Okay, I am just wondering what is your opinion on girls, young /& mature women getting tatoos? or piercings other than ears.

This is such a timely subject for me. I was watching all the little girls in their Easter dresses last weekend when I noticed a temporary tattoo sticking out from under the shoulder strap of a girl who looked about 4 years old. I just had to chuckle to myself and think, how did tattoos become so much part of our mainstream? I see little ones with "tats" all over the place.

I myself have one tattoo and I love having it. I was 37 when I got it and felt I was secure enough that I wouldn't regret it later. I got it a week after my mom died and although I wouldn't recommend getting one under any kind of strong emotional influence, it felt right to me. I also like it because it's kind of a "hippie chick" design and I work in a bank so sometimes when I get fed up with the buttoned down world, I think about my tattoo and how that's who "I really am".

Funnily enough, when I was a senior in college, my friends all went to get tattoos but I was too scared so I got my nose pierced instead. So I've been down both roads. :)

This has been some interesting reading.
I have a tattoo of a rose, hidden over my heart in memory of my Nana.
It has one thorn on the stem and the overall tat is very small. She always would tell me to " take the time to smell the roses blooming in your garden, you never know when you will get another chance" So it is a piece of her that I carry with me everyday as a reminder of the simpler things in life that truly mean so much to me. . . and to take the time to enjoy them while I can.

Alee, I totally agree with your point of view!

But along with some piercing comes some responsibility to others. I was recently in a diner and one of the waitresses had a pretty good sized "thingy" through her eyebrow...well, it looked infected, swollen, runny and well, plain disgusting...to me anyway, I really did have a hard time enjoying my food. The manager should have insisted that she cover this while working or stay home. ACTUALLY, SHE HERSELF SHOULD HAVE CHOSEN to cover it up! Yuck! I will never go into that place again.

It has always been a puzzlement to me why people get so emotional about a thing like a tattoo or piercing. Whether you like them or not is irrelevent if they aren't on you. I think that tats and piercings scare some people. I personally don't have any but my kids do. I only have double piercing in my ears and my mother had a fit about that. I got that done at 19 and I am 51 now. When I was a teenager wearing patched jeans and fringed leather or long dresses got the same reaction. I guess things haven't changed as much as I'd hoped they would. I believe the world will be a saner and more peaceful place when we finally reach the place of "no judgement" I do agree with the idea of tats being art. There are some really spectacular tat artists out there and all art needs to be respected. In my opinion, anger is fear and fear is always fear of loss.

Hmm...Corrine--tell your son Hubby and I will be the first ones waiting in line. ;) So many people use tattooes to express themselves just like art. The idea of a specific Christian tattoo artist would be wonderful that way when I go, I don't have to sort through hundreds of pinups or otherwise scary tattooes. ;)
Alee--you are so right, we all do share such a wonderful sistership and its a comfort and a joy to know that though we share different opinions, we can find that common group of love and kindredship with each other. :D

Linda--maybe if we did it in a seperate post for sharing pictures of our tattooes, that way those following this post who don't care for them wouldn't have to sort through the pictures to get to the updates as this thread progresses. I would be up for it. I would love to see others pretties. :)

I think it is great that the choice to use body art or not use body art can be such a powerful decision. Some choices are made by fear or love and I think all women are beautiful no matter what. In the end, it doesn't REALLY matter what is on the skin. It matters what her heart and soul are like. I have seen beautiful tattoos and horrible ones. I have seen women with tattoos all over their faces that were strikingly beautiful, though I would never choose that for myself. In a lot of ways I think it is how you wear it. Just like two identical twins can wear the same outfit and one can look fabulous and the other can look horrible. Part of what comes across is the self confidence and power of the personality behind it (or lack there of in both cases).

Its really neat that we have farmgirls on both sides of this issue and we still love each other as the sisters we are! I love the miracle of this forum that can bring together so many women with so many different ideas and opinions and still show us how we all have that common thread underneath.

Yay, Theresa! As a Christian woman, I find that a lot of others find my tattoo (not to mention my lip piercing) to be heathen or even demonicaly influenced. My oldest son wants to be a Christian tattoo artist when he grows up and I've told him to go for it. I will honestly sit in the chair and be his first customer if he wants.

Tally me up on the "Tattooed Lady" side.

