This lovely gal gave me quite a start today while I was picking tomatoes. I think she is the largest I have ever seen. Do any of you gals know what type she is? She is big enough to eat one of our chickens!

Keep Smiling.....Bev

Hi Beverly:
Down in Louisiana we have some big spiders just like that! They certainly are beautiful creatures, but ehhhhhh I don't want them on me.

I spotted our first garden spider of the year yesterday in a shady corner of the yard eye level between the orange tree and oak tree.

I just checked in here and saw that this posting has resurfaced again. Wow, after almost a whole year. I have been checking my garden for these lovely gals....I have not seen any yet, but I am sure they will soon spin their lovely webs between my tomato cages.

My hubby's aunt and uncle have several of the garden spiders in their front flower garden. They are fascinating, but I can not STAND spiders so I didn't get too close! I could probably deal with one, but not several!

As for the sprickets, they are real! They're actually called cave or camel crickets. We used to have hundreds of them in our basement growing up... yuck! Between those and the wolf spiders, no wonder I have arachophobia. :)

Ahh she is a beauty! You have a golden orb-as the other ladies mentioned. They are good luck and wonderful bug eaters. They don't bite and you might see smaller versions here and there on her web and hanging about. Those are males. They don't get as big as the females.

Jeanette-I have never heard of a spriket-spiders and crickets certainly can't cross and I can't think of anything that even fits that description. I can't imagine what she's talking about? I think she's pulling your leg ;)

Ok, this was not the help I was searching for. I am plagued by spiders in the house. I don't care if they are outside and really like them out there, but not in the house. I came home to a huge yellow thing today, not the one in the picture. I have no idea what it was but about 1 1/2 inches in body. I HATE SPIDERS. give me the weebbee geebees. I have a crawl space and I know they have taken up home down there. The cats chase them around the house, though they like the crickets best, I find legs everywhere. But if anyone has an idea how to get them out o the house, I'm listening.

My initial is a V... LOL! I think I am doomed the first time one of these pops up in my garden.

I am a spider sissy too..........

I will rescue the snakes, frogs, turtles, birds, bees, crickets, all that stuff just don't show me a spider! lol

Hubby will do spiders just not snakes. One day I saw him out in the middle of the yard, standing up on the tractor seat, what on earth was he doing? Finally I went to investigate becuase he was wasting precious daylight and I learned the was a snake under the tractor and he needed me to get it. lol I wish I got a picture of him up on that tractor. I could of come up with a 1,000 funny captions!

It looks like a giant garden spider to me. I am not fond of spiders, in fact I hate them, but that looks like a garden spider to me. Of course it is hard to tell in the picture, but that one looks like it got in the miracle grow! I always was scared of them when I was a kid, but my dad said they are better than the brown recluse. He got bit by one, they are prevelant around here, and almost lost his hand.

What a beautiful spider. We had a lot of them in our greenhouses. They always co-existed very nicely with us.My Dad just called them garden spiders. They loved the greenhouses because of all the bugs and the humidity. They would live there for ages. It was nice to see one again. I haven't noticed any here in a long while. MJ

Is it awful that I HATE spiders? Seriously they have freaked me out from my bitty baby days. I still shriek upon seeing one. But my new disgust is the centipedes or maybe millipedes that are invading my basement recently - we put a dehumidifier down there but I still get an icky feeling having to head down there to do laundry (see there's a reason for the piles!)

I don't work in a hospital, but as far as ER stories and maggots, you've got to 'google' bot flies.....if you dare! I wouldn't suggest doing this while you're eating, though. lol! If you like spiders, check this out... google 'camel spiders'.

I just read the posts from Amy & Kathie, and I guess I'm wrong. I am SO glad I don't have those in my backyard. Eww. I think I'm gonna make my dh do the push mowing from now on! Sorry, Jeanette for misleading you!

She is a beaut! I have one hanging from an air conditioner at the back of the house. My husband hates spiders, too, but these he likes for some reason, so I get to keep them. Don't quote me, but from what I understand, they are shy, sweet creatures that won't hurt you, as long as you don't try to hurt them. And, no, I've never heard of a spricket, and really, really, really believe she was pulling your leg, Jeanette. They are two different species, and I don't think they would cross successfully. Hope that eases your nightmares!

Thanks Kathie. I feel like the M&M's in the TV commercial when they see Santa Claus, "He does exist!", while Santa looks at the animated M&M's and exclaims, "They do exist!" at which point they both faint. I better be sitting down when if you get to take a pic, I am such a coward when it comes to bugs!

Amy & Kathie,

Quotes:

Amy: AHHHHH Spider crickets is what I am guessing you are talking about...

Kathie: ...as far as a 'Spriket' ya know... There is this nastly bug that I've seen in my yard...

Thanks for letting me know these things DO exist. YUCK!! Well I guess my friend wasn't pulling my leg!

_Rebecca_ Posted - Aug 11 2007 : 09:18:14 AM
The spider in the picture was one that we saw fairly frequently around my yard when I was growing up. It was not unusual at all. I had no idea of the name of it. We just knew it wasn't a black widow or a brown recluse so it was a good spider.

Brown recluses are drawn to bug carcasses so make sure you vacuum in your house really well and don't have bug carcasses anywhere. I'm not sure about black widows. But, those are the two types that are dangerous. The others are ...mostly harmless.
