I really want a small dog. The smallest dog I've ever owned was 80 lbs. Every person I have known with a small breed had pee problems. My mom-friend, Dianne, has a Boston Terrier that has taken a year to potty train.
Basically what I am wondering is:
Have you successfully potty trained w/out pee pads? What breed and gender was your dog? Any insight would be helpful. Thank you.

My darling mother in law raised tea cup chawawas, She lived in a garden level unit at the time, One of the puppies that she was trying to train was very resistent to all her efforts. She got so frustrated with the dog she would scoop her up and drop her out the window to the ground below.. this occured quite a few times until the dog finally decieded she got it. Puppy would still puddle; then jump on the chair, onto the table and jump out the window on her own. Yes she was finally trained but she was slower to learn than the others. |

I have 2 chihuahuas and they are so loving, great with kids, and very smart. They go potty outside and are very portable! So easy to take on road trips and camping!

Here's Tina. She is a year and a half old. We got her from friends that have too much going on. I love her so much. She is doing VERY well on her potty training.

I spent time with a Terrier/Chihuahua. It takes a special person to love a small dog. It reminded me of having a baby. I think that I can only love Mastiff breeds, like bulldogs, pitt bulls, maybe I'd try a pug. I really have taken for granted how wonderful my American Bulldog Mix is. I am made for these dogs. Maybe it's because I love being the boss.

I had a West Highland White Terrier (Westie) for 16 years. She was a terffic dog, but not good with kids. She was house broken in the spring and after that wasn't a problem. I did keep her in a cage while I was at work. If the kids didn't get her outside when they got home from school she would sometimes have an accident. But that only happened if she had been in there for too long.

well here i am with an opinion again. i just love my yorkie. he is so smart. so i am biased. i think it is more about containment than even frequency. unless pushed dogs normally will not foul their bed. so on my lap or in a crate but not free running of house. the house is bigger than the dog can comprehend. the dog whisperer has a book and videos on training. hope this helps. let us know if you get one. happy days sherrye

I think that this is my own fault as much as the dog in question. I am used to large dogs, and then got a Pom. I tried to train him like I've trained other dogs, but no soap. Mr' Pook is 6 now and has refused my every attempt to train him. He is only allowed out of his crate with a belly band/diaper on. I have been told by my vet that some small dogs just pee. We'll take him out for a good long walk and he'll come right in and piddle on the floor. I love Pook, but I'll never have another small dog. Don't mean to be a downer, just wanted to tell my side of it.
That being said, I do hope that you give a little dog a chance. They are active, affectionate and lovely little friends =)

we have a Daschund/Jack Russell mix and I adore her. affectionate and so smart. loves to cuddle with you. |

Thank you ladies for all of your input. It seems to me that it's all about frequency. I met a lady that had a teacup poodle that never had accidents after two months of training. She said she just took him out about every two hours. She never kept him out of any part of her 2000 sq. ft. home.
I do have an American Bulldog, that only poops in the woods and bushes, surrounding the dandelions, I mean, my husbands lawn. I know he'll be a good teacher. He's neutered, and only displayed agression against another dog one time, after being humped in the ear for three days, which is the other dog trying to dominate him.
I have decided against chihuahua and pomeranians, because I would be a mess if an injury occured. Hopefully I can find a rat terrier or mini pin mix at the pound for less than $300.
Here in W. Washington, rescues charge more for cute and potty trained dogs. I tried to save a cairn terrier yesterday, but I just can't spend $300, at the pound. Especially since the dog will need to be groomed, taken to MY vet, new bed, etc.

I have a min pin who's 4 years old. She's potty trained. I utilize the crate when I'm gone for long amounts of time. Although, if she has to go, and you don't let her out, (after her showing you she needs to go-scratching at the door, barking, etc.) she WILL go in the house. It's not her, as she lets you know! If she has an accident, it's usually due to someone not letting her out!
Starbucks and sushi to green fried tomatoes and corn pudding-I wouldn't change it for the world.

Hi Trish, I have 3 small dogs and a Lab. I must say that having an already housebroken dog really helps the new ones learn quickly. I have a friend who swears by the crate training. She leaves the pup in the crate unless he's being fed or played with. The pup is always taken out to do his business before doing anything else. I have been lucky with mine there has always been an older buddy here to teach. I have a chihuahua/terrier mix Cocoa she's 11 years old, a chihuahua/doxie mix Brindy she's about 3 years old (she was a rescue) and a mini doxie Ollie he's 11 months old & of course my lab Venus she's 5 years old & the love of my life!

Trish, I got my 2 Rat Terrier sisters 13 1/2 years ago at 6 weeks old. I kept them in a little small crate at night. I would get up a few times during the night to let them out. They never had an accident inside. Until they got way older. I couldn't let them stay inside inside. Even in a crate they would pee. Now at 13 1/2, Zoe died in Jan. Sophie is still running around acting like a puppy. But I cannot let her in becuase she has a pee problem now. I have a room beside the garage that I have a heat lamp and some cushions for her and Bubba and the cats for when it's really cold. They are fine there. But I never had a problem when they were younger. Only now.

My cairn pretty much potty trained himself. Kind of the way Sherry described. When he was left on is own it was either a crate or a small room (bathroom). As he got older he got to go into bigger rooms. They do not like to soil where they live. Now that he's an elderly gentlemen he has occasional accidents and though he never gets in trouble with us he feels deep shame.

I have a shizu and no problems at all. But at the time he was a puppy I also had a German Shepherd that was horrified the first time the puppy did his business on the floor and that was the last time the puppy went in the house. So not sure if the puppy was smart or the German Shepherd was smarter.

My daughter has a Min Pin, that is the smartest dog I have ever seen. She weighs just 5 pounds at two years old, was potty trained in a week and has not had an accident since. Daughters boyfriend also has a Min Pin that is 10 pounds, she is also very smart and no potty problems with her either. I am a big dog person (2 labs) but if we ever decide to get a small dog it will defiantly be a Min Pin.

No free roaming, meaning that after an activity or change in events, you don't let them go around the house until business is done? Or you don't let them have free reign over your house?

howdy there trish, i have a yorkie. i have had a few of them. i started with a play pen. first trained to it. their brain and awareness to things around them at first is small. as itty grew we made his world bigger. the instinct i think is to walk away from main living space and pee. to them when small thats the other side of room. i did the dog whisperer way. when they wake up out now to potty. if i fed out to potty if i groomed out to potty. NO FREE ROAMING. easier to prevent than to go back. my dog has a doggie door to an area that he is safe to go potty. it is fenced covered and hidden from hawks and bigger animals for night safety. if it is snowing or - degrees he will pee out there on his ramp. we also take our dogs on chores. so now all 3 do their business across in pasture. i never used pee pads. it was a lot of consistent work but well worth a pee free house. i know others will have ideas too. hope this helps you some. happy days sherrye
