Although I don't deal with the same cold as you Northerners do, once it turns the least bit cold here in Texas and we have to turn on the heat, my skins turns horribly dry, especially my face. What type of face lotion do you use?

I usually don't use moisturizer. Only when I have a cold I use a thin layer of vaseline on selected part of my face.

If I have to put makeup on before I do I use clinique so the foundation can go on smoothly. I don't wear makeup only for special occasion.

Holly, my skin has suddenly become extremely sensitive and "reactive" lately, too - again, like you, probably due to hormones (but I'm in my mid-gulp-forties now). I know very little about castor oil, except that it is soluble in alcohol, and that it has the ability to coat and seal hair (helps keep in the shine). So, having said that, maybe it will be okay if you use the olive oil/castor oil cleanser and follow up with a toner to remove any residue. But if you're going to use anything with an alcohol base as a toner, you will wreak havoc with your skin. When skin dries, it becomes almost scaley (for lack of a better description), and then skin cells start to separate, leaving room underneath and between for dirt and oil to lodge and create irritation. That's why it's so important to exfoliate and be sure to remove the dead skin layers. Alcohol is very, very drying as we all know, so that is very, very bad for your skin. My paternal grandmother always swore that witch hazel was the perfect astringent and toner because it doesn't contain any alcohol - she used it her whole life and had the most amazing complexion. The other thing I'm concerned about is castor oil's "sealing" properties... it may be good for keeping in moisture, but what else would it seal onto your skin - residue, dirt, oils... I don't know about that one. I would probably stick to just using the olive oil. But trust me, that aloe/milk/cream cleanser I have been using has been an absolute godsend. Aloe vera is very healing to the skin (if you have time, please read up on it - it's an amazing plant!); and the fat in the milk along with its vitamin D really does something special. No irritation, and you receive smooth, clean, supple skin. It's amazing. I'm thrilled with it! Good luck! - Nini

I posted yesterday on Farmgirl Fashion about allergic reactions and was directed here. Seeing all of the olive oil comments encouraged me to "google" and I found a site that recommends using olive oil (or sunflower seed oil) and castor oil as a cleanser. Has anyone tried this? To recap briefly, my skin has problem break-outs (largely due to hormones), and is dry and extremely sensitive. (I'm returning a fortune in Clinique cleansers this weekend.) I've tried expensive and I've tried cheap and haven't found anything my skin can tolerate for very long. I would love to try something like the oil cleanser- it may be just what I need. Understandably I'm leery - what are your thoughts?

LOL! I dunnooooo about the coffeemate, there, Judy... ;) You're too funny! LOL! But you don't need the dry milk, really... I usually have it on hand because I use it in my homemade granola... Come to think of it, I wonder if I could just "powder" the granola? It's got all good stuff in it, after all! Can't be worse than coffeemate! LOL!

All kidding aside - I don't think you need the dry milk. I think any combo of ingredients will work. And you can use ground nuts like almonds, too! :) Let me know what you come up with! :)

I also love using a handful of almond oil or grapeseed oil as a pre-shampoo conditioner, too - it's amazing! You can leave it on for just a minute, or you can leave it on for an hour - however much time you have to pamper your tresses! But I strongly recommend you still use your regular conditioner afterwards - I have no idea why, but it really helps remove any oil stickiness. Your hair will be GORGEOUS! (<<Please read that as if you're hearing me say it in a sing-songy voice, k?) ;)

I can't believe that really great, healthy skin care can be so simple! Imagine all the money I could've been saving all these years, not to mention keeping my skin chemical-free!

ENJOY!!! - Nini

Nini, thank you for all the pure, natural beauty recipes. I love it. I don't have any dry milk on hand, can I sub something else? Do I really need it? All I have in that department is coffeemate. LOLOLOL Just not the same!!
Lisa...I do like a cup of hot water with lemon and honey when I first get up in the morning. Warms the insides and sort of gets things started.

Tammy - I am so glad you posted that! My rep keeps telling me that they haven't changed their formulas, and I'm sure she believes it, but... well... I can tell you my skin thinks differently!

So, girls - here's what I've been doing for the past couple of weeks - give or take - and my skin is amazing, clean, no clogged pores.. nada. Just soft, smooth, and lovely skin:

I mix 1/4 cup Aloe Vera gel (I use the digestible kind, because that's all I have on hand), 1 Tbsp. of 1% organic milk and 1 Tbsp. organic half and half (again, that's all I have on hand... you can use whole milk, cream - whatever you have on hand). Shake it up in a glass jar, store unused portion in the refrigerator - will stay "fresh" for a few days. I use this to wash my face day and night - skin is left soft, smooth and very fresh looking.

As a moisturizer (because at my age I need it!) I was first using plain Vitamin E oil over my slightly damp skin, which worked nicely, but it wasn't cutting it for the wrinkles around my eye area. So I tried using a little wee bit of coconut oil all over my face and neck - it works WONDERS! Even the fine lines are starting to fade!

To exfoliate, I've been using a combo of equal parts of dried oats, cornmeal, dry milk and wheat germ, finely ground together and stored in a jar... When I use them - and they can be used all over - I simply take a handful, squirt in a shot of vitamin e oil, rub GENTLY into my face and then rinse clean. It's a miracle. I've also used the grains mixed with the cleanser with success.

