I couldn't even write until now, but we had to have my dog Zena put to sleep about two weeks ago.
She was a stray that we adopted from the pound when she was 9 years old. Apparently, there wasn't alot of interest in a 9 year old, 100 pound pit bull/lab mix! But she turned out to be the sweetest, most gentle dog I've ever owned. I have to figure out how to post them, but somewhere I have pictures of her laying on her dog bed, with our neighbors twin 7 year olds laying on either side of her!
We had been treating her for arthritis for a while, but she went downhill suddenly-could'nt get up, walk, or balance, without us holding her up, and our wonderful vet had used up every idea they could think of. No control at all of her hindquarters-they think it was a combination of the arthritis and nerve issues.
Very, very sad, but I keep telling myself that not all dogs that size live to be 14 years old, and she went very quietly and peacefully with no pain (our vet thinks there was some nerve issues as well).
Anyway, if you could just remember her in your prayers, it would be appreciated. She really was a great dog.

I had my wonderful Catahoula, Hooligan for 8 wonderful years before cancer got him. I still cry over that dog. I'm so sorry that you've lost your friend and companion. I know that you've got good memories of your
Zena. It's so hard to say good-bye. *hugs*

Oh, Jennifer, I so know how your feeling. You just described my Lily to a tee. We experienced the same heartbreak and the same ultimate conclusion--that she would be made whole again, romping in the heavens--she was also 14. It's been 6 years and I cried as I read your story, and am crying as I type this, even now.

I am thinking of you and your lovely girl, and remember, she will always be with you, she has simply changed form.

Jennifer, it's a total bummer we have to lose our dear pet friends. It just seems like they never live long enough but it is always my hope that dogs (and horses and a few sheep, etc.) do go to heaven. I've got a pack up there waiting for me.

So glad you and Zena found each other and enjoyed your life together...animal friends are the best! Hugs.

Jennifer, I'm so sorry. It hurts so bad to see a member of your family not there anymore. Believe me I know. We lost our Sophie the week of Thanksgiving. We got her as a pup and saved her from the pound, and she was the best girl ever. A lab/chow mix and solid black. She was 10 years old and had cancer. I think I cried for two weeks straight! So I will keep you in my thoughts and just remember all the good times with Zena. Tammy

Thanks so much for the kind responses. It helps so much to talk to and hear from other people who understand how hard it is to lose a furry friend-it really is like part of the family is missing.
Thanks again.

Yes it is hard to lose a friend. You gave her a good life and she is that star up in the heavens shining down and thanking you. Smile and be happy for her. MB

So very, very hard to lose a true friend. My heart goes out to you at this trying time. Never gets any easier does it,...that they don't live as long as we do. You have all my sympathy and then some. Try to do something nice for yourself in her memory. Bless your heart a million times for adopting an older dog and being willing to risk your heart on her. I am truly sorry you lost your girl. She sounded real special and so do you.

Oh Jennifer I am so sorry for your loss! I still miss my buddy that we had to put to sleep 2 years ago, but I definitly take solace in the fact that she had a fantastic life and passed in peace with her family around her.

I bet Zena- having been in the pound, appreciated your loving house all the more. *hugs*

I am so sorry for your loss Jennifer. The end of December we had to put down our Pup of 15 years for the same thing. It sounds like Zena (and our pup Zokie) lived good long lives :) I will be praying for you and your family for comfort.
