I have been asking this question on my blog and facebook a couple of times and would love to hear from my MJ Sisters...

I have lived my whole 52 years of life in Colorado and have been really thinking that this might be the time in life for something really different. So I really need some help to start the process.

Have you lived in another country??? What did you like and dislike about it?? Have you been wishing to live in another country after the kids have grown and gone? Has there been a spot in the world that has been calling you and you do not know why???

Please help me start looking outside the box. I have started meditating on it, praying on it and reading a bit but the brain is in overload so would love to hear your thougts... THANKS in advance for sharing - love my sister's great ideas.

Marly you could always tell you dh that he could cozy up by the fire and night and do all those indoor things that cowboys do... I agree why give up your red boots!!! I love Wyoming - but I am not sure I want to live there.. Have tons of friends there and spent a great deal of my childhood camping and exploring there.

I would love to live in Wyoming. But my sweet dh does not like the snow or how cold it is there.
I would wear my red boot every day. However, I could not give up my Cajun ways. LOL

Karin - when I was visiting Iceland I felt like I had come home. It was so strange to feel this for a place I knew very little about but it is like when I spin their is a song that comes over me, peace and joy all at the same time. So I know what you mean. I have been thinking about revisiting Oregon does anyone know about the land prices, living expense and such???

If I believed in reincarnation I'd say I lived other lives in England. I've been fascinated with it since I was a child and would love to live there. Next choices would be the coast of Oregon, or Charlottesville, Va.

Mary I so agree - I have a couple of friends who travel the world as the wind carries them. I also wanted to say I am so very sorry for the drought in your state - how are you all holding up??? I have a couple of friends who have alpaca's down there and they are going under - cost of feed, their electric bills trying to kept the animals from dying in the heat - it is just horrible...

My husband had a dream of being a teacher but he never would give up his business (he was the glue for his whole family not us but his parents and siblings) and he died before ever getting to realize that so I have lived my life up to now in the knowing that we never know how much time we have - that is why I have been listening to this voice within...

"Autumn Spices" is right on !!!! {Neat handle, by the way}. If you have your health and the means GO!! You can always return when ever you want.

Mom always wanted to go to Italy, and never took the opportunity until one day she told me she was "too old" = health wise= to travel. Sad.

We are RVers' and travel as the mood strikes us. My DH has traveled extensively when he was a young man. We love all the places we go.. And HOME is where we hang our hats.

But, my kids and grandkids, and good friends tie me to Central Texas [drought capital of the US these days]. Sooo, we go as the wind blows, but return to "the nest" and love all of it!!

ENJOY YOURSELF... THERE IS JUST ONE TIME AROUND THAT I KNOW OF - AND IF YOU CAN, YOU SHOULD!

Thanks Margaret I will check it out if my library can get it in - WOW that sounds incredible to check out. Crystal I had seen that show too and I have been trying to get the book "Blue Zone" from the Library - it has in there the places in the world that are considered wonderful places to be... I know that you take yourself no matter where you go and so if you are unhappy you have to work on yourself first. I have been doing that for 15 years and find that now I think I am ready to step out and meet my new adventure... I also have a desire to be around folks of like mind and trust me that is not where I live now. I so so love my farm but when I leave it the community I live in is not supportive and kind for my way of thinking...

Love your ideas and support on this...

Grace, for a wonderful look at life in France...get yourself the series of videos "A Year in Provence" it was made years ago, but it still holds true today much in the architecture and the French people. it is my all time favorite PBS series.

Kimberly that sounds amazing... How do you heat at -40 - is it with wood of services.. I love the way you describe the growing life and the animals. Not too sure about the bears and wolfs - we have them here but I have been in places when I was little that going out in the morning meant having to have a gun on you at all times.. I remember being so close to a bear that I could smell his breath - still can smell it to this day some 40 years later. Our camping trailer was once attacked by a Buffalo who had a huge soar on his back and was trying to scratch it to releive himself and in the process almost turned out trailer over. Then there was the time I spent the night in a port a potty because a bear and her cubs decided to camp outside it during my nighty potty needs.. The creatures here stay mostly in my forest but the coyotes and foxes come close to the house. Sure would be different. Thank you so much for sharing that world with me. Sounds incredible.

Kim, I know that area and it truly is beautiful country. My DH and I have driven through often. I do know about the cold when we lived in Kenny Lake AK we often got -40 in the winter. It was fun to show the cheechakos that boiling water tossed into the air would freeze and crackle on the way down and be ice with it hit. ;) Cherime

Grace,

I'm from NE British Columbia. It's an area called the Peace Country because of the Peace River. My town is Fort St. John. Mile 47 of the Alaska Hwy (Alcan). We're in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. I love it because it's home but most folks wouldn't want to move there. It's cold. In the winter -20C is considered normal. When it hits -40C everyone thinks, "hmmm it's getting cold out", I've seen -60C and THAT'S COLD. The summers are lush green with beautiful farms and forests. The fall with take your breath away with all the autumn colors. We've got rivers and creeks everywhere. And wildlife..... we've got it. Moose and deer are considered pests because there are so many. There's wolves, bears, well most everything really. Truthfully, I do love it and if the Lord sent me back I'd be content but I am tired of cold, cold winters and I can grow a larger variety of things here. At home we're a zone 2 or 3 and where I am now I'm a zone 7a. But there's give and take wherever you are. No place is perfect. You just have to find the good and enjoy it and put up with the not so good. Like where I am now isn't nearly as pretty just because it's irrigated desert so it's only green if you water it and there are only trees if you plant them and irrigate them. And the wind! Gracious 80 mile an hour wind is not fun. Folks down here don't know how big a moose or a deer are supposed to be. When I see the deer they hunt I wonder why they bothered. But they are different varieties and the further north you go the bigger the variety.

