This lovely gal gave me quite a start today while I was picking tomatoes. I think she is the largest I have ever seen. Do any of you gals know what type she is? She is big enough to eat one of our chickens!

My favorite one, Bev. That's what I know as the Golden Garden Spider. They are so beautiful! I remember an old wives tale that said that if you found your initial in the zig zag sewing like stitch in the middle of the web, you would die soon - scary! :(

Hmm.. that's a HUGE spider huh?
Didn't we used to call those Banana Spider's when we were kids..
Probably because of the color..
or was that a different Spider?

I'm sooo glad you posted that!! I found one in the house last night and had no idea what it was!! I scooped it up and tossed it outside! However , mine had a solid tan color body. Creeps me out! All at once we are overcome with spiders. I wonder if this means we'll have an early Fall or something?

Ooh! She's pretty, isn't she! We have a lot of those! I hate to do it (ok, that's a fib) but sometimes I throw bugs that I don't like into their web--it's the most amazing thing you've ever seen, these spiders descending upon the helpless buggie, wrapping with speed and precision.

Janice, I've never heard that old wives tail! Spooky! I have to say, though, it seems that they are the only spider I've noticed in my yard that does do that "lace up zig zag".

Wow Bev! I have seen them before and they are big! What a beautiful picture you took! What a web! Last week while in bed I felt something coming down my forehead ! I swiped it off my face and turned the light on! There was a HUGE spider with red legs and a big fat bottom! I just about died ! Still trying to recover!

Hugs,

She sure is a beauty.....if only she ate Japanese Beetles.....I think our farm is the world's largest mating zone for those nasty beetles. They are constantly doing "it" on my green beans....YUCK!!!!!!

That's an amazing spider, and a beautiful picture! The insects here in Arizona are pretty dull-looking, not too many bright colors (nothing bright to blend with, I suppose, just browns!).

I wonder if we could all try to capture a picture of the strangest/ scarriest thing we have come across and post it. I would be interested to see what other spiders and creepies are on everyone else's farm!

Thank you for posting this -I was wondering what these were. I have one that built a web next to the new goat pen (in a tree, of course) and found another one like this in the front pasture by the gate. They are really big - as long as my hand (from leg to leg) and very bright yellow. They are also NOT afraid of people. She just moved over while I put up the fencing by her web, then moved back when I was done. Meawhile she kept sucking on the bug popsicle she was wrapping... (Ugh!)

I don't know if they eat Japanese beetles, but they do like wasps!

Oh, she's beautiful!! We had one take up residenc in our house when we were rebuilding after our fire. She lived in the corner of the living room for weeks. Kindof creeped out the workers, but they were under penalty of death if they touched her. One day, we watched her move back outside to the garden. I think she was bringing us good luck. :)

I had a friend from North Carolina who swore on a stack of bibles that there's a bug there called a "spriket". I may have the spelling wrong. She claims it's a cross between a spider and a criket. Ladies, was she pulling my leg or what? I still have nightmares about a gigantic spriket coming to get me!

Beverly - with this much attention surely this beauty deserves a name too! What will it be?
Molly - the thought of a creepy crawly thread just made me laugh. should would be interesting - like a science lab! I'd have to just peek first tho' to make sure they weren't too scary looking.

I LOVE spiders.. i just don't want to be surprised.. !
& & Jenny .. My Husband is scared beyond resonable belief of spiders too.. I'm talking.. embarressing.. Remember On home alone whe the Spider lands on the guys face? That Screeming like a woman that he did? THAT would be my Husband..
& The REALLY bad thing is.. I would LOVE to have a few Tarantula's.. even raise them.. I thought the man was going to pass out by my even mentioning it!!
This beauty though.. i think they mostly live outside though.. don't they?
& as far as a 'Spriket' ya know... There is this nastly bug that I've seen in my yard.. Not so scare you any worse then you already are pumpkin.. But it DOES behave this way.. I'll see if i can get a picture of it.. & see if the hellion kids next door know the name of it.. (That should keep them busy & out of my hair for a couple days..!)
But YES.. Looks Spidery.. & Also Crickety too!!
Huh oh.. Cross breeding in the Arachnids!!!

I'm learning quite a few things on this forum! I googled this spider and although it is very beautiful, I wouldn't want to have one crawling on me, or run into it's web. I wouldn't kill it though...in fact, I get a lot of spiders in my home (mostly small ones). Occasionally, I'll get Wolf spiders, which to me are big, but I leave them alone...or I'll get a glass, capture it, and put it back outside. Spiders are pretty cool! I'm also learning about horses (fuglyhorse blog on other thread) and bot flies (ugggggh!! another thread about little Dachshund, Lucy). There's all kinds of funky stuff on farms! You can't be too squeamish living on one.

I love theses spiders they are pretty and trap all those nasty bugs in my garden. One spun her web across our kitchen window last fall and everybody in our family wanted to see the spider everyday . Watching her wrap up her prey was amazing. She laid her egg sac on the web at the kitchen window and it stayed there all winter . We watched this spring and one day the sac was gone but I did think I saw some baby spiders! I hope one comes back this year it was a great excuse not to wash my window!

We used to have a huge Wolf Spider that lived in our cabin. He was amazing and I loved to go see what he had caught. I swear he was big enough to hunt mice!

Okay, now I am officially grossed out!!!!!!I don't mind tiny ones and shoo them outside but big ones, they can stay outside thank you and do their jobs. Maybe that is because one I was a kid had a couple, what we called cedar spiders plop on me, they are big and ugly and creepy lookin and as a kid, no way.
Although I did play with garter snakes and frogs. Go figure!!!!!!

Enjoying life.
