It is always a sure sign of that start of summer when calves are turned out onto green grass with their moms. This is an Angus operation in Illinois.

A variety of reasons...but mainly, I really missed bacon. I went to an artsy fartsy boarding school where we shunned anything and everything mainstream and because I struggled with ethical issues about the way our meats were killed and processed at that time, I became a vegetarian--I chose then, too, to use products made without animal byproducts and no animal testing. I still maintain this for our household. After about 8 years, there were glimpses that we might be heading in a responsible direction with our food (especially living in NYC...the farmers market was to die for, and there were stirrings of responsible grazing and slaughtering from the farmers who brought their wares) and I began to eat meat again, starting slowly with fish and chicken first, then on to beef and my true love, pork :) I still maintain a mostly vegetarian diet, with supplements of protein at least once a week. I married a complete carnivore, so it's difficult, but he's getting better and realizes that grains don't bite.
Ironically, I don't eat a lot of fish now because of where it's caught...so I seem to always be up for a cause :)

No need to be a vegetarian!  Just remember that the beef you are eating is raised in a good environment.

Aww...I just love calves. I miss having one around here. Mona calved so late in 2008 (Halloween) and I will try to get her back to spring calving..so we won't have a 2009 calf this year. sigh.
