If so, are you going to camp out? What do you want so badly that you would do so??

No way would I go. I value my life and health too much!! But that's just me!!

I agree with Nicole and Grace. Holidays were established to give everyone time to stop for a day to celebrate or reflect on an important event in national history. Everyone should be able to have those entire days off to spend with their family - including employees at major department and grocery stores. There are about 355 other days in a year for sales to go on and people to get their shopping done. This business of starting to celebrate the next holiday before the last one has happened is absolutely rediculous!

I agree Nicole - I think about those folks who have to work in the stores - do not they deserve a life, time with family, a holiday celibration?? It seems that all the holidays are just about purchasing and consuming for the sake of it. I find this a bitter pill to swallow - I sell my goods from the animals I raise and the fiber I shear but I do not do all this "special sales" - I fell I give you a fair price all year long, quality products that will last generations and great customer service no matter if you are purchasing $4.00 or $400.00. I understand bottom line more then most with the cost of everything going thru the roof which I too have to pay but would my customers feel better if I doubled my price thru the year so I could cut it in half just for a couple of days of "Black" sales??? If that is what folks are calling a bargin well it is nuts to me...

I'm with so many of you on this. I feel strongly about this. There is no material item on earth, even as a bargain, that would warrant me going out in that. I hate that now the stores around here open at 3 am on Thanksgiving, some even open Thanksgiving Day! What is wrong with us all that we have forgotten the meaning of holidays like Christmas and Thanksgiving, with the big companies saying SHOP SHOP SHOP, only to then be open now CHRISTMAS DAY to take them all back and exchange them. Do you remember that poor young man, I think in New Jersey, who was a WalMart greeter and was trampled to death a year or so ago when he opened the doors? I feel if I support companies opened like that, before long, all companies will be open and there will be no more holidays. Sorry, girls, I just feel REALLY strongly about this.

I made it unscathed too! The mall opened at 7 and I got there a little after 7. Parked not too far away. Walking is good for you anyway!! Found some awesome deals for those on my list.

ALso made it to Best Buy since I was in the area anyway. It was like an ant hill, but they are so efficient at it, I only stood in line for maybe 15 minutes tops.

All that bargian shoppng made me very hungry for that early in the morning, so it was a relief to see everything open in the food court.

I'm gonna start saving $$ now and look forward to this next year.

Some good survival tips coild be

1. take a comfortable bag with you to put department store bags into. This way they plastic won't cut into your hands or you can prevent having to carry a plastic bag all together this way. 2. wear the most comfortable shoes you have 3. eat a good breakfast but pack a drink and snack 4. plan your route 5. save $$ throughout the year so you can spoil yourself and have fun

At the very least, this makes for excellent people watching and affords some calories to be burned off from the day before with all the walking

Just got back from Black Friday at the dreaded Wal-Mart. It was actually kind of fun. Everyone was polite and in a good attitude- handing things to each other and helping direct people to various displays. The employees were extremely helpful and very kind in helping to find and do price checks etc. I got Nora a kid tough digital camera for $19. She LOVES taking pictures. She steals my cell phone to take pictures and obsesses about my digital camera. So now she can have her own. I also got her some slippers for $3.50 because her preschool has all the kids wear slippers inside instead of their wet shoes. I also spent a LITTLE money on myself and got a Shark Steamer!!! I am so excited! I have wanted one for forever!!

Has anyone else noticed that many of the black Friday deals are available online with free shipping? Why try to find parking? Especially since we are expecting snow!

Nope! No way, no how! Not me!!!
I'm not into the commercialism and "buy everything" mentality.

Besides that, MJF's calendar says it's "Buy Nothing Day" . . .

It's possible-I need to get some vitamin shopping done, and there's a B&N in the same shopping complex. Been making most gifts this year, won't be doing the camp out tho, maybe go after 10AM. I could use another blank book as I keep a gratitude journal/diary and the one I have now is getting close to being fully used. "They" need to come up with a better name than "black friday" sounds so gloomy! *laughs* wonder where the term came from?