My skin is just so soft, so clean and so smooth now. I am absolutely amazed. And I don't have any reaction to any of this, except for when I exfoliate, of course - even a little gentle massaging with that will bring on a very temporary red glow. But when I'm done with it - WOWZA! I can't believe what I'm seeing!

So, good luck and give it a whirl, girls - I'd love to hear if you find the same success with this! Hugs - Nini

Oh my gosh! I felt silly saying olive oil, but it looks like I'm not alone! And always drink plenty of water. If you're too cold (yep, new nor-easter is coming tomorrow), how about some hot water with a touch of lemon and honey? Still hydrating, but tastes better and warms your bones! :)

Yes...water is a BIG important factor, and sorry to say, the most ignored....especially in winter when a glass of cold water just doesn't hit the spot! LOL

Since I have gotten older (47) my skin has changed so much.

I recently started using Weleda's Almond Intensive Facial Creme. It has worked great! As soon as I started using it I noticed that the little lines around my eyes have slowly diminished.

I drink plenty of water and I think that makes a big difference as well as what your diet is like.

I have heard that Coconut Oil is great for your skin too!

I make my own. I have oily skin but it gets flaky on top. I take sweet soy bean oil and blend with essential oil to make my sweet soy serium for skin. My husband swears by it as do the ladies who purchase from me ( i sell herbal products at farmers markets). For my skin I take a couple of drops of oil and mix it with pure aloe vera juice. Great moisturizer!

No special olive oil Nancy. I've even used Dollar General's $2.00 special, and it's been fine for me.

Nini- I use to swear by Mary Kay products too and even became a rep which is when I found out that they're constantly changing the formulas to keep it "new and improved". I started having reactions to it and they're skin techs kept telling me it wasn't their products it had to be something else. As soon as I quit using the products my skin quit breaking out. Another example was right before I quit selling it they changed the lipsticks and started putting perfume in them like another high end company was doing but didn't tell anybody. All of a sudden we were getting a ton of phone calls from people saying their lips were breaking out, cracking, etc.... which is when we were told about the perfume being added.

just now came back on and saw this. so yes i can post where to find her products. she sells mostly through qvc. the products seem expensive but really are not. they seem to last me a long time. you only use a small amount of the lotion at a time. the eye cream smells like coffee. i LOVE it. it reduces puffy eyes FAST. i find if i buy one of the offers that have a few products in it, then total is cheaper. she has one with mascara and eye cream and a face foundation for a good price. she will give back your money if you find something you dont like. in my opinion truly fine stuff. it is spelled 100% pure is the name. hope it helps happy days sherrye

I heard that too Belle, and just look at her skin. I too have used grape seed oil mixed with my olive oil and a Vit E capsule squeezed into it. I read somewhere that you need Vit E as a preservative.I figured...OK...Couldn't hurt! ;)

Well, since I am over 60, my skin has changed alot. I think the oil from my skin left with my eyesight and using most soaps left my skin, including arms & legs cracked like the Mohave desert. I started using a soap from Swan Mountain Soaps that I found on etsy. She lives in Alaska & talked about their skin & dryness during the winter, Having lived there, I knew that to be true. I love her soaps for the shower or bath. For my face moisturizer, I use what a dermatologist suggested. It is Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion. I get the pump container from Costco and it lasts quite a long time. My skin does not itch, peel or flake anymore.

Another vote for Olive Oil here. Grape seed oil is another good one. I heard or read that Sophia Loren(sp) also uses olive oil.

Since I'm constantly working in dusty conditions, most of the really heavy facial moisturizers are too much.

That, and I have a scent sensitivity that causes migraines, so anything ultra perfumey I avoid like the plauge.

So sometimes it will be Giovanni winter raspberry. It is heavy but I use it at night. My favorite thus far is Australian Gold tan extender moisture lock.

This was discovered accidentally a few years ago while at the beach. It works so well, I ended up ordering more online and use it all the time.

I can't think of the name but it's by Loreal for menopausal skin. Something like Renew. It has a squeezey stopper thing in the top and only about the size of a dime is all you need. Under my makeup (Almay), it works great and my skin looks better than in a long time. I use Loreal lotion of some sort on the days I don't use the Renew stuff. Seems like now, with my older skin, the more expensive lotions work better. When I was younger, I could use just about anything, not so much now....

I use Avalon's Organics with vitamin C. It doesn't cause me to break out in hives of acne, absorbs quickly and keeps my 50 year old face looking fresh.

My yoga teacher skin was beautifule was in her 60's and she used olive oil. the dematologist took me of of all make up and I have to be very careful with anything I put on my skin.(I am known as a stinger by cosmetic companies....they will pay us to try their cosmetics to see if we break out...can't pay me enough) anyway...Crisco and olive oil does work for me.....I wish I had part of the money I have spent trYing all brands...even organic... I am 65 and confess that I have not taken the best care of my skin, but am trying to do a bit better. I agree that the price of the item has nothing to do with working for us. i saw an interview of 2 women on one of the talk show (Today) and they had written a book on cosmeticis and what they contianed. i think the title was "don't give me that dirty look." If any of U have seen it, Please let me know. I am going to read the suggested reading on this share. Thanks for listening.
