Posted - Apr 07 2009 : 1:04:35 PM For the first 20 years we lived on our little slice of heaven everyone around us was toxic. In the way they lived and their lovelessness for their possessions and for their land. Thankfully in the past 10 years, those toxic neighbors are leaving and being replaced with "Tree Huggers", Herbalists and Back to the Land types....which is thrilling me to no end! But those first 20 years, I always said that the birds and bugs and wildlife around here knew a harmonious farm to come to...tada!

gentlewoman farmer |
Posted - Apr 07 2009 : 12:06:20 PM I took mine as a take-off of Gentleman Farmer. Thats what my husband called himself when we lived on 8 1\2 acres and our farming was mostly chopping tumbleweeds. He worked in town. We had gardens, animals, children and tumbleweeds. We lived in our "house" while we built it. When I moved in I was 19 yrs old, the house was framed, no siding, windows, heater or cooler. No roof, when it rained I got wet. I how live on 1/4 acre, and at 67ys old, it keeps me busy.
Be good to yourself and be good to this earth.

Summerstead |
Posted - Aug 25 2008 : 09:55:40 AM About 20 minutes south of Chadron, Nebraska, there's a farm. That farm had been in our family for over 100 years. It was homesteaded by my great-great-great-grandparents. My grandmother was born there, and we used to go visit my great-uncle there twice a year every year when I was growing up. Long story short, my great-uncle made the decision (a very wise, but also extremely difficult and heartbreaking decision) to sell the farm a couple of years ago. We were talking one day about how some people name their farms and about our family's cattle brand. I decided that had it been up to me, I would have named the farm "Summerstead" since people used to refer to it as the Summers' homestead. So, even though the farm was in our family for over 100 years without a name, we now refer to it as Summerstead. And, since I came up with the name, I get to use it for whatever I want!

bboopster |
Posted - Aug 18 2008 : 2:43:18 PM BBoopster is a name that has followed me since my childhood. My name is Betty Jo and everyone tried to throw Betty Boop down my throat. I disliked her because I though of her as a not so bright brunette and a power user. But as years went by she did not irritate me quite so much. I also did find a slight resemblance between us. Dark hair, long legs, ample bust, tiny waist, big attitude (I have green eyes she has blue) and a smile that could usually get me what I wanted from the boys or the men. I know not nice to use my powers over those poor males. But if I could not get what I want from the boys. I got it myself, twice a good and twice as much. Anything they can do I can do better. Doesn't work on my DH never has, never will!

It's unseasonably cool here this time of year. It's cooling off early and I'm loaded down with squash, zucchini, and pumpkins. I found a recipe for zucchini pie the other day that I'm going to try. I'll let you know how it turns out.
Have fun harvesting chickens. I always help my dh on that job. Messy but nothing beats fresh meat in the freezer!

Sorry, I don't want to highjack the thread, but I got all wistful with the whole autumn thing. Right now I have blueberry pies in the freezer with more to be made. I'll make apple pies to freeze as well. Grape jelly, plum jam, blueberry jelly.....and so it begins!

Posted - Aug 18 2008 : 07:35:02 AM Autumn ~ me too! I grew up in the midwest and now live in the Pacific Northwest. Different autumns, that's for sure, but I sure do love the mountains here when the weather changes. And.....it's coming up soon! Already putting pies in the freezer for baking in the winter and I bought some jelly jars last night for canning! The best part of fall for me is putting up the harvest. I feel so wealthy when I look at all the cans in the cupboard and peek in the freezer. Going to help butcher chickens on Wednesday.....getting chickens to take home as payment! Yes!!!!!!!!!!

Posted - Aug 18 2008 : 04:53:21 AM Mine is only my 'freakish' name. Marcelina...seriously, I have only heard of one other person in all of my 42 years with my name. Now, Marcy, I like! But, Marcelina....eeecckkk!! I always wanted a nice, normal name. I always tend to giggle when people read my name, they always look at me as if I have just stepped off of Mars, or some such place, lol. That's if they can even pronounce it. I have heard myself called so many things. I was thiking of changing my name on here though, if it is possible. I really would like something a bit more cute and country.
