My son was just let go from WalMart. He is deaf and was having a hard time with the test that they require and then today they let him go all together and said it was because he was to slow. He uses sign language and could not answer the customers questions. I am very upset and disappointed and will probably cry but, I have a five O'clock appointment and can not leave work now. I just wanted to vent. Thanks for letting me.

I work with DD and SN adults and I am appalled some days when I take them shopping and the people in line are rude when it takes then a few extra seconds to write out a check for the purchases. Is it not their right to live in the same world and to have independance. Some day those people might just need some help or become a bit slower. My prayers go out to you and your son. Hopefully some thing can be done with Wal-mart. I just hate that place. They come into small towns, wipe out the other competitors and we are left with just them.

Wal-Mart is a terrible place. But, along the lines of his other degree my Daughter is also having a problem finding a job in that field. She graduated a year and a half ago and although she found a job right away she got laid off 6 months later and is now working part time in a pet store. I hope things get better for you son.

I work at a community college in Maryland and work with students who need disability support of all kinds. According to the 1973 American's with Disabilities Act, this is definitely discrimination
and could get WalMart in trouble. They can't just fire your son but will have to accomodate him in a position that will allow him to work dispite the fact that he is deaf. They knew when they hired him that he was deaf and it is their responsibility to met the challenge.
Hope this helps,

Bonnie

I agree...Sam Walton is rolling in his grave to see what his heirs are doing to the decent discount store he originally started.....shame isn't it? But I'm afraid it is a sign of the times and all that matters in retail is the bottom line.....'nuf said.

I live in Walmart country, near the home offices. It is so far away from what Sam Walton created, in my opinion. My prayers go out to your son to find an employer who values him, not uses him.

I have a friend with a mentally challenged son who works at Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart let him go, but his mom called the main office. It was looked into, and her son was hired back. Good luck. Hugs to both of you.

Well another day and we are both feeling better. I have a cousin who is an attorney and I am going to contact her and see if she can send a letter or something to The Powers that be at WalMart. I never want him to go back there and I will not be shopping there. I only want them to realize the damage that one person can do to someone who is trying hard to just lead a normal life. He is just a really good person and it hurts my heart that he has to try twice as hard as most people. You have as always been so good and nurturing and I will give him a hug from his friends at Mary Janes.

Will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers. Hope he finds a job doing something he loves to do soon. That will show stinky Walmart, lol! That was so totally unfair, poor kid. Give him lots of hugs from us and know that we are all backing him up and sending you all good wishes.

Walmart new when they hired him he was deaf. They should have realized the situation then and besides why couldn't he justs stock their items and not have to have a problem with answering customers. I hate that store anyway. Yesterday I was there picked up a pair of pants that had 3
not just 1 but 3 price markdowns of the same amount they were shorts and all are marked down the girl tried to tell me they were marked wrong and looked at me as if I had done it. By rights she should have sold them to me for that amount that is our state law, but no she just didn't care if she sold them or not.

I, also, urge you not to let this go. Walmart has a history of discrimination and should not be allowed to continue with it. Please, for your son and any other challenged citizen - fight them.

I'm so sorry for him. I hope he knows that it's not him - it's Walmarts Bad!

I'm so sorry for your son, Delicia. Dang it, I become distraught when things like this happen. There are times that suits are in order, and I would say this is one of those times! I would encourage you to contact an attorney! And I also agree with Laurie, God has much bigger and better plans for him!! Hugs and Smiles, Lin

First let me say that I am sorry for your son's loss. Second I totally agree with everyone else that is telling you to consult a lawyer..again I am not one to yell "sue" at the first sign of "trouble" but this crosses the line! He was hired, knowing that he had a disability- to fire him because of it is just plain wrong!
I wish you both the best and can totally relate to what you said about it being so hard to see your child hurt.
Best of luck to the both of you- I know God has much bigger and better plans for him.
Smiles,
Laurie

The Americans with Disabilities Act has a clause which states that an employer MUST provide "reasonable accommodation". It sound like Wal-Mart didn't in this case, especially since they were aware of his disability. I would talk to a lawyer. This is not up for negotiation; the employer MUST obey the law.

Thank you all for your support and kind words. They said that he was too slow checking the fruit. He is blind to the left of either eye because when he was 13 he had a brain aneurysim and that caused his vision problem. He was born deaf and then with the eye issues later it is hard. He is such a great person and really functions very well. He graduated from College in up state New York but, can not find a job in his line. It is graphics with computers. I know that God has something better for him it is just hard for me to see him struggle when it appears to come so easy for others. I know that I am not walking in their shoes and that all people have struggles it is just hard to see your child hurt. You are all wonderful and make me feel much better. Thank you so much.

I am sorry for your son. It is hard on self-esteem when being let go. I think I would look into it though. See if maybe they can place him somewhere else in the company. Sometimes our children's trials are harder on us Mom's than they are on them. Hugs to you and your son.

the Americans with disabilities act requires that they try to find a job he can do with his disability. I would consult a lawyer, and I'm not prone to suing. perhaps he could work in the warehouse or somewhere he doesn't need to answer questions from the customers?? I'm sorry that he has been treated so shabbily. Phyllis
