I posted a picture at the blog of the unwanted guest we had tonight. Oh my gosh. Do I live in Arizona???? 110 degree heat and then this?? It was trying to get into our front door. Pigmy rattlers are especially dangerous because you can't hear them. They only have a tiny button rattle.

Exactly why I let the snakes live in the garden. We are known for copperheads on this hill ( I really mean that) but haven't seen one so far all year. Knock on wood. I can't wait to get all the construction stuff away from the house. That makes me nervous cause they like to live in piles of boards and bricks and burn piles. I don't want to leave the light on for them. ; )

I think that the reason we have all of a sudden started having poisonous snakes is because I think our neighbors must be killing the good snakes. We had a monstrous king snake that loved to hang out in our well house and our peach trees and we had a couple of big hog nosed snakes too. They have disappeared. They always kept the other snakes away.

Eek! I would've been slinging a shovel and everything I could throw at it. I am like Jen and not compatible with snakes. We've never seen one out here and I think it's probably because of having so many cats around (I only have one but all the neighbors combined probably makes around 20). We do tend to find scorpions a lot.

EW EW EW EW!!! creepy, legless belly wriggling, soulless blighters!! Last summer I found one drowned on the second step of the our swimming pool, rigor-ed in a curled up, mouth open striking position. SCARY!!!! When I was a teen I never went hiking or horseback riding in the bush without a .22 or a high powered pellet rifle. Snakes and I are not compatible. I would be willing to get a pet rhinoceros if it 100% guaranteed I would never have a snake on my property. (I'm pretty sure that rhinos have no connection to snakes... but I think you all can get my hyperbole.)

LOL Yep! Our big rat snake in the garden has a nephew. He is about a third the size of his uncle.

Yep, where there's one, there's usually more!! I am never going out in flip flops again. This one was bigger than the one we found last year and I have a funny feeling it's got cousins.

Yikes! And here I'm afraid of the little gardener snakes here in IL! Thank goodness you didn't step on it. I'd wear work boots all the time if I had any of those snakes around my area.
I hope you never see another one again in your yard!

Snakes are one thing that gives me the uggies. I know they are valuable in the ecosystem, but they certainly belong on my top list of critters I don't enjoy coming "face to face" with, much less a poisonous one!!
