Posted - Jul 08 2009 : 07:15:39 AM We also have a Cletus. There must have been quite of few!
My Great Grandmother was Cheslee Mae. I called her Lee Lee and she didn't like it (I didn't know that at the time though) My uncle is Chesley and we call him Bubba. That's right we too have a Bubba. There was a Lillian, beautiful name but we called her Sissy.
Ojeeta was my Grandfather's name but he went by Aaron. I have a cousin named Candle. We also have a Barnwell who was called Barney. And a Boots who no one can seem to remember her real name.
Then there's me, Tanna.
I'm sure there are more but I can't think of them right now. I'm sure you can tell we are a long line of Southerners from South Carolina, GA, AK, and TX. |

Posted - Jul 07 2009 : 08:08:25 AM Melanie, how were Zillah and Ambrazillah related?
I, too, love that more of the "antique" names are returning to fashion.
Kate, I have an aunt Tootie, but her Christian name is Melissa. Was that your grandma's cousin's Christian name or a nickname?

Posted - Jul 07 2009 : 06:59:49 AM My Grandma's name is Ina, her sister's name was Lloy. She has a cousin named Tootie. (yep, just like the facts of life) My Grandpa named was Milton Sylvester. My other Grandpa had two sisters named Afton and Myrtle. Myrtle was married to Hughie. My (step)Grandpa was originally married to Shorty. I guess she was just a a little peanut. Not sure what her real name is. My son's middle name is Alvin. He hates it, but it is after his Dad's Dad. I scored major DIL points for that, but it isn't why I did it. I just wished I had met Al before he died.
My little Grammy was named Violet, which makes me think of our own Jonni's Violet. I hope her Violet is as sweet as my little Grammy was. Violet had a sister named Ruth, but everyone called her Babe. She was a sweetie too, and both of them lived next door to each other for well over forty years.
I love it that some of the "old" names are coming back.

Posted - Jul 07 2009 : 05:58:23 AM Wow, I loooooove some of these names! I guess Effie must have been the "cool girl's name" of the day, huh? Strange to have so many of them. Were they of German and/or Irish descent?
Cherry, I LOVE Narcissus--that's a beaut! And also Beecher. What a strong first name!

Jonnie, I also had a great grandmother on my father's side named Effie Marquess(maiden name). She was from Kentucky. Small world.
I'll have to get out my family history, (but I'm at work right now). Another great grandmother was named Cleta. My maternal grandfather was Gardner. My half-sister's name is Olitha Inea. Her mother is Guatemalan.

Posted - Jul 02 2009 : 6:46:38 PM I had an Uncle Butch. That was his nickname. His given name was Raymond. I think he was a bully when he was a kid and that's how he got his nickname. I had an Aunt Orrah and her name is the only one that ever seemed different to me.

Posted - Jul 01 2009 : 10:47:38 PM As far as I know, no weird names. Just old fashioned lol
My grandmammy was Maria (I am named after her YAY)granddaddy was Jan. Other grandparents names were Aaltje and his name I won;t mention. It is a normal name here (albeit very old fashioned) but in the USA it "sounds" like sexual intercourse DUH!! YIKES! It is pronounces different here but in English.... My brothers names are (oldest)Jan, (Middle) Franciscus -Frank for short- and me (youngest and only girl) is Marian Jose Bernadette . Momma hated her name, but it was a nice name IMO. Jacobina Geerdina. All Dutch names :)
Hugs from Marian/Dutchy, a farmgirl from the Netherlands :)

Posted - Jul 01 2009 : 12:40:25 PM Misty~~ We won't know till it gets here. We never found out with the others so we won't start now!
The truck and nicknames reminded me of my aunt. Her name is Helen but I have always called her Aunt Leggs. She used to drive a Leggs pantyhose delivery truck when I was little and it had Leggs written in HUGE letters on the side. Everyone called her Leggs, and I think I'm about the only one who still does. When I hear my cousins talk about Aunt Helen, I have to stop and think who it is! I've never thought it wierd till I mention her to others and then wonder if they think I'm crazy! lol

Posted - Jun 30 2009 : 5:02:12 PM Oh...I almost forgot one. I had an Aunt Butch!! She had a gravely voice so her nickname was Butch. I never knew it was a funny name until one of my friends in first grade started laughing when I mentioned my Aunt Butch.
