I am thinking along the lines of picking a child or two in my community and adopt in the sense of seeing that child has a birthday gift, a christmas gift and maybe buy some clothes and things children like,during the year, I think this would be a good thing to do what do the rest think Miss WILMA

I just told Wilma about you mentioning Freecycle. She sure does appreciate it. She has several drawers full of little girls clothes that her granddaughters have outgrown.

Another way to find a needy child is through Freecycle. This December I noticed a posting asking for used shirts for a tall 5 year old. My son is an adult so since I had no children's clothing, I decided to buy the little boy a complete new outfit including a winter hoody. The mother came by to pick the bag along with her two boys. The 5 year old was wearing a thin, very worn t-shirt. December is very cold here in Minnesota. I was sorry I didn't know he had a younger brother or I would have bought him an outfit also. The younger boy was better dressed for winter although I could see they were probably hand-me-downs. I raised my kids on my own (my ex husband was not a provider) and I often had two full time jobs but thank God I was able to provide for my kids. |

They told me to g ive them a week and its been over a week so I will contact them again , It has to go thru the parents to hopefully I will find out in a few days

Wilma - I'm getting the details on it this weekend while visiting some folks. It was very successful and a joy to be involved with.
Hannah - When I get the chance, I'll post about the flag story. I may have to tell about a few more good stories on Wilma when she least expects it. teehee.

Thank you Hannah for being a really true friend, I think the same of you, I always thought that when I die I didnt want to have my funeral preached , but I am changing my mind, I am now appointing both of you to do it. And Jessie Cat I am going to get you,Oh you know how much I do love you and really do like the suggestion of the back pack deal, I think that is a good thing for our church to work with to, one of the deacons is a school board member and is great to work with on things like this, cant wait to get the info

Jessica, I am a friend of your Aunt Wilma and you couldn't have said it better: "she IS a blessing in disguise in the community." Her compassion for children is genuine. Wilma reaches out to many people in need and never for the (recognition) only for the need so you will seldom hear what she is doing. And yes, you should definitely share that wonderful, flag story as that is yet another one of her many 'unsung' contributions and this one was for our country. Wilma does not 'do' to get recognized, she 'does' from the heart.
I have known Wilma for quite a long time but with our busy schedules we hardly have time for our friendship...but as time goes on I begin to see just who and what she is, a very special person.

I have been reading about this project of my aunt Wilma. I think it is just a wonderful idea. I know that if any one can make it work, it would be her. She is just a darling with kids. Over the years, she has kept around 13-15 kids. The two that I remember the most were the set of twins in the last set. They lived with her and I grew up alongside with them. They were a little bit older than me and our birthdays were around the same time. One of them is now a nurse and the other works in another department at the same place. I know that growing up on that farm and being under Wilma's wing, it helped them become wonderful people as they grew up.
I know that she never mentions this, but she has gotten a lot of awards from the state and the school system over there in her community. I think she never says anything about these because it isn't about the awards, it is about seeing what a child can do and learn. She has always been humbled by the awards, but is shy about telling others about them. Hopefully she don't mind me mentioning about her work on here. Sometime I'll have to tell you guys the Flag story when I get the chance.
Growing up, I loved spending time with my aunt and uncle. Some of my favorite memories growing up were right there on their farm. She always made sure that we had a good time. I think one of the best gifts she gave me was learning me how to sew and showing kindness towards others.
I honestly believe that if she had one child or a dozen kids dumped on her door step, she would holler "Come on in!" and she would take care of them. And she is a wonderful "Nana" to her two grandkids. My nephews also love being around "Aunt Wilma" and can't wait to see her again.
I think that there isn't a such thing as a needy child, but there is a such thing of a child who wants to be loved. I think the adopt a child project is a really a blessing in disguise for that community down there. I have to say it has made me begin thinking about doing this here.

when the sweet young couple moved in at the top of our hill .. with two DARLING little girls .. i immediately 'adopted' them ..and make sure that every birthday, holiday and season they get gifts .. my favorite 'thing' to give to them is BOOKS .. i am a book-a-holic .. and know that 'reading' i so very important to children and adults ..and i never go out looking for books that i don't think of little krystal and willow ... BUT most of all .. they adore coming to our cabins for a 'tea party' ... they are so precious and affectionate .. i love having kind neighbors .. there are also two dear little town 'boys' that i have taken under my wing and will often stop into their mom's shoppes and drop off some toys that i have gathered.
i have for as long as i can remember .. always had a PRIZE DRAWER .. filled with little gift-wrapped 'treasures' .. trinkets .. toys .. books .. gum .. candies .. art and school supplies .. and everytime children come to my house .. they run for the 'prize drawer' .. it's so cute to watch them 'mull over' the different wrapping papers, the shapes and sizes .. and the weight of the wrapped gifts before carefully choosing a 'prize'. remember to see if your town has an 'angel tree' at holiday time .. and become an 'angel' to several children .. but remember too ..that children have needs all year long. it is so very easy to find 'needy children' .. through your local churches, food banks, schools, and other organizations. and be sure to include your own children in 'adopting' some friends .. but be careful that they know to not make children they give to ... feel embarrassed or hurt by their neediness. (hmmmmmmm .. is that a word??)

