today my 5 year old fell down our stairs head over heals a few times before landing at the bottom of the stairs. We took her to the doctor and a chiropractor she seems to have a whiplash effect happening from it and it through her spine out of whack. She has to go back friday just keep her in your thoughts as she is not supposed to play ruff or do anything that will hurt her more. Try to expalin this to an overly active 5 1/2 year old. Just keep her in your thoughts and send prayers that she will mind mom and the doctor on my being overly active for a few days and careful as she almost falls 4 or 5 times a day with our stairs. We had told her millions of times ( and it does feel like millions) to hold the banister when going down or up the stairs. We have a real plush carpeted stairs and we think that is the problem she thinks the steps are about 2 inches longer than they are due to teh carpet being wrapped around then edge of the stairs. Which makes them look like they have deeper treads than they do. I am hoping she learns from this but I am thinking not as she fell again about 4 hours ago before we went to the chiro.

have a lovely day and may God bless you and keep you safe

Oh, my. I just saw this post; holy mackerel, we parents certainly earn every grey hair we get, don't we? So glad to see you say she is playing like a normal kid again. Sending prayers up for you guys. Hugs, Nance

Hello my two youngest kept falling down the stairs, we also had thick carpeting on them, we have since ripped it out. But at one point we did use baby gates on the stairs. We used a kind that screwed into the wall instead of using tension that way it could not just be knocked over or pushed over. At one point I seriously considered putting them on every 4 stairs that way they could not fall very far if they did fall. These open on the top and swing like a door. They stopped falling about the time I was going to do this so I did not have to plus we removed the carpet around then as well.

Praying for her.
Amy

She still has a shiner but dizzy ness is gone and she is acting like a normal 5 year old playing that is. No numbness or anything like that her neck pain is mostly gone so she is improving each day. I wish she would slow a little as I keep thinking she is going to re injure herself.

We put a gate at the top of our stairs until the girls were both about 7 years old. It prevented them from getting up before us and tumbling down the stairs. I know the fire safety implications of this, but for us we weighed the implications of tumbling down stairs vs. fire hazards and chose the gate, which was right outside our bedroom door.

Please keep watch on your dear one and do everything to prevent another tumble. Kids are resilient, but a body can only take so much.

Ok, Sunshine..............take her to the emergency room and insist that they do a C-spine series. They might have to sedate her to get an accurate series. With the description of her fall and now how much pain she is in, even when you brush her hair...................that is not a good sign.

Does she complain of numbness or tingling anywhere in her body? Any bladder or bowel problem. Any difference in the size of her pupils. Do her pupils get smaller in the light and larger in the dark. Do they do it the same at the same time? How is the swelling to her skull, is she overly sleepy, does her cry sound any different?

She really needs a higher level of assessment than one doctor or chiropractor telling you that she is lucky that she is only 5 years old.

Take her to the ER and demand a better assessment on her Tell them how much it hurts to bend her neck. Tell them of the dizziness caused when she bends her neck. In the least get her to your pediatrician...if you don't have one, then go to the PCMC Primary Children's Medical Center. It is about 45 minutes from where you are.

I'm looking up some information for you right now.

Here is a hospital in your area.....
http://intermountainhealthcare.org/xp/public/primary/

The hospital listed above is a Level 1 pediatic trauma center which means they offer the highest level of emergency services to the pediatric patient. And it is specifically pediatric emergency trauma...............please consider taking her for further immediate assessment!

Bev/BeeHaven Maven is an ER nurse..........email her!! I'll tell her to get over here and read this thread!! Got the farmgirl network going....thanks Alee!!

I'm emailing you my phone number...

It sounds like her equilibrium is still off. Any tipping of the head can cause dizziness. If you are returning to the doctor soon- you might want to mention it.

she cries when I brush her hair as they all have real long hair so brushing pulls on the nap of her neck and she said it makes her dizzy I am not happy with that as it makes no since to me.

I am so sorry to hear about your little one falling (several times.) When my youngest son was little we were in the emergency room for stitches and breaks and the like. They started saying that I was abusing him. Luckily, two of our cousins worked in the ER and vouched that I was really a good mom and he was just a wee bit clumsy. He is now 23 yrs. old and to this day he can look at a knife and get cut! Prayers to you and to her. Love to you, Mommom

Here's hopeing she makes a speedy recovery. I can feel for her - I slipped on carpeted stairs once (I have a bad back from a car accident) and boy did it hurt. We have wood stairs with just the individual runners taped to each stair. Works wonders. ((Hugs)) to the little one and to you and DH.

Poor little girl! I hope she'll be all better real soon. Carpeted stairs are so dangerous. When we first moved into our farmhouse, the stairs were done that way and I often slipped on them, especially when just wearing socks or slippers. Maybe after this, you could consider a safer alternative. We just have bare wood but with some kind of finish that isn't slippery. But first things first! We'll be keeping her recovery in mind at our house.
