Pass The Butter ... Please.

Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back.
It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow coloring and sold it to people to use in place of butter. How do you like it? They have come out with some clever new flavorings..

DO YOU KNOW.. The difference between margarine and butter?
Both have the same amount of calories.
Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams; compared to 5 grams for margarine.
Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.
Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods.
Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few and only because they are added!
Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavors of other foods.
Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years .

And now, for Margarine..
Very High in Trans fatty acids .
Triples risk of coronary heart disease .
Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol)
Increases the risk of cancers up to five times..
Lowers quality of breast milk.
Decreases immune response.
Decreases insulin response.

Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC... and shares 27 ingredients with PAINT

These facts alone were enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance).

You can try this yourself:
Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it open in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will notice a couple of things:
* no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something)
* it does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value ; nothing will grow on it. Even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not a find a home to grow. Why? Because it is nearly plastic . Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?

Linda, thank you so much for posting this information! I've told so many people over the years that margarine is the equivalent of plastic and some of them look at me like I've got 4 eyes....or the funniest one is the sympathetic look as if to say "poor thing, she's lost it completely"!! I didn't know about the turkeys and I didn't know about the fly/bug test. I absolutely love your last statement!!! I will pass that info onto several! Thank you! Hugs and Smiles, Lin

Linda, I'm SO glad you posted this, my late dh had a heart attack about 15 yrs. ago, his cardiologist recommended we start using butter instead of margarine and we did. I have a neighbor down the road who suffered a slight heart attack a couple yrs. ago, her dr. told her to stay away from butter and use the "fake stuff", she's pretty hard headed and I cannot for the life of me convince her that "real" is better than margarine, or the artificial spreads. I did forward this to her and she said it made sense, but also confused her.....oh well, I tried, and I'm so glad I still use the real thing!!

I grew up eating margarine because I was allergic to dairy but now I won't touch the stuff with a 10 foot pole. Real butter all the way for me!

Thanks so much for this info. It's getting to where you just don't know what to eat. All natural is the way and if you know where it's from.

My Grandma always uses margarine, even though I tell her that there's really no difference and that butter is actually better for you! I think that's disgusting about the whole plastic thing!

OH WOW! thanks for the info.......and with corn on the cob season just 'round the corner, I'll continue to buy BUTTER!

So is the spreadable butter equally as bad as margarine?

If so I'll be purchasing a few of those corn on the cob ear cradles and just melt my butter in one of these!

In some recipes I do not substitute margarine for butter. If calories are the deal breaker, i'll usually just consume less!

and the real thing is for sure far tastier!

So those "butterball" turkeys are really margarine balls? ugh!

I will always choose the "real" thing over anything artificial and after reading your post it just reminds me of why...

Linda, I'm old enough to remember those packs of white stuff with the little orange "tablet" in the center. You broke the tablet open and massaged it around in the white stuff. I want to do more research on the turkey subject. Makes sense that if the turkeys died that they would feed it to humans. LOL

First of all, I can't imagine why anyone would want to eat food that is made in a laboratory anyway. Secondly, margarine tastes terrible in recipes...it just really does! Bleech!

I had heard this before, in fact, several years ago when I was only 44 I had a heart attack. Afterward I attended rehab and that was discussed margarine vs. butter, they say butter is better! Still today people ask me why I eat butter and not margarine!

Oh my goodness! I knew it was "suspect", being man made but had no idea just how badly it can affect our health. Absolutely LOVED your last sentence, too! Thanks for sharing this with everybody, Linda. Have a great day! Nance
