has been busy ... jus' wanted to show you the latest 'rag chillun' .. they aren't up for adoption .. headin' for the 'county fair'.

OLIVIA MAE

OLIVIA MAE

It has been discovered that Olivia Mae has a tendency to be .. well .. quite frankly .. a little 'vain' about her bright red hair!
The chile’ simply cannot pass a looking glass without stopping to admire herself.
She is a bit ‘prissy’ and loves hairbows, bright colors and sometimes pinches her cheeks a tad too much to ‘rouge them’ extra bright!

She does have problems with sittin’ still for very long at Sunday-go-to-Meetins ..
and is always quite fidgety during morning and evening prayers.
Despite all this, she is a good learner and will not twitch an inch if she has a book in front of her face.

Quite ‘dramatic .. she will often gather scarves from the Missionary box and feathers from the turkey pen and dress up and delight the other chilluns with poetry and renditions from Little Women, Anne of Green Gables and she is especially fond of anything written by Jane Austen!

HALLEY LOU YA

HALLEY LOU YA

Yes, it's truly true, you know --
dear old granny told me so;
and this very doll (who'd think
that its face was ever pink?
But it was, long time ago!)
was a present sent to her
by the Yankee officer.

It was in the old, days
when King George had funny ways,
interfering with the plans
of us free Americans.
(Or, if not exactly free
at that time, we meant to be!)

Well, my granny's father then
had a farm on Freedom Hill.
Wish we had that farm again,
with the tree on it still!
Such a dear old hollow tree,
overgrown with vines and things --
just the greatest place for swings
and all kinds of jollity!

Granny kept her rag dolls there,
and her kittens, too, she said,
when there was no room to spare
Ii the kitchen. Overhead
there were squirrels chattering
birds that used to build and sing,
grapes of all purple-ripe and sweet,
nuts so nice to crack and eat!

Dear me! I've a doll's house here,
full three stories from the floor-
staircase, hall with chandelier,
double parlors, big front door,
every kind of furniture;
but it isn't half so good
as that playhouse in the wood.

One day, rummaging around
in the hollow, granny found
there was something like a pit
far in at the back of it --
just a sinking of the ground,
I suppose, among the roots,
handy for the nuts and fruits
that the squirrels hid, you see;
"But t'would hide a man," thought she.

So she hurried down the hill,
told her mother what she thought;
and that night, when all was still,
to the hollow tree was brought
meat and drink to feed --
and the man himself, indeed!

T'was a "rebel" officer
(that was what they called us then,
when we fought King George's men),
and to make him prisoner,
as my granny was aware,
men were hunting everywhere.
It was only just that day
Officers had come to say
that whoever hid the man
fed, or helped him on his way,
British or American,
he would have King George to pay!

so it was a risky plan
sor her Granny, don't you see?
British constables and kings
must have been right awful things!
but he wasn't scared - not he!
Neither granny, you would judge,
if next day you'd see her trudge
up the hillside to the tree!

There, with playthings spread about,
acorn cups and saucers set,
kittens running in and out,
she amused herself - and yet
wasn't likely to forget!
Like a pious little maid,
I am sure she watched and prayed,
but was frightened all the same
when at last the soldiers came.

For they did come - oh, of course! -
two afoot and one on horse,
all to catch one Yankee man!
And the biggest one began
(you should see my granny frown
as she tells it) to pull down
all her beautiful green bowers
t'ill they tumbled at her feet -
purple grapes and yellow flowers,
clematis and bittersweet.

Oh, I would have liked to see
that man's face as out she came
flashing eyes and cheeks aflame,
from the hollow of the tree!
And (as if against the cat,
tooth and nail, had sprung the mouse)
"Shame!" she cried, "for doing that -
now you've spoiled my dolly-house!"

How her heart beat in her dread!
but she bravely stood her ground,
and the burly man in red,
casting watchful eyes around,
saw within the hollow tree
just her rag dolls, two or three,
and her kits, a sleepy pair
but, except the pretty child,
not another creature there.
So half sheepishly he smiled,-
having children of his own, -
said a kindly "Never mind!"
turned about, and left behind
kits and dolls and child alone.

How that 'rebel" officer,
under his thick coverlid
of dry leaves so snugly hid,
must have praised and petted her!
Fancy what a grateful kiss
paid the little maid for this
when, the anxious hour past,
she came gaily home at last.

For, as afterward they knew,
there were papers that he bore
worth their weight in gold, and more -
papers planned to serve the State
when its need, they said, was great,
that were only saved to it
by her ready 'mother-wit'.

So, I truly think - don't you!'
that we "Daughters" ought to claim
and be proud of our fine name;
and I hope, if ever need
comes again, that daughters still
may be brave in words and deed
as she was on Freedom Hill.

Emma Anna

Three new dolls sat on three little chairs,
Waiting for her Sixth birthday;
And they wondered, when she saw them,
What the little girl would say.