My husband and I went together last year in Hawaii to get our first tattoos. We designed them ourselves and went back and forth with the artists to get them right. I am a Christian stay at home/homeschool mom, too by the way! ;)

My tattoo is on my lower back. There is a cross in the middle, feminine scrollwork and a plumeria flower on each side, the initials of my husband and 3 children above. No color, just black with shading. I wouldn't change it for the world! It represents the core of me!

Tats are fine if you live in California. One of the Government's spending packages allocated 100s of thousands of $$ for tatoo REMOVAL for the people in CA that discovered that their body art was a mistake.

Asfor body piercings, I think it should be against the law for a mother to have their tiny babies ears pierced. The child should be old enough to at least say she wants pierced ears. Our great granddaughter has pierced ears. She was just 6 months old. I told grandson and his wife what I thought about it. They said they did it because she didn't have any hair and wanted to do something so she would look like a girl. Its a wonder they didn't tatoo hair on her head. Look at all the beautiful choices of color.

What really got to me was when my granddaughter (age 20) got her second piercing in her ears and my daughter had to go with her and give her permission. Keep in mind that she could have had an abortion without her mother's permission. Something wrong with that.

This thread reminds me of a story a friend's mom told me a long time ago. She was explaining how her coworker's teenage daughter had those drama masks (comedy and tragedy) tatooed on her behind. Maria (my friend's mom) said, "Can you imagine when you are 90 years old and in the nursing home, and the nurse comes in to wipe your behind, and there are these two faces staring back at her?" Disgusted, she threw up her hands and said, "By then, they will BOTH be tragedy!"

(Reading back on this, it doesn't sound as funny as it did back then. But, I am missing Maria's awesome Greek accent...maybe that made it funnier than it really was.)

Linda,

I agree. The same goes for too many bulging muscles on women who weightlift. A little goes a very long way

I love tattoos. I have 3 and going to get another soon. I can totally respect those who do not like tattoos because everyone sees things differently. I think a tattoo that is tastefully done on a woman is beautiful. I have a long stemmed rose on my left ankle and I love it. I also have a wizard standing on a mountain top holding a crystal ball on my right shoulder blade. There is a unicorn above my left breast too.
The bottom line is that some people love 'em and some people hate 'em. All is good :)

I love tattoos (I have 4 small ones) but too many on a woman doesn't look good. When I see a man with tattoos I always want to look closer at it and ask him about it. I don't ask strangers but I do ask a new friend about his. These days with all the good colors they can look really nice.

When I had my wedding picture taken one of the poses showed my tattoo on my arm. The photographer said "oh no, this shows now". My response was I like my tattoo, so I like it showing.
She assumed that it shouldn't show.

I have had many compliments on the tattoo that shows the most. It's not large but is noticeable on my forearm.

I also saw all over face and neck tattoos on a mother holding her little baby. I know that little babies love their mommy's face and a tattoo would give a baby just a picture to love. But her face was scary to me! LOL

For me there is no void and really, my self esteem is decent. I see this as body art. And as with all art, it is subject to opinion. That's half the fun.

When I see a person who has full sleeve tats and is covered, I sometimes want to approach them and hear the story behind each image. I also think, "boy that's taken a lot of time and money" As an artist, I sure wouldn't have the patience, so hats off to the artists who do this.

It's just something I have always wanted to do...just couldn't find the right image...until last year. So the search and desire is not something that just sprang up recently. And when I found out I could still donate blood (a year later after getting inked) that wasn't so bad.

The Belgian Tervuren dog has been such a huge influence in my life for well over 25 years.

This is my way of paying homage to the first dog that gave the inspiration and saved a friends life, and then the other 2 I personally own. As the years go by, I'll add names. And it is something I do wish to carry with me my whole life.

Stuff like this is what makes us who we are. Otherwise without freedom of expression, it would be pretty boring. Kind of like how working at Disney was where everyone acted, dressed and looked the same.

On the flip side, I do respect the nay sayers. It's indeed very personal and up to the individual.

If I had a child who wanted a tat. The ruleswould have to be...it has to be able to be covered, put it in an area that when you are 90 the sags and bags won't detract (that narrows it down right there!) and of course when you turn 18. If you are old enough to fight and die for me, something as trivial as this shouldn't matter. And lastly, think long and hard about the image you want. Project out 10 years or more. Is this something that will continue to have the same meaning now as it will then?
