My 94 year old father-in-law passed away yesterday morning after a brief illness.

The family is in the process of finalizing funeral arrangements and my son will be flying in from Nashville barring any escalation of our wintry weather dominating today and tonight.

Harold was pretty unique-quiet-steady as the sun with a keen sense of humor. He wasn't overly demonstrative regarding affection, but I remember one time where he came up to me and gave me a big hug-a rare thing and it only happened once where I didn't initiate it. He knew I was hurting-never said a word just gave me a big old bear hug-I'll never forget that. He was a devoted father-husband and pillar of his church... a man who had seen pretty much everything and rolled with the good times and the bad times--- I really liked the old hickory nut---He will be missed.

Melody...so sorry for your loss!! He lived to be a good age though! I have always believed that I would live to bes 94 also.
Somedays I think why on earth would you want to live to be that old??? My husband said that I will probably fall dead on
my 94 birthday. LOL Probably! I hope you can delight in the good memories of him.

Hugs and Prayers for your Family,
Peggy

Sounds like he had a good long run and a life well lived. I wonder if they're still making great old men. I read an essay one time by Pat McManus...he said that he didn't have an old man of his own as a boy, but was lucky enough to borrow one from a friend who moved away. The old man took him fishing and hunting, taught him how to build a fire in the snow and how not to complain about cold feet. I think the essay was called "The Care and Application of Old Men," or something like that. It was precious. Your tribute to your FIL made me think of it.

Hi Melody
My prayers are with you and your family. Your father in law is thriving in his new custom mansion I am sure. No aches no pains and from what you described probably utilizing his keen sense of humor with the other saints. Hard to loose a wonderful person such as him. Once again, during this time of loss prayers for the ones that love him.

Melody, So sorry for your loss. I will keep you, family and friends in my thoughts and prayers.
He sounds like a wonderful man and lucky you to have him and the wonderful memories in your life.
I had to smile as I reflected on your comment about the hug. Isn't it fascinating how a perfectly timed hug (or any action) from someone can be a cherished memory. Especially when it is not their normal behavior. Your memory has reminded me, give that hug or that compliment or whatever. It could be just what the person needs.
