I thought we might need to have a dairy thread going here since there are so many of us that have goats and cows. And we are always needing advice and help on one thing or another. So why not start a dairy area.

Anyone interested? We can talk all we want about our favorite girls. I'll start.

I have 3 Lamanchas and 1 Nubian. They range in age from 3-7. They are all due to kid around the end of march. I am hoping for more girls this year. We had 13 kids last year and only 2 were does. So I keep rubbing their bellies and talking to the "girls".

I have been milking goats going on 5 years now. I love it. I milk by hand. I have 3 stanchions so that makes it easy. Last year I had 7 I was milking. 4 is still a lot and I may end up selling 1 more. One of the does is half Toggenburg and her milk last year was not that good.

So ya'll join in and lets talk dairy here.

Kris

Thanks Betty for the cute names. I am still thinking on them.I try to use names that are at least 2 to 3 syllables so they are easier to say when I call them but could use the longer names for their registration papers.
Once they get a little bit older and I see personalities starting to emerge it will help with naming them. When are you first babies due? The rest of mine are starting in the middle of April.

Yep Kris its been awhile since I put pictures on. I love the way these kids are marked. I thought about naming the only boy in the group Orion. Not sure yet on names but if anyone has a suggestion for good names for these 3 girls and 1 boy I am looking for some unique names. The mothers name is Baby Spottie (not very original) and the other mothers name is Sprinkles. You can see why I need help with names........lol.

I love the spots Marilyn. The rest of my does do not have them but they are still pretty. I have 3 more due next month and will post pictures when they kid.

I have 2 sets of twins born in the last 12 hours. Three of them have spots. Deliveries went great with no problems. One doe has some edema in her udder. She actually went a day early.

Thought I would bump up this old post. It was one of my favorite topics on barnyard buddies.I have been missing in action for quite awhile. Life sometimes gets in the way.Thought I would check back in.

My girls start kidding next month.
I had the vet out to the farm Wed. to draw blood and have them checked for CAE and John's again. I have been doing this for 23 years now.So far I have not had a case yet... knocking on wood.......lol. Its been almost 3 years since they have been tested so I figured it was about time again. I can't wait until I have goat milk again. I really miss it.

She still may regain her eyesight. It may take a week or 2 but there is still a chance. If the eye is still white in a few weeks then she may end up being blind. Maybe she will end up with sight on one eye......I hope for her sake she does. I think she has a good chance for at least one of them. Let me know how she keeps doing. Good luck.

Used the treatment in her eyes for 3 days and will start again today. Her eyes have cleared up infection wise but she will be blind in her right eye. It is white and looks like a zombie. Her left eye is still a little questionable. I can see her iris and pupil and she acts like she is trying to see, but she still can't see. Her poo is normal again and she loves getting a massage! All three goats 'helped' build the goat shelter with DH yesterday. It still needs walls, but at least they can get in out of the rain as long as it isn't blowing much. Thanks for all the help!

Got the Today treatment. Going to do it today after work. Was too late when I got home last night - no lights in the barn.

Lora I would like you to try something on her eyes. It has worked for many goats including mine and you may get her eyesight back. You buy a product called "Today" its a mastitis infusion treatment. It has an oil base. Put that in her eyes 3 days in a row once a day. Wait a couple of days and then do it for 2 more days. This stuff is a miracle worker. It is used off label but put this in her eyes. You will see a major improvement. Make sure you don't get the one thats called " Tomorrow" it won't work and you can't put that one in the eyes only the other one. This will take away part of the cloudyness and if its not too late it could heal her totally up.My friend went through this and finally tried this after pestering her for several days cause she didn't think it would work. It totally healed her goats eyes and they were both cloudy and she is doing great now.Hope they helps.

Moonpie is doing much better. I think she is going to be permanently blind though. Her eyes are clearing up infection wise, but the cloudiness is not. I am going to get a bell to put on Lizzie so she can find her in the pasture. Poor thing got panicked the other day because she kept running into a pile of sticks and couldn't figure out how to get around it. She knows how to get on the milk stand if I put one foot up for her. She's just as gentle as can be. My DS has milked her everyday since we got her. He even got up early today and went out before school. Talk about shocked! We aren't using the milk right now since we wormed her but I don't want her to dry up. I am giving her a little extra grain and all the hay she can eat in her pen. They all go out during the day if there is no threat of rain or I am home to put them in since I don't have a shelter in the pasture for them yet. She stays in a large dog kennel in the barn and the other two are in a large box stall built for horses.

Maka, the baby is fit as a fiddle. He still follows us everywhere and runs and jumps like crazy. Too cute! I was paying some attention to Moonpie and he came over and plopped down beside me and took nap.

I have not been on in a little while. Darn internet has been down and then back on for an hour and then down 3 more days. Lora glad your little one is doing better. I hope your new goat gets better. Sounds like you got her just in the nick of time. Its wonderful that you are giving her a new home and lease on life. I bet she ends up being a really good goat for you.

OMG Betty you have babies coming out your ears. Thats alot of trips. I had 3 sets this year and 2 sets of twins. That was enough for me.

I am done kidding for the season...........YAY!!! My last doe kidded 3 days ago with two does. Here is a picture of Pumpkin and her 2 girls.

Lora, just be careful in handling her without gloves. Goats can get pinkeye.

Was given a milk goat this week. She came from a bad situation. Always outside, no shelter. She is a sweetheart but has a terrible eye infection in both eyes. I have washed her face with warm clean water, rinsed her eyes with saline and put opthomalic (spelling) in both. Wormed, vaccinated and given microbe gel. Vet isn't available until mid week. Have her separated from the other 2. I think she is a Lamancha cross. Mahogany and white...named her Moonpie.

Cocci is treated with Corid. I start treatment with Corid at 20 days old followed every 20 days until well grown and on meat goat pellets.

If that is the Cd/T vaccine, yes. DH gave him the oil, about 3cc's and I walked him for a quite awhile when I got home. He pooped a little bit, then I walked him more. Before bed I gave him a small dose of baking soda. I laid on the couch with him and rubbed his belly for almost an hour. We went outside again and he pooped and peed one more time. He was alert and crying out loudly this morning when he heard the alarm clock go off - he was ready to go outside. His belly is much smaller today and I gave him one more dose of baking soda and also left a small dish of it in his crate with a small bowl of water and a handful of hay.

2 more days until Ugly Betty is gone.

Do you treat for cocci? There is a facebook page called The Goat Care Unit that has some very knowledgeable goat keepers on you might also ask the question on.
