For me it's driving too. But I'm getting brave and will go for my driving permit next week. (I think.) Is 56 too old to learn to drive? Actually we lived in Portland, OR before we moved to Tennessee, so I used public transportation, Max, walked or got a ride with my hubby. So I didn't need to drive, there. Out here in the country, I really should. Oh, also I didn't like to climb ladders, (fear of taking my feet off the ground.) But, since my cat had kittens, I'm constantly climbing our ladder to get the kittens out of the trees, or off the shed roof. Or else they meow pitifully until you rescue them. Go figure!

My fear that my writing is not good enough to be published. I've been published in magazines, but I got burned a couple of times on "almost book deals", and so I have this fear that I stink at it. LOL I've been writing since I was 20 years old, and I'm 48, I think it's time to get over this fear.

I hate big spiders, deep water and heights but it's not crippling so I don't worry about it.

cheryl .. i liked the snake pics too. now this is NOT to say that i won't leap higher than a 'kangaroo on crack' if a snake gets too near me or surprizes me .. and mostly cuz' i don't know the difference between poison and not poison .. and i surely am NOT going to stand there long enough to measure the shape of the head to find out! but .. if there is enough distance tween me and IT .. it does not scare me. i haven't seen JAKE THE SNAKE this year so far .. but i'm sure he is livin' under the porch with all his kith and kin .. i am just 'usually' careful where i walk and put my hands in the garden!

gurlfrenz .. always remember that 'buying into your 'fears' that someone is judging you because of how you look .. can be controlled by YOU! what others think of our size, shape, color or clothing, hairstyle, etc. etc. is THEIR BELIEF .. and therefore .. THEIR PROBLEM! do NOT buy into it .. or you give them the victory .. and besides .. i firmly believe that most of those fears are totally unfounded. the few that may 'judge' you that way .. well .. that says a lot more 'negative' about THEM than it does YOU!

you are PERFECT the way you are!!!

The constant challenge of financial security. I'm pretty much content with what we have, I'm just always afraid of 'the big one' crashing down and wiping us out. We aren't rich, we have a very little bit set aside, but any major catastrophe would put us in a tail spin.

I don't have any big "fears" ~ well none that hang on and leave me trying to remember to breathe.

I do have annoying thoughts that flash through my mind. Kind of the "what if" thing going on. Like what if a big truck pulls over in my lane? ~ type of thing. I usually, see this for what it is and who it is from. Then the verse, "No weapon formed against you shall prosper," comes to mind. It helps. And for those of you who worry about others judging you for whatever reason, the second part of that verse says, "and every tongue that rises in judgement, Thou shall condemn." When I have a flash of fear concerning one of my kids or dh, I usually see that as a reminder I need to be praying for them.

My first thought was "spiders", because I'm deathly afraid of them. But, I'm going to go a bit deeper than that.

I'd like to conquer my fear of people judging me based on my size or looks. Family and friends have told me that I have absolutely nothing to worry about, and that anybody who DOES judge me without knowing me personally doesn't matter... but it's still at times an almost paralyzing fear. Do I go into this store knowing that I can't wear the clothes but they have cute accessories? Will I be looked down upon by employees? Will the other customers be snickering behind my back? It really seems silly writing about it now, but I've had panic attacks because of this before.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

for all you SNAKE-LOVERS!! (NOT!!!!!!!!!)

From a friend in west Texas:

I always heard my Dad talk about the Blue Indigo Snakes (Black Racers or Cow Suckers here in KY) he used to know while ranching in the Brackettville/Spofford area before moving to the present ranch in about 1932. He always said, no one bothered them, because they killed and ate rattlesnakes. Of course I thought it was a tall tale, because I never saw one on the present ranch. But while working for the King Ranch down in deep South Texas, I saw several of these snakes. They were big, long and the color of Indigo or Blueing they use to use in dying clothes. Never saw one eat a rattler, but I guess the truth does come out now and then. Enjoy the attached photos. Send to all your friends in South Texas and those who hunt down that way to let them know there are good snakes out there.

Honestly, I really don't think I'm afraid of anything anymore. I used to have all kinds of weird, quirky fears, but I read in the Bible that "Fear is not of God, but of the enemy.." and so I have systematically conquered all my fears.

Life is good when there is no fear, although I DO hear it knocking on my door now and again, but I just refuse to OPEN IT!! I go through life now like Kathy Bates' character, "Evelyn," did tword the end of the movie "Fried Green Tomatoes" --- "TAWANDA!!!!"

I have a bit of a phobia about driving, but I've gotten pretty good at it. Driving a big old car from the 70s, with all it's quirks, has made me much more confident. I was a nervous wreck for years after getting my license, though.

My two big fears are: cancer, and something happening to my husband. I swear, every time he's late coming home I start imagining his funeral.

Driving

Honestly, it's got to be a phobia or something with me. Logically in my mind I know I can do it, and that everything's fine. I have done it, and done just fine. But I still freak out about it nonetheless. I get panicky and lose all sense.

I'm trying to practice on the riding mower, and wouldn't you know it, I ran over a little tree this morning. *shakes head* but at least my reversing is getting better. :)

Speaking in front of people, and I have to do it all the time. You would think by now that I would have gotten over that one by now, but no, I still get a nervous stomach and break out in a sweat.
Other than that, I'm with Jenny- snakes, and like her, I have no intention of changing. I have a very healthy respect for them, but don't come near me with one.

Mm, a couple fears...and one is right up there with Heather's, and one with yours, Frannie.

The first is the fear of being like my mother...she's bi-polar and big into mood swings and guilt trips and crazy episodes. Growing up was interesting to say the least. I fear that every time I act on an emotion I have, that I'm being like her. So basically overcoming that to the point I can be myself emotionally, without the constant worry that I'm being OVER emotional or psycho.

The second fear is that I may loose someone so near and dear to me. Life would be unbearable if that were to happen.

But ya can't live in fear, it really holds you back.

fear of water/boats/bridges
I tried to get over it when I first married my husband by trying to ride in an 18 ft. Boston Whaler in the Bay..but..I started hyperventilating and white knuckling..it took me about 4 hrs to calm down after that.
I then tried to get into a kayak after that and the kayak didn't even leave the very shallow water by the shore before I hit panic mode.
So yeah..somedays I think it would be nice to overcome that and also learn how to swim..but when you nearly drown at age 9 from going under about 3 times before anyone sees you..it really does something to you.
At nearly age 40 I honestly don't think I'll ever overcome this particular thing unless a real miracle takes place.
