Tonight is the first night I've spent alone, meaning without Seamus, in this old farm house since I moved here ten years ago. Not ONE NIGHT here without her until tonight. Yesterday, I received a call from my dad telling me that my grandmother had passed away - she fell into a coma on Friday and passed away Sunday. She was so much fun and so very kind and interesting - always ready with a papaya or a game of cards. This morning, I put down my oldest and best dog, Seamus. She is/was a golden retriever with an amazing capacity for empathy - and patience enough to let a toddler stick his fingers up her nose. Massive organ failure - she wasn't sick, the vet said it looks more like a poisioning. I don't really care what it was. It's too quiet here. No grandmother in the back of my mind, no dog under my feet. My husband is out of town on business, my oldest is with my parents, and my little one is asleep. Darn if I even know what to do. It's just one of those days - wild in it's own almost surreal way, I guess. We all have them, and it's days like this one that make me refer back to the sayings and admonitions I grew up with, "Out of emotion and into motion," and, "This, too, shall pass."

This is my grandma and me - it's so fuzzy - it's the only one I have on the computer - this is in 2006. She's lovely and fun and kind...

...and this is Seamus; the Good Dog...

XOXO, Libbie

Ahhh Libbie I just read your post and hope you are doing somewhat better and hubbie is back in town. Sorry to hear the passing of your sweet Grandmother and happy that you have such wonderful and fond memories of her to cherish forever. Grandmothers are the best. Your dog sure was a beauty and I am sure loved to pieces! It is not the same when they are not around. I still miss our little dog. Time heals doesn't it? But time sometimes seems to go so slow. Love you and thinking about you sweet Libbie.

Hugs, Maryjane Lee

I'm so sorry for your double loss. I didn't see this at first, so it's news to me. Your grandma sounds like a great lady, and I'm glad you all had such fun during her life.

Libbie, that was a wonderful tribute--thank you for posting the link. I love that (just one) of her passions was jury duty! That made me smile as I'm sure she made you smile. How very proud you must be to come from such a wonderful woman. I also enjoyed reading about your father...what an interesting life!!!

What a lovely tribute to a very special lady! How proud all of you must be of your grandmother! When we lose a pet about the same time as a loved one, I like to think they are helping each other over the Rainbow Bridge. My condolences to you and the family for both losses.

Libby,
I would challenge you to write as much down that comes to you during this time - about your grandma and your pet....I can tell, by reading some of your messages that you are a writer at heart.... they may be a great comfort to you ( as well as others) later....I am such a dog lover.. yet havent gotten another one yet... but there is something about dogs... and for me Grandma's.. that just love without conditions.. and who doesnt need that!!
Libbie Posted - Apr 17 2008 : 9:39:09 PM
Rene - I'm so sorry about Abby. Isn't that strange when we expect to see a pet even though we should know that we won't? I believe I know exactly what you are talking about with Abby - sometimes I really think I catch a glimpse of Seamus out of the corner of my eye sometimes here, and I have to look back to check, even though I KNOW she's gone. It's as if we expect so much to see them and have them around that our minds and souls somehow "see" them. And thank you so much for the words about my Grandma Muriel - I loved her so very much.

Corinne - you are so sweet to check back with me. Grandma Muriel DID live an interesting and full life, and raised in her oldest son the best father a girl could have. I am so lucky... Luck of the Irish, I guess - or luck of the Hawaiian Irish?!?!?!

Jenny - Isn't...geez...WASN'T she an amazing lady? And always a lady. My Dad looks just like her, and so do I (I've always been told). I feel so fortunate to have inhereted a smile that is like hers, I only hope that I have also inhereted the kindness, sparkly eyes and determination to have a good, full life that she had. Thanks so much for reading about her.

XOXO, Libbie

Libby,
Your post spoke to me, as I lost my Abby (miniture schnauzer) a couple of months ago. I still find myself walking into a room and wondering for a sec. where she is..... She was 15 and we had her since she was a little puppy.. SO I know the loss......Funny how they become such a HUGE part of the family... and as for Grandma's..............There are no words for a loss that great. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Thank you so much - you are so very kind - all of you. I wanted to share an article that was published today in the "Honolulu Advertiser" (the newspaper) about my grandmother. Libby,
Gee I ask the other day, WHERE IS LIBBY, then here you are BUT with not such good news. Sorry to hear all this. If I lived closer I would make you a pie and bring it over,of course right after I left you would probably have to throw it out, but its the thought that counts. I still miss my Grandma, she raised me, and I miss her everyday. You know I was only 19 when I lost her, can't believe it was that long ago. How are those sweet little boys of yours? We haven't seen a picture in along time.

Oh Libbie, I am so sorry. To lose two loved ones so close together is awful. You have such a great perspective on this though. I think these times make us hold tighter to those we love and count the blessings we have. Makes me think of that wonderful Steven Curtis Chapman song, "Cinderella" as he talks about dancing with his daughter knowing all too soon she will grow up (or as the song says, "the clock will strike midnight"). I heard an interview with him about that song and he said it is really for all relationships . . . we need to hold tight to those we love while we have them because the days are truly numbered.

God's blessings to you and your family during this time of loss and change.

Hugs & blessings,

Brenda

Libbie, I am so very sorry for your losses. I've found myself telling myself "this too shall pass" quite a bit over the past year or so; it's wonderful that you have those thoughts and words to help you through this time.

Libbie, I'm so sorry. Losing two loved ones at once is a rough blow. I'm sure that neither would want you to be sad and I know how hard it is to just let go of the ones that we have lost. This too shall pass, is a good saying and is true but you are hurting now and sad. Big farmgirl hugs and wishing you solace and peace
