Are there any hatcheries out there that sell middle aged or slightly older birds?

I don't need any more chicks, but rather young hens that will start to lay this summer.

I'm coming up bust on Craig's List for cities closer to me and am super unfamillar with auctions

Check with the 4H office to see if/when they have their auction of chickens. We got our last ones there. Cutest little boy had raised them. We bought the blue ribbon winners and probably paid a little more for them than we should have but he was just so dang proud of them I could not resist. They were Rhode Island Reds. They were laying within a month of purchase. As long as you can recognize a healthy chicken you can do well there.

PS. Hatcheries will NOT send older chicks-they send NEW chicks that have just hatched since they can survive 24-48 without food/water. They wouldn't survive mailing.

I'd search Craigslist for hens, and I'd try posting a wanted ad on Cheapcycle or freecycle to see if anyone has any. I know I've got 9 chickens that will be laying late winter/spring that I'd love to sell to someone! Nobody's buying right now. I'd check with my local famers market, too.