They hoped that the nursery life was gay;
And they hoped that they would find
The little girl often played with dolls;
And they hoped that she was kind.

Near by sat an old rag doll neatly dressed
in a new frock with apron red;
She smiled at the French dolls ... "As to that,
Don't feel afraid," she said.

The new dolls turned their waxen heads,
And looked with a haughty stare,
As if they never had seen before
That a doll was sitting there.

"Oh, we're not in the least afraid," said one
"We are quite too fine and new;
But perhpas you yourself will find that now
She will scarecely care for you."

The old doll shook her head and smiled;
She smiled, although she knew
Some of her stuffing was gone,
And her cheeks were faded too.

And now it was day; in came the hcild,
And there all gay and bright
Sat three new dolls in little chairs -
It was a lovely sight.

She praised their curls, and noticed too
How finely they were dressed;
But the old rag doll - all the while was held
Clasped close against her breast.

CYNTHIA ANN

Cynthia Ann is my oldest child .. She's not the least bit pretty.
She's made of rag and her clothes are worn .. but she's sweet and good and witty.

My other children (five in all) .. Are made of bisque or china,
Clara Louise and Michael John and Prue and May and Dinah.

But Cynthia Ann is really best .. She's so serene and steady;
When unexpected things occur .. It's Cynthia Ann that's ready.

Just listen to this! One summer night ... The moon was full and round and bright

Into the nursery softly gliding .. A fairy came on a moonbeam riding.
She twinkled with light; her folded wings .. Were the loveliest, softest, gossamer things!

She looked about, and she said: "Dear me! .. What a curious household this must be!
Dolls all rumpled, the doll-house bare .. With upset furniture here and there!

A tea-set broken and blocks about .. and a calico cat with it's eye put out!
This isn't the place for fairy or elf .. I'll fly away from it fast, myself!"

But just as she turned to ride away .. The midnight chimes began to play,
And 'ere they'd got to the stroke of five .. the dolls and animals came alive.

(They always do in the dead of night .. Whenver the moon is round and bright).

Now Clara Lousie and Dinah stood .. As stiff as if they'd been made of wood;
And Michael John and Prue and May .. Just stared and hadn't a word to say.

*You'd think they'd never been brought up right .. And i've taught them manners with all my might!
But Cynthia Ann, she saw at a glance .. The awkward side of each circumstance.

She said to the fairy: "How do you do? .. You've come to call? That is dear of you -
Excuse disorder - one moment, please .. Come, children, clear away all of these!"

And in just a minute the room began ..to look as neat as a nursery can.
The blocks in order, the chairs set right .. The children's dresses all pressed and white.

Before the fairy could say, "Dear me!" ..Cynthia Ann was pouring tea.
While the calico kitten sat close by ..Wth a neat white bandage over its eye!

When the fairy rose at the end to go, .. She said: "My dears, I've enjoyed it so!
Such a lovely house! Such a cozy call! ..Drop in at Fairyland, one and all.
I'm always at home by five each day". ..Then she summoned her moonbeam and rode away.

Perhaps you wonder how I know ..What happened there that night?
Next morning in the nursery all ..Was orderly and bright;

Each toy was in it's proper place ..The children trim and neat.
I loved them all, but Cynthia Ann .. was twice as good and sweet.

I knew these things had come to pass .. While I was tucked in bed,
For Cynthia Ann, she told me all .. And this is what she said:

"I did my very best, you know; ... 'T'was just because I love you so."

"GLORY"

Little GLORY is passionate about her Country!

She refuses to wear anything except 'stars and stripes' in shades of
RED, WHITE and BLUE!

The 'nawth' and the 'south' have just reunited and times have been tough .. Glory is from Kentucky .. and her family did not take sides .. but were always there to feed both the blue and the grey when they tramped through their town. The farm families would take them in and nurse their wounds.

Glory tells of two 'sojurs' who were wounded and both brought to her gran-poppa's farm and had beds side by side whilst they healed.

They had no hate for one t'other .. and could often be heard well into the night talkin' about their homes and their own families.

They discovered they both loved fishin' and farmin' .. and each of them had sisters back-home. GLORY especially loved hearing them tell funny stories of the 'town boys' who would come to 'woo' them!

She listened and learned how each of them had good hearts and she learned that each of them were passionate about their home-states (Gawja and Mary-land is how they each sed their state names.)

Whilst they were in the keepin' and care of the lovin' home of her Grans .. Gen'als Grant and Lee signed a piece of paper whut ended that turrible war an' a coupla' months later, when they were able, they both went off and walked together a fur piece down the road t'il GLORY saw them shake hands and one turn nawth and one turn south.

"This 'sperance' showed me that whilst we kin come from opp'sit sides of the land .. ef'fen we jus' sit down and TALK with re'spek .. lak we wuz' talkin' to someone in our fam'bly .. we kin work out any problems we might have."

Glory still wonders if they ever saw each other again.