Thanks for clearing up the Black Friday mystery for me, Mary Jane. That makes sense. It seemed such a gloomy name! But, it's really good news.

I'm still not going to go and I"m 5'8". I'm not sure there is a safe height for the occasion.

It is called Black Friday because retailers are supposed to make a lot of money that day and not be in the red anymore(debt). It is supposed to be the busiest and most profitable day of the year. I don't go to any of the early morning sales. Tom and I enjoy going out later sometimes and just looking around, it's much quieter later on in the day. There are usually good sales still going on all the holiday season. I'd get trampled for sure I am only 5' tall lol!

I think it is amazing that people may already be lined up for bargains. Does that mean they are passing on Thanksgiving altogether? Wow. Count me out on Black Friday (why is it called Black Friday anyway) I'm too lazy and cold-blooded to venture out that early in this cold!

Happy Thanksgiving Farmgirls

Saw a post via FB about 7 people already lined up at a Best Buy in Ohio. The line was already 7 deep!

That's TOO extreme and I certainly need NOTHING that badly!

Would much rather enjoy some great turkey and time with family where it's WARM!
edlund33 Posted - Nov 22 2010 : 11:18:05 AM
No way! No how! We don't even ask our employees to work on Black Friday because the traffic gets jammed up downtown and backed up to a standstill in front of our equipment storage yard which is about 2 1/2 miles from the mall. It's a great day to stay home and work on cards and handmade gifts or start baking for the holidays. I prefer to shop local small businesses or online and do most of my shopping before Thanksgiving when there aren't any crowds. Then I can stay home and enjoy my Thanksgiving weekend.

Cheers! ~ Marilyn

I'm working all day Friday, but if I had the day off or knew someone that's going there's one thing that I need. And it's not a gift for anyone cause most of those I make. Menard's has a heater very similar to the Eden Pure heaters- it may be an I Heater- for $69. It's $80 off the original price and I could probably use another one to get through the winter. I have a couple of Eden Pure(s) and they are about $300 a piece. And even though I could really use that heater and it would save me a ton money, in the end I don't think I'd venture out to get it. But yeah if I had a friend that loved those sales and was going I'd sure give them a little extra money for their trouble to pick it up for me.

I totally missed the ball and could have spent this holiday w/ my brother and camped out with him. But he's in JaX florida and it would purely be for the sister/brother bonding time............something we can certainly do w/o the press of too many people all in a panic.

Alee Posted - Nov 22 2010 : 09:24:44 AM
Yes, but only for one thing. Wal-Mart has their winter coats on sale, or at least they did last year, for only $5. I bought one last year and someone stole it out of my truck. But now I am very cold so I am going for a need, not a want. :)

Nope. I don't shop at those places (commercial big box stores) any other time of the year, so I'm not likely to support them during the holidays.

Also, I dislike crowds, but especially nasty spirited ones. And that seems to be all that the holidays have boiled down to!

My "Black Friday" tradition, which has taken shape in the last 6 years or so, is that I take a drive out into the country as far as I can and see what little towns I can get into.

I agree that there is no way I will go shopping on BLACK FRIDAY. Besides that, we have about 2 inches of snow on the ground and our street doesn't get plowed, so I'm not going to endanger myself or anyone else just to save a buck or two.

I go shopping with my mom and a group of friends, but we stay away from the big chain stores. Instead we visit the little local boutiques, craft shops, etc. and go out for lunch together. It is always a really fun day - and no crowds!!

There is no amount of money worth saving to have my holiday spirit ruined by people puching, fighting and actling like they will trample you to get a deal.

I would rather clean my oven with a toothbrush than go shopping on that day! I hate shopping at the big box stores and malls. I would rather shop in small boutiques and second hand stores. Most of my Christmas presents I make, so no need to go battle the crowds. I also get a little sick to my stomach when I see all the commercialism and the hype. So many people get in debt trouble during the holidays and forget the true meaning of Christmas. Anyway I won't be there, I have an appointment with a dirty oven!
