually pretty lucky to not have alot of grey...a little in front of my ears and a few mixed in from the top..no streaks or big spots..my hair still appears really dark brown (most people call it black but it isn't really) I don't plan to ever dye it since I figure at 49 if this is all I have it will be awhile before it is alot...I honestly don't know if I would anyhow...I am just not the type.
My younger sister and mom both got grey early and have dyed their hair for years. I guess I take after my grandma on my dad's side. She died at 90 with alot more brown than grey hair. That is my plan..only I think I will live an extra 10 years..haha.

Hi,
I hate to admit this, but I do dye my hair, despite all the other healthy things I do!
I'm 44 and just don't want to look like my mother yet. My kids are 15, 17 and 19, and I don't want to look like their grandma!
There will come a time when I'll have to stop, but right now I'm not ready. I do wonder how it will look as it's growing out, though. (although I'm not far off my natural colour)
There is a new book out called "Going Gray" by Anne Kreamer that talks about this, she was on TV this week, very interesting.

I am only 27,but I was a Gestational Surrogate and unfortunatley put ALOT of hormones and chemicals in my body, that being said, I have a bit of grey.My eyelashes are also mostly white on myleft eye. I do use mascara, but I dont think I'll dye my hair. I have, but I dont think I will again.I have pondered it alot actually lately.But in the end I am chicken. I kind of think I have earned my grey..... Although I would love to have my full on Red again.

Yep- Me too.
I've earned em but sometimes they make me sad.
My older kids 32.28 and 22 look like they should have a grey haired momma but my younger ones 17 &14 look like they are with their granny~
They NEVER act embarassed and compliment me often but I DO have a mirror!
The hard part is weddings etc. I will from now on be the Older mom- some of their friends' parents are the ages of some of their siblings!! Humbling to say the least.
Grow old gracefully is my goal- but it takes a bit of humbling with me.

I don't dye and won't dye. And only partially because of the chemicals. I have earned every grey hair on my head and I wear them with pride! And believe me it is getting more grey by the minute! My husband is very grey as well (his beard is almost white!) and he would NOT like it if I colored my hair. He's an au naturale kinda guy and has said on more than one occasion he didnt like dyed hair so I never really consider it. I am 48 and I figure by 50 it should be almost completely grey considering the rate it is turning.