Excuse the mess & the noise, my children are making happy memories
grace gerber Posted - Aug 16 2011 : 06:47:51 AM
Sorry for being away a bit - work around the farm had to be done. So, back to the hunt!!! I too Kimberly love the trees and mountains - where did you live in Canada?? I have many customers from all over the far north and it seems like they never can agree on a place up there. Some do not like there location others would never leave. So I would love to hear your thoughts....

Does anyone have any great sites to view on line about places - I have been trying to view some when I go into town at the library - I have dial up at home and well there just is never enough time in a day with slow uploads... Today I am watching a British Series and they always have such charming cottages in them - I was horrified to hear of the riots in London - surely not anything close to the charming little thatched roof cottages in my movie..

Well I'm living in a different country now! I'm actually Canadian. Love and miss it. I've lived in CA, ID and now WA. Visited Germany, Switzerland, Austria, France, Lichenstein. Always been fascinated by New Zealand. But if I had to choose my dream location it would be in US or Canada in the mountains with beautiful trees, lakes and rivers and the peace of creation all around me. I love the mountains.

Believe it or not, Wasilla Alaska is just fine with me. I can live here on $2K per month just fine.

I understand times are rough everywhere but some countries are growing and have a better outlook for the people. I have many customers in Denmark and I rind they are excited for what I do - Thanks for the heads up and hope you get to go back soon.

I would definitely choose Denmark or Sweden. Only problem is they are very expensive and therefore not the best place to retire too. If I win the lottery though, I will definitely move there!

I am hoping to go back to both countries in the next few years. They are beautiful and both are happy places.

I know what you mean CJ - I have lived here all my life and there is a part of me who thinks it is a perfect place to live but I also do have a part of me who thinks that I must spread my wings a bit... So each night I pray on it and wait for some guidance. I am enjoying reading of everyone's dreams, desires and plans - gives me something to really think about. I give thanks each morning when I wake up here on my farm with a great view of Pikes Peak and then am greeted by my sweet one's and also the wild life who share's this land with me.

Never in my life have I even questioned where I was to live. Something new in my world.

I live on part of what used to be part of our farmily farm here in southwest Colorado . . . born and raised here. LOVE IT HERE my roots are DEEP!!!! I am of Scottish/Irish heritage and I would love to live . . .but only part time in Scotland. There are many areas of Scotland that I love, but I"m partial to the Borders (where the Armstrongs clan is "seated"), but I love the Highlands around Huntly (which is the clan seat of MY family).
But I love Colorado and it's mountains and stunning beauty too much to not want to live right here. So it would have to be part time in Scotland (the highest mountain in Britain is less than 4000 feet in elevation . . . and their mountains are just nice little "mounds").

Been to the Bahamas and Hawaii . . . Beautiful! However, I believe I'd go nuts with the lack of land mass to explore!!!

Nikki sorry for the delay and love your post. I so agree and have been thinking and looking into what it would cost to store my fiber business and some personal items and then travel around. I have spent a great deal of time in Wyoming and always enjoyed it. I have been to Hawaii and it is still to warm for me but that is an incredible place and I love the fresh fruit at will... Utah is one that I visit mostly as a child and only a couple of times since moving to the farm. I know there you have to be in the right spot for it to be workable. New England I only visited once - in the fall, magical it was but not been there in the summer. So thanks again for your wonderful suggestions and your right more investigations are necessary but you ladies have truely been wonderful about sharing and hope I get more great insights from my MJ Sister's...

Grace,
If I was at the place you are at in your life I would travel like a gypsy all over! But, I would still have my home in Colorado, a base. I would pick all the places abroad, ranging from my first top choices and take 6 months to explore them. I would opt for countries that had certain characteristics that I love! Like climate, food, landscape, hospitatlity, language. If I was whipping out my visa, plane tickets, and backpack, I would definitely choose Greece, the South of France, Italy or even get a job to live in New Zealand. Then I would spend another year traveling in the U.S. Places like; Alaska, Hawaii, the Great Lakes, Utah, the Channel Island, and New England and don't forget Wyoming! I think our own country has a lot to offer. We have a lot of culture, and a variety of foods, and you don't need to learn French, or Italian.
Good Luck, maybe try traveling and sampling what you like before you re-locate! The world has so much to offer, depending on YOUR taste. Enjoy the flavors!!

I would choose to live where all my family and friends are. I wish we weren't all scattered to the winds. I'd give up a good deal if I thought I could get a bunch of my people to live together. I wouldn't even mind if we got called a commune. :)

Grace, it's something like your "tenant" signs a lease to rent a property for a specific amount of time, and then at the end of that lease period, they are expected to have secured financing to buy it from you. It's usually a way for folks who don't have the FICO score to buy to get settled in a home they want to buy so they can work on "making home" while they work on making mortgage.
