Hi ladies. I don't usually do this, but I am taking my turn to rant here. A week ago I was walking my two dogs when all of a sudden this large yellow dog came running, snarling, growling and barking at us. He charged my Newfie, who stood her ground and then passed her up and attacked my Bernese Mtn. dog, Sadie. His owner did not rush in to get the dog, but took his good ole time. Meanwhile, the dog tried to grab Sadie by the throat. She pulled away, and the dog lept on her haunches biting her there. My husband pulled the dog off and the owner grabbed it. Meanwhile, my Sadie who is always submissive was terrified. (I was a screaming meemie, too.) One of the neighbors called the police and we filed a report (apparently nothing has been done about this non-neutered viscious male dog as of yet).

So, one week later, I find a large lump on Sadie's haunches and another on her chest. The one on her chest is a tumor, but the one on her haunches was a big hematoma that had to be drained so that it did not abcess. There were big teeth marks around the hematoma! Meanwhile, I am heartbroken that she has had to have this done.

At the time of the incident, we talked to the guy about having his dog neutered. He played dumb and said he did not know what we meant. Apparently his wife has said that he does not want to neuter his males because it might change their personality. I say.....ok, let's change that, because right now it's not so good! What is it about some men that own male dogs and think that if their dogs are neutered it will make them less manly? Do some guys identify with their dog's testicles????? From what I have seen, un-neutered males tend to roam more and are more aggressive. I guess I feel that if you are not going to breed your dog, then have them neutered. Especially if they are this aggressive!

Well, I have decided to take this to the limit. I am sending the bill for the surgery, the pictures and a statement from the vet that this was caused by a dog bite...to the police in hopes that they give the guy a citation for failing to keep his dogs under control. I usually just let things go, but not this time. My poor Sadie has to suffer unnecessarily because of this guy's ignorance....oh and by the way, he has another un-neutered male dog. Apparently, he cannot leave the dogs in the same room together, or they will tear each other apart. What a BOZO!!

Keep Smiling.....Bev

You gotta love a happy ending. But I too agree, this guy is taking the easy way out.

You should have been compensated if he had been any kind of neighbor.

Pity he will become someone else's problem!

give Sadie a hug for us here in NC!

Final update....and this will amaze you....apparently according to his neighbor....on the week that he was to have the dog neutered (and the police were going to follow up).....a moving van arrived and he was out of his place within one day...no one even knew he was moving. So, who knows what he ever did with his dog.....good riddence for me....but now I suppose it may be somebody else's problem. I am just glad he no longer lives in the area.....and so is Sadie!!!! By the way...she healed fine...her hair is finally growing back in and no more lumps found....so we will keep our fingers crossed. Thanks for all who were concerned!

Please do not let this jerk off the hook. He definetly should pay for Sadie's vet bill at the very least. I realize he is a neighbor, but having to fork over money just might make him think the next time he lets his dogs loose. I keep thinking what if this were a woman out for a walk with her small child?? Letting him walk away with no punishment would, in my opinion, be so wrong.

Thank you for the update on Sadie, she is so beautiful.

I would be so furious!! If you are in an area where you can walk your dogs it would seem to me there would be a leash law. If this person is allowing his animals to roam he would be in violation of that law. I am with you and would persue this all the way, the man is a cretin and obviously does not have any brain activity. When you sue make sure he also has to pay your attorney bills. Poor puppy to have to go through this. I wish you well.

Once again, stipidity and bad upbringing come into play. Of course I would be mortified if ANY pet of mine EVER did anyting like this.

And first of all, ALL my pets are fixed and well socialized with other people and animals.

I wouldn;t even hesitate to pay for damages. what a fool

Oh brother

If the guy doesn't offer to pay, and you have time and strength to deal with it, i'd take it to court.

Happy to know Sadie is on the mend. Please give her a warm hug from NC

I still think he should be billed for her medical care. Just neutering the dog won't fix a behavioral problem- especially if the dog has started to enjoy being aggressive.

Shouldn't you send him the bill anyway? Or have the vet mail a copy of the bill for their services to his address. I'd have them include some of the photos of your injured girl too; he should have to see for himself what his animal has done to yours.

Glad to hear she is on the mend, though!

Yes, get it in writing. And if he was any kind of a decent person, he would pay the bill because he should, darn it! :( I'm glad your poor girl is doing better.

Update on Sadie.....she is doing much better. Her wound has FINALLY stopped draining and is starting to heal over. As for the Dumb S____ who's dog bit her....well according to the police the dog is scheduled for neutering this Thursday. I have asked the police to furnish me with written proof that the procedure was done so that I can put this to rest....otherwise, the guy gets the bill for Sadie's surgery and my rath!
And the rath will be much bigger than the bill!

Oh boy.

Your poor dog. I'm sorry.

It angers me when people do not "fix" their dogs.

A neighbor brought his new (male ) pup to play with our dog last night. This guy sounds likie he is all for vaccinating and doing the flea prevention stuff, but when I asked if the dog was going to be fixed, he said propaby not in case they wanted to breed him later on down the line. Never mind, this dog will propably roam, and start marking our stuff.

