My dh and I lost our 23 year old cat, Big Al, this morning. I feel like somebody hit me hard with a very large piece of petrified barn siding. I'm reeling, and I don't know which way to fall. This is one of the hardest things ever for me. My life can be measured in those 23 years - almost the time we've lived in our house - the time my dh and I have been married - my son's life - we got Al when Doug was 5; he's now 28 and getting married in October. I don't know what to do with myself. I went to an auction this afternoon just to get out of the house. I almost passed out from the heat, but it was better than having to think or go home. I'm trying to think of someplace else to go right now, anywhere but home.

I'm so so sorry for your loss. My dog Hooligan passed away last month and I'm still grieving. I hope that the loss and pain softens with time for you. That is a long time to have a good friend and lose them

Hattah, that makes me cry--in a very good way, about your gran. When my old dog passed, I thought I would, too--my mother found a piece of jewelry for me made by a gal in San Francisco with a quote that said, "Though I am gone, I have merely changed form and now I run through the heavens" That made it better--not all the way, but I still think of her running up there, whole of body and no more pain.

hi miss bee haven
I am so sorry about your kitty. I have always had cats and I miss having one now. 23 is the ancient of days for kitties. I think that our pets are the Guardians of Being as E.Tolle said. We are never more ourselves than when we are with them. They ask nothing but they give sooooooooo much. It hurts when they leave us.

MY nana always had dogs (and cats) and now she is 95 with early Alzheimers and do you know what she does???? She feeds all her old doggies. I can account for at least six. She calls them her kids. I hope if I am ever that old those are the things that come to visit me.

I truely believe that nothing and no one is ever really gone from us.

peace

Janice...I am so sorry to hear about your loss!! It does take awhile to get over for sure..if we ever do. I had a 22 year old cat named Sylvia, who died about 7 years ago now. I still think about her all the time. Our oldest cat now is 12. It is hard having two elderly dogs and one older cat..it makes me nervous!! I wish I were there to give you a hug! hang in there...

Janice,
How sad, but what a long life for a kitty. Isn't it hard? I won't get another pet after I lost my last kitty. She was only 12. I still miss her and its been five years. They are so funny aren't they? Hope you are feeling a tiny bit better today, its takes a while to get past that sinking feeling, they are such a big part of our lives.

Ahh, Janice..I don't think I've ever heard of a cat that lived til 23...and I've seen alot of cats! By this I mean...under your love and care did that boy live so long...and I know it is small consolation but just think of how lucky he was to have had such a life with you!

Sending you big hugs!

They sure do capture our hearts, especially the old troopers. Sorry you lost your kitty, it is losing a family member, they are such special beings. He certainly had a long healthy life and was cherished, can't ask for more than that...

Janice my heart goes out to you....it is SO hard when they have been with you and part of your life and history for so long. Just know this...he was loved and well taken care of and happy or he would not have lived that long....you were good to him and he loved you as well or he wouldn't have stuck around as long as he did...that was one loved feline! Here's to Big Al and the family that loved and cared for him for so many years. Hip Hip Hooray! Bless your family for giving him such a wonderful life. Hugs and loads of sympathy at this time.

oh Janice sweety...I'm sending you a great big hug.
so very sorry.
wow..23 yrs..most kitties only live 15 ...so big Al gave you 8 yrs more than the average kitty..what a blessing to you I know.
I know that you have lots and lots of fond memories.
As Jonni mentioned..it is perfectly o.k. to cry..wish I was there to lend you a shoulder and to give you a great big hug in person.
it is always hard to lose anything that we love..be it pets, people..anything..loss is hard..so do cry..and talk as much as you need to..we gals are here to listen.
I'm glad that you did not pass out..it has been so very hot outside lately..so do try to keep cool, and with crying and the heat..do try to get something to drink..we want our sweet Janice to stay healthy too.
(did you find anything at the auction? getting out of the house sometimes does help, but having a big cry out and letting yourself release those emotions is so helpful too..I know it hurts like the dickens, but you will be o.k...trust me..it takes time..any loss does..but the sun will shine again..but for now..allow yourself a bit of crying and grieving...all will be well again soon it just takes a little time is all, and do know that we care and love you gal..great big cyber hugs headed your way)

Oh Janice, I'm so sorry about Al. I know we've talked a lot about our pets, and our kitties--how each one is near and dear to us. What a long and wonderful life, but with those milestones that you mentioned, I'm glad he was there each and every step. Our pets leave a void like none other...I'm glad you got out of the house (and glad you didn't pass out) but give yourself the time you need. You and I both know it's alright to cry like a baby over our...well, babies.
