Our big girl, Rose (and Violet's favorite dog and nanny), started limping terribly a few days ago, and by Friday, wouldn't put weight on her back right leg. Today she went for x-rays, and it was what I expected...a torn ACL. I recall Alee's dog having the same issue. It just happens I guess, with all the squirrel chasing and being the boss of the world that Rose takes on. Surgery scheduled for Thursday at about $1,000 and some change. She's only 7, and I can't imagine our world without her.

Think good thoughts for the girl as she goes through this!!

Sorry to hear about Rose. I would do some research and maybe take her to a different vet with the xrays the other vet took. Thats a big change in diagonis. Good luck to you both.

Jonni I hope and pray that Rose is going to be ok, every little girl and boy need a nanny. Our daughter had our Doberman as a nanny and they were so cute together. I say that having to make that hard decision about our furkids is the curse of loving them so much but I will continue to have them as the house is just not the same without them.

Oh Jonni!
I have not heard of CDM. Hopefully you can find a good vet to guide you.
Have you ever used the interns in Milford? They are wonderful. They are pricey, not horribly, but many times, if I had gone to them 1st, I could have saved mucho bucks.
My male dane, had a heart murmur at 2 that all other vets were giving me horrible reports on; the interns determined it was a functional murmur; he lived to 10 (all 220 lbs of him)
Then Willow got very sick, we did not know why, she was down & would not move. Maysville kept her 3 days, ran millions of tests, said she had a growth in her abdomen. I took to Milford; 30 minutes later, diagnosis: kidney infection, a $10 bottle of sulfa & done. The kidney in dogs floats & the other vets had me in a panic.
Anyway, they are my go to vets for anything odd.

Praying for your sweet snooted beauty...
Love..

Yeah, it really is, Paula. I did do a little prelim searching on my own, and my good friend's daschund had CDM (he was 16) and it was just terrible to watch him those last months. His vet is a good friend of ours, and I've already contacted her for a bit of guidance--I'm just not sure I like the turn this took. I guess my thought, too, is, if you felt that there was something on the xray to do surgery, why isn't it there now?

Jonni,

Wow, what a blow!!! Did your vet do some DNA testing to determine CDM? It seems like quite a jump of assumptions to go from torn ACL to that. Be careful, do some research on CDM and maybe get a second opinion before you go too far with anything radical.

Hugs to all of you.

Well, waiting to talk with the doc. Seems that when they opened her up, there was no torn ACL, so he's thinking it's now disc related, and arthritis has settled into bulged discs, causing this on/off effect. We're trying steroids for the next two weeks and if that doesn't do anything, then he believes it's Canine Degenerative Myelopothy--which is incurable, and she will become paralyzed and we'll need to euthanize her in a matter of a year or so. So, the "who know's" to me are a little bit worse than the former diagnosis...continue thinking good thoughts for Rose and hope that it's a bulged disc that we can take steroids for whenever the pesky thing acts up, instead of the latter option...

Hi girls...dropped Rose off today at the vet--she got a bath last night, and has new "clothes" as Violet calls her new collar :) Thanks for your good thoughts throughout the day--they said they will call us around 3:00, when she's waking up from her sedation.

Thanks for the good thoughts--keep em through Monday, her surgery has been rescheduled. The doc had an emergency out of town. So, we'll have the weekend to get ready and make the house a bit more easily travelled for her.

Tell Rose good luck tomorrow! My cairn had both his knees done last year. Blew his right ACL 3 days after the surgery on the left! That was a rough summer/fall on us but he's doing well now. He still has some issues with his left knee but I think it was because it never had a chance to heal properly since it had to take the load after his right one went bad. Give Rose lots of pettings tonight!

Ha, that's about right, German Shedders. She (and our other 3 dogs) just blew their coats a few weeks ago and I'm STILL cleaning!

I'll get some of the Gynoflex. She does take a vitamin supplement, as do the other dogs and they also take fish oil capsules. Thanks for the tip!

We have two German Shedders...er I mean Shepherds as well, and they are such treasures. I'll tell them about Rose and have them send some good doggy energy her way.
Knowing risks with joint issues for GSD's, I've been giving mine Glyco-Flex for years. It keeps them limber and comfortable, and something like that might even help Rose with potential for future strains!!

The vet called yesterday and said that her bloodwork showed elevated liver enzymes, but they think that's due to the Rimadyl she's been taking since Friday for pain. It's not super over the limit, but it's higher than what they would normally like to see. They do want to go ahead with the surgery, though, because everything else appears normal and in line with a healthy dog.

So, no food/water after midnight tonight, which shouldn't be an issue, they pick her up at 8:45 tomorrow am, and then she stays the night at the hospital and back home on Friday.

Thanks for all the good wishes--and Annika, I'm glad to know your dogs did well after the surgery. Very good to know!

Thank you, Marcy, I certainly will. She's been a very good girl to our family, so I'm hoping that this surgery will make her feel better!

Thanks to all of you for your good thoughts for Rose. She was in good spirits last night, happy to be home--I think they gave her a double dose of pain meds because she was pretty care free.

Oh, Grace! That's hilarious! He was too big to take back to school!!!??? I'm sure your mother was thrilled....I never had a real opinion on them either way, but my father, bless him, had a total phobia. Apparently, growing up on a farm in rural Louisiana picking blackberries each summer sort of "fixed" him on snakes. He would literally pass out, even if one was on tv. As a little one, I thought it was sort of funny, now I realize he was truly terrified!

Violet has a blue and white striped ribbon belt that she refers to as a "snake" and throws it in the floor and yells, "Mahmee, Mahmee--lut! It a snakie!!" and then when I arrive, she jumps behind my legs...Silly kiddo

@Diane--that's my concern, is that she'll also tear the other side. They said there is a 50/50 chance. I wonder why that is?

@Janice, I'll keep you and David posted. Apparently there is little to know therapy after the surgery, just trying to keep a 92 lb. dog still for 2 weeks or so until her stitches come out. That's the good news, though, is that she's continuing to lose weight and I'm happy about that. That can only make recovery easier on her. Such a large framed dog, it really would be so much worse if she were the 115 she was a few years back.

Jonni, I will be praying and thinking of her. I hope the surgery is quick and she has a speedy recovery and is back to chasing all those bad squirrels soon.

Jonni- no at the time the x rays didn't support it, but if Sky runs around at the barn- even if we didn't go for a ride, she is lame for a month or more. She just barely is recovering from last time. It breaks my heart.

Jonni, prayers out to you and Rose. My DD's English Bulldog, Tank, is having the same surgery tommorrow. She had the other leg done six months ago and now tore the other one. She came through it well. I hope Rose does too!