I can't stand ignorance like this.

My next door neighbors.. ( Not the ones with 50 kids.. but the ones on the other side of me..)
Had gotten a puppy last year..
He's SO out of control.. & they do nothing with him either .. he gets loose on a daily basis..
I don't even know the goofy dogs name.. I used to call him "Buddy".. I've since renamed him "Hell Boy" He's huge now.... seems to be either Husky or Malmute.. I really am not sure of the brred.. but it's along that line.. he has one blue eye.. He's kind of a yellowish/white dog.. with black & silver tips.. he is a really pretty dog.. But what an awful mess he is.. i wake up to him either UNDER my house barking.. Or TRYING to get under my house! Barking at the Chickens!! That aren't mine either.. (remember my stray chickens..?) And the cats/kittens.. that ALSO.. are not mine!! ( Remember how I have aquired THESE as THEY TOO are not mine!!..
So.. I am dealing with this lunatic Dog.. Who is reaising Cain in my yard ALL the time.. With Me.. & The Other Animals that reside in My yard in safe santuary.. as They all came from irresponsible owners TOO!!
While MY Dogs look on In amazement!!

I am Forever Dragging this big lughead back to his own yard.. & trying to hook him back up again!
& while I'm doing this.. I KNOW they are in the House.. & Just WON"T come out!!
( Of Course I'm not so sure I'D come outside with this crazy woman Dragging my dog through my yard Cussing either.. But.. Make an attempt.. ya know?)

ok.. Just though I'd share the common feeling of Stupid Irresponsible Pet owners with ya Bev..

Maybe THEY should be Strung up right next to their pets.. & they ALL get Fixed at the same time!! Would really make for a quieter World i think..

Poor Sadie..

I agree Bev.. they need to be accountable for their animals..
Or just not have them..
You should continue moving forward to showing him he's a sorry excuse of a pet owner.. & if the only way He see's going to take notice is through his wallet.. then.. so be it!!
Lesson Learned.. hopefully! He'll either get rid of the dogs.. or have them fixed.. & DEFINATLY learn to keep control of his own animals!

It's just such a sad shame that Sadie had to pay for his stupid ignorance..

I would have had a meltdown, I swear I would have went and shot that dog. What, heaven forbid if it had been a child!

You definitely have a civil suit on your hands............ A dog across from us growled at me one day, we shoo him home so he doesn't entice our dogs across the road. Our dogs seem to sense that we have a no animal trespass thing going on. Of course these same people let their small children play in the middle of the road (the youngest is two).

Bernese are the kindest dogs on the planet. Dog laws are getting very prohibitive in most areas due to irresponsible ownership! Good luck with your sweet dog.......

I agree with everything said so far. This is so senseless and sad. You probably should contact an attorney, or at least try to look up the laws in your town/county regarding dog bite laws, or leash laws, if possible. I live in New York City (I know, I know, city slicker, I am), but the leash laws also apply to several counties outside of Kings County (NYC) and into New York State.

This is too bad that such an imbecile would jeopardize your dogs as well as his own. You never know, it might be that something one of his dogs attacks may attack BACK at some point.

I wish you the best, and your sweet dog, too.

By the way- I just wanted to clarify- I am all for giving people the benefit of the doubt and to let things go- when they make an effort- but seriously! You shouldn't have to pay when it is their fault. They were at the very least in violation of leash laws and that dog should be impounded for a rabies/viciouness trial.

Oh my gosh! Poor Sadie! Depending on how much her surgeries and medicines are- I would take the guy to small claims court. You shouldn't have to pay because he lets his dogs roam!

Trap dogs and take them to animal control! We do it in Alaska, they get fined for unlicensed dog. There is a one bite rule and then dogs are put down.

I work in the ER, you cannot imagine the damage some dogs do to children, livestock and pets.

Please enforce stray dogs and trap them. jo

Oh Bev, she is a sweetie. Here is the crux of the problem, dog owners that are not reponsible for their animals shouldn't have them. My opinion, that includes neutering them. We have a neighbor 3 doors down, whose dog as bitten twice and he still got him back and doesn't take care of him or the other two he has. They are suppose to be housebound, but are they oh noo. My husband and I carry a baseball bat if they are out. I know it isn't the dogs fault, but I refuse to get bit. We keep calling the animal shelter, how many complaints do they need before they take care of this. It has been going on for a year. A dog kennel and a distant county shelter, hmmmm. I love animals but can we tie up the owners and treat them like they treat their animals!!!!!!
Most owners are responsible and care and then we have the few that make a spoiled mess for the rest of us. Isn't that just the way.
Okay, done urping up.

Enjoying life.

Poor baby! How awful for her. I hope she heals well. Mentally as well as physically. She looks like like such a sweetie. I really wish dog owners would be more resonsible. I have to constantly defend my sweet, lovable 10 year old Pit Bull because of stupid, irresponsible, apathetic owners like what you just encountered. I just don't understand how people can be so.....!@#$!@#! You know what I mean? Sorry, I get a little carried away on this subject. This makes me so angry!
