I am curious to find out where you all set your heat to at night? Since my daughter and granddaughter moved in, at night I have been setting the temp at 63, but if it were up to me I'd have it set at 58-60. During the day I have it at 66-68. Am I crazy or just hormonal?

Hay there,

I have no furnace so I cut off my space heaters and crawl into a warmed bed with my electric blanket. Waking up and hitting the cold floor is pretty tough on some morning. I have gone into the bathroom where the small heater is that has a temp. gauge and it has shown 38. Last year the water that I left dripping in the tub to keep the pipes from freezing actually froze in the tub and drains during the night and I had several inches of water in the tub. I hope to build my home this summer and I will have REAL heat. Whoo hoo!!!

Oh my goodness! I was reading through this and it looks like last year we kept the heat at 65. And it was COLD last winter (well a few ice storms anyway, which is cold for here). Anyways, it hasn't been nearly as cold here, and I've kept it at 67. Hmmmm I think I am getting.... er...... older ;)

55 night / 65 day. We try to heat with wood as much as we can, and use the oil furnace as supplemental. We hang our laundry on lines near the woodstove, so the heat serves double-duty. Generally, we sleep comfortably with flannel sheets,a down comforter, and one more wool blanket. During TV time, DH and I both sit in the evening, tucked in with our favorite afghans.

65 all the time but supplement with a wood insert in the family room. I closed off the vent in the bedroom and I put a thermometer in there the other day. It was 45. The dog sleeps on the bed with us and the cat is under the covers. I can't stand a warm bedroom. I closed the window about a month ago.

Terri, you're funny! I guess you set it with an alarm clock to wake you up to go put more wood on.

This was an interesting thread to bump back up. During the winter, our temps get down in the 30's (which isn't that cold compared to most of y'all). We keep the temp around 60-65. I'd probably like it higher but I don't like the high propane bill. Our summers are brutal with temps at 90 degrees at night. I keep my house cool between 65-70. We definitely have a high electric bill during the summer.

This is definitely something I think about as I consider going off the electric grid or onto solar. I'm not so concerned about the winter because we have a fireplace that we could use. But I don't know how I'd keep our house cool in the summers.

At night we set the temp at 65 and usually leave the windows open unless it's raining.

We're 72º during the day, 62º during the night. Otherwise, it get too cold. New highly efficient furnace has made all the difference in our house. Love it.

We have an old Radiant Favorite propane heater from the 20's or 30's and if it's really cold, we'll build a fire. It's usually around 65 degrees in the house and when it gets colder I start complaining. That's when I get told to put on a sweatshirt, lol!

we keep ours at 65 day and night. We cannot go any lower with an infant in the house!!! I was hoping we would save money on electric this winter with it "that low," but with our crazy winter, it has still run quite a bit.

I kid you not... ours has been set at 60 degrees round the clock since the chill first set in last fall. Somehow, we've gotten used to it. I thank God, too, after all the sub-zero weather we have had this winter. Even though we've had the heat set so low, our gas bills have been outrageous!

We turn ours off, and it stays off for most of the day as well, unless it's cold outside to me. I'm rather hot-natured and over-heat easily, so it's just safer to leave it off.

I keep my house about 58 at night and about 62 during the day. Sometimes I might turn it up to 65 but that's rare. There is just me and the dogs in this house and we all like it a bit cool.

We keep our oil furnance on 65 when we are home, 60 at night when we go to bed. But we have a woodstove in our livingroom so, depending on how cold or warm it is, it can make the house 75 some days. We also have three windows that are huge, almost the size of a patio door so we open the curtains before we go to work, the sun helps a lot.

I moved from a small apartment where my gas bill was about $8 to a large mobile home last October and when the cold snap hit and we had 29 degrees in the morning, I was running my heater at 67. My gas bill was ridiculously ten times what it was at the apartment!!!!

Now I leave the thermostat at 60 at night and close my bedroom door.
Space heaters are great since my electric bill is only a fraction of my gas bill, so I warm up the room, turn off the space heater, and hop under the covers. That works for me.
Keep warm, girls.

I must be a wimp. We keep out thermostat at 70 day and night. And even then I'm usually wearing long sleeves and a hoodie.

Pretty much 68 around the clock... My mother came to stay with us recently, and her room tends to be cooooollllllddddd! Sometimes I bump it up hoping to heat that room more, but I think we're going to break down and buy a space heater for her. It's awful in there, and I feel horrible making her sleep in that chill. Especially since she came up here from Florida!!

70 at night, 72 in daytime. I keep bedroom closed to keep cats out, or else I can't sleep. I don't want them to freeze. If it get's very cold, like in the teens, I turn fireplace on and leave bedroom door open. I keep telling hubby to put a sweater on. The power company actually penalizes when people don't use power. Last fall it was in the 50's-60's and I turned heat off at 9 am and not back on til 6pm. Our bill went up! :(

brrr, 58 here at night and 62 during day (except when I get toooooo cold and turn it up for awhile) Like Diana we have fuel oil and don't have a choice in heating method, and fuel oil is so expensive.

Lately, it has been set at 60 during the night and around 62 - 64 during the day. Sweaters, sweatshirts, cozy socks and comfy throws keep the chill off during waking hours, and at night we use layers of cozy flannel sheets, down blankets, quilts and comforters - any combination, as needed; sometimes all four! :)