Miss Wilma, this is so beautiful, I am on the verge of tears. I think the world shows so little kindness sometimes, and this is such a wonderful idea! You are a blessing, Miss Wilma, and I am sure you and your adopted child will be equally as lucky :)

Bridget thank you for your interest, I am so excited I am waiting now for more info on my child, I am looking forward to just being there when there is a need, and I can tell you there are more of them than is known about,And it is so simple,i am now working on away for the school to give them their snack money and working with a special teacher to let me know when things are needed, you couldnt just give it to the parents because most times they would still be without Now wont it be better for the child to go to the office and say can I have some snack money,And maybe sometimes be able to go on a field trip with them, And get to dress them up,I cant think of any thing else that will give me more pleasure, I worked with a program that was set up to do so much for the children now that was a pk of baloney, The only thing that got done was we got good salarys and the kids got nothing but a few used clothes that the teachers donated to begin with, Didnt mean to talk so much but it was Christmas and I love buying for kids at christmas, There was the prettiest little black boy in first grade . He was a live wire and I loved him so much, So I went and bought him a new guitar a toy one, Well when they all opened there gifts and he got that guitar there was no controlling him I mean He put on a show playing and singing achey breaky heart The principle was trying to stop him no way, She didnt get mad at me though she was really good to work with

That's so true, Miss Wilma. Boone County, the county next to me, is the fastest growing county in the State, both population wise and economically. It's home to Triple Crown Estates, where Congressman live and international corporations. Just before Christmas, the social services found 10 homeless families living below the library landing. They had a tent camp set up--these were folks who lost their homes recently, had school aged children and no where to go. The Social Services Director was shocked...she had never thought of poverty in Boone County. A few days later, a client of ours told me that she took names off the giving tree at her son's elementary--she scoffed and said, "all the names are children at the school...it's the richest school in the district--please--like THEY need money!!!"

There's a song/performance art by Arlo Guthrie that mentions that...."Well, it's sure nice that these folks got a nice, hot meal this Christmas, but what about every other day of the year???!!!!"....I agree with him, and I think you're on the right track, Miss Wilma. We all need to take care of our communities.

We never had anything, but I sure never knew it. My daddy was always loaning "backsiders" from the racetrack money or a car or whatever....I always thought we were as rich as could be--I know now we were  , just not in money.
Miss Wilma, I think this will be SO rewarding for you, and for your lucky child. I can't imagine anyone I'd want as an adopted mentor than you!

Joy we were very poor but we always had food my mama worked like a dog to see we had food I went to school barefoot but every one did, There was just not any money, when I hear people complain how bad things are now I think you dont know what bad is,My motherinlaw always saved for hard times any time she got something new from the kids she would wrap it back up and put it in a drawer, after seeing this for a long time I learned to use it the first time and then she would, one time I bought her some new rubber boots,She looked out the door and caught me wading the mud in them after that they were okay to wear, I rememember her laughing at me

I too remember a time when my family was really struggling. I even remember the year...1975. My dad had broke his leg logging. We had my grandmother at our house with a broken hip. Believe it or not, our church took the youth to a skating party and my sister broke her foot. I remember that my Mom had to take a leave from work and help with my grandma, my dad and sister. Mom and I just about worked ourselves to death. That year at Christmas the church brought us boxes and boxes of food, clothes and gifts. I will never forget that blue leather bilfold that had my name on it. I had that bilfold for about 20 yrs. I will never forget the kindness shown to us. We were a true family in need.

Okay girls in between stripping tobacco today and taking some new pictures in the shop I got to work on my adoption, I have a friend teacher that is helping me find my child or children The plans are I will send a birthday gift for the birthday or days, I will buy Christmas gifts, I will see that they have snack money for school, I will help money wise for special events,I will help with clothing, I will open a small savings account for them and add to it as I can,It will not be spent until they are a senior in high school, Hopefull I can be an influence towards getting them thru school and I know it will bring me much pleasure. My teacher friend asked me to give her a week to find my special child one or two Now I have committed I will see this thru

I will do this after my two children are out of the house. I can barely keep up with them for now.
My my oldest is 17 and I am already trying to imagine life without him when he completes college. It goes way too fast. He was just a little baby last week.
At Christmas, my little one helps me shop for a few toys for tots, and fill a Samarian's Purse shoebox to donate. There have been a few years, I was just shy of being a recipient myself. She also helps me scrounge up some donations to the local food shelf.
She is just like me in that regard and knows no matter how hard our situation is, there is someone always worse off than us that we can help.
I know my tender heart will take a beating, but I know it will be worth it in the long run. I love kids, they are truly great aren't they?
PS-Miss Wilma, I think you have a wonderful idea, and I am sure whatever child you decide to adopt, you will do wonders for them and they will love you like we do here.
