Hi Farmgirls,
I just had to share pics of our new little girl . . . this is "Siete" (Spanish for "seven" . . because she is #7 in our little herd). She is just 3 days old and, I think, just adorable!!!!

We have a hobby herd of Longhorn cattle (there are some other threads here with pics of them) and "Siete" is our newest addition. She is half-Angus and half-Longhorn.

And, what is that on your little head, "Siete" . . a tiara perhaps?
Thanks for letting me share!
CJ

I'm sure she'll be more "friendly" as she grows and gets used to us. All the others have. She's really frisky, feisty and active.
I hope to get "progress" pics of her and Gunsmoke here soon. They are growing.

How absoutly adorable!!!

We win our antelope over gradually with trust and treats.......mostly produce being apples, carrots and romaine lettuce. Maybe closer to weaning you can win her over :)

Congrats!

Thanks Mary,
I'll try to remember to take my camera over the hill to take pics. I actually need to take one of "Gunsmoke" and post it so you all can see how he's grown!
Wishing you the best on your farm!

Thanks CJ. My husband are in the process of buying a house with land in Idaho.. ( retired from the rat race in busy bay area california) and he has been reading everything available on raising cattle. I was raised on a ranch on the coast in a small town named Half Moon Bay and want to go back to farm life. Have always done my best with what was available with large yards but miss having the life of farm life. I have raised a pig named pork chop.. he was yummy. and a sheep called "legg o Lamb".F and have raised my own meat poultry.. so I know how you feel. I love growing what I eat.. veggies, legumes, and meat included . I was wondering what Hobby heard meant.. we are planning on having a Hobby farm. we are thinking a small number less than 6 head. of course I want a horse too. I miss having my horses. My niece has 27 horses and is going to give me a couple. I can't wait for our farm to become a reality. We love Idaho and have known for years thats were we wanted to live when all the kids were raised and he was able to retire from his state job. I am in awe of alot of the women on here... Im fairly new of MJ Farmgirl connection. Post pics of your Siete as she grows... would love to keep track.

Well Mary, I asked my hubby your question. We don't really have a "technical" answer . . . it's just what we call our little bunch of bovines.
However, he says (and he's just throwing stuff out there) his definition of a "hobby herd" is 1). anything less than a dozen; 2). anything you don't pay taxes on; 3). anything that your cow dog doesn't have to work all day. We do have an Australian cattle dog, Bramble, and she has great instincts for working cattle. However, she is MY pal and not really our "cattle working dog". So, I know, that's a rather silly answer . .
They are a hobby, but we do eat them . . . even if they have names. In an older thread on this forum there is one about "Gunsmoke", a bull calf born in April. He's a steer and we'll be having "Gunsmoke" burgers when he's old enough to go in the freezer.

YAY!! I'm happy now . . got to pet this little girl today! She was flat out on her side sound asleep in the sun taking an afternoon nap. And she was by the fence along the lane which is my route for my daily power walk. Tied my dog to the fence on the other side so she wouldn't distract Siete and I sneaked up behind her and put my hand through the fence and just petted this baby until she woke up and moved away.
Her momma was there and came over, sniffing me and sorta sniffing Siete, hovering very close over her. If the fence had not been between us I couldn't have done this, even though momma didn't seem too concerned. I think Siete thought it was her momma nuzzling her.
She woke up, looked perplexed and finally got up but I was able to pet her for at least a minute or more.
Her fur is shorter than it looks, but thick, semi-soft and wavy. And, I was able to see the little white patches at the base of her ears on the back of her head . . interesting.
Anyway, thought I'd share . . I touched her!!!! Sweet!

Well, my attempts (twice) yesterday to touch her through the fence were unsuccessful. She's just too feisty! Gotta catch her napping in the sun! I'll keep trying! I wanna feel that fur of hers!

I certainly agree, she is just the cutest. I'd have her in the house as a pet. I love her coloring.
Thanks for sharing with us.

Hi CJ, thanks for answering my question. When I came back today, I saw your prior post with the parents pictures and the answer. Not sure why I missed it last night. lol Not having the huge horns does make it seem like it would be easier to handle them.

I hope that you can get closer someday soon.
Take care,
Sondra

Hi Sondra . . . here's answer to your "horn" question.
CJ

To answer some questions:

Nope, you can't get really very close to her . . . mom is MOM!!!
We plan to keep her . . .hopefully she'll bless us with more babies too!

Don't know if she'll have horns, because of the Angus in her. Dad has horns but not very "Longhorn-ish" . . . so, my guess is she probably won't unless there is a strong Longhorn gene influence that prevails.

We are glad Dad does NOT have Longhorn horns . . .Longhorn bulls with typical Longhorn horns are dangerous!!

I hope to get close enough sometime soon to pat her little head . .
Thanks girls!

Do you expect her to grow the horns like a longhorn gets?

How cute! I'd just love to be able to run my fingers through that fluffy coat. The mark on her face is interesting.

CeeJay, She is sooo sweet! And Tamara is right, she is so fluffy. Is that just her or are they all that fluffy as babies? I love longhorns, being from Texas originally, ya know. Thanks for sharing!
