I am thinking along the lines of picking a child or two in my community and adopt in the sense of seeing that child has a birthday gift, a christmas gift and maybe buy some clothes and things children like, during the year, I think this would be a good thing to do what do the rest think Miss WILMA

Miss Wilma, I don't think there is a sweeter way to reach out than to extend yourself to a child. When you do, you not only bless the child but also their family.

This past year had been a difficult time for us and at Christmas this year, a secret santa blessed all three of our boys with some precious gifts. You should have seen the joy on their faces and the older boys were amazed that someone they didn't even know would care about them. That secret santa gave them a gift that will long outlive the physical gift. I believe it was a pivotal moment for our boys and it will forever color how they see the world. It blessed my husband and I as well.

Whatever you do for a child will last forever! It will be gift that (as my boys discovered) will far outlast whatever gift you give.

I think it is a wonderful idea, Miss Wilma. And it makes you all the more precious to me. Sounds exactly like something I would expect you to do!

Hugs,

Blessings, Lea

Lea I worked in the school system and we did a lot for children but I want something more permanent that the children will remember, I have always loved children and work good with them, but I would really like a child that I could do things with and that the whole system didnt have to know about itI guess I will just be an adopted foster mother, but it is really something I want to do.

I remember a Christmas that was very special to us. My family was struggling and Christmas was coming. A nice older couple asked the Priest at our church if there was a family with young children that didn't have much that year and he called my parents and asked them if it would be okay to give the couple our name. This couple called up my parents and set up a date and came to pick us kids up (they had been at the parish for years so my parents had no reason not to trust them). They took us out to eat at Pizza Hut and we were so impressed with getting pizza, breadsticks, AND pop. Then they took us to Wal-mart and let us pick out a few things. I remember picking out a shirt, some shoes, and a doll. I still remember the whole thing and felt so special that night.
You could find a needy family by asking various churches or groups about "adopting" a family. You may also want to think about being a big sister in the Big Brother Big Sister Program. There are so many children out there that need quality time with an adult and it would mean the world to them. I am so proud of you for thinking of this!

back when I was a little girl about age 7 we had several really rough years and my mom went to the Salvation Army to fill out a list for us kids to be able to have Christmas.
(there were 7 of us all total in the family/4 kids... and bring home pay was only $75 a week)anyhow..I remember some of those Christmas gifts that we recieved..it really meant alot to us kids.
In fact after all of these years I still have a wee porcelain doll that someone was kind enough to donate to me.
Yes..those things that you do for a child certainly mean alot.

We do things in our church you know as a groupie thing I just want to be someone a child can depend on when there are special things I can do to make it special for them I really regret that after I left the system I didnt stay in touch with some of them, I have watched of them grow up and they have never forgot me but i could have done more, You know if if every one of us picked one child how many really fine grown ups we could make out of them, This is something I have been thinking a lot about And by crackies I am going to do it will let you know I progress

Miss Wilma believe it or not, I am surrounded by boys. Our homeschool group is almost entirely boys as well. There are just boys everywhere around here. Not a girl to enjoy sewing with me or to ooo and ahhh over my latest doll. Not one! Now I'm feeling sorry for myself. Okay, not really but I am overrun with boys!

You know, Miss Wilma. I was a Big Sister at a group home for disabled girls before I had children. I would visit once each week and just sit and listen to my "little sister's" day. I would bring her little things like a flower or card. She would just light up while I was with her. Her parents had placed her there because they were unable to care for her, and her caretakers told me that my visits were just the highlight of her week. Her name was Beth and I still remember her sweet face.

Whatever you choose to do, I know it will be with a whole heart. I would love to hear of your journey.

Blessings, Lea

Beautiful idea. This is the type of thing that will "give" beyond what you will ever give the child/children.

Miss Wilma, I think that's an excellent way to give of yourself--extent the holiday spirit we all somewhat forget about as we rush into our normal lives again! Lord knows there are probably (sadly) plenty of children in your area that could use some love and kindness.

Do you have any sort of child advocacy group there? I do that through our local court system--it's very rewarding, but sometimes can really butcher my heart.

I will do this after my two children are out of the house. I can barely keep up with them for now.
My my oldest is 17 and I am already trying to imagine life without him when he completes college. It goes way too fast. He was just a little baby last week.

At Christmas, my little one helps me shop for a few toys for tots, and fill a Samarian's Purse shoebox to donate. There have been a few years, I was just shy of being a recipient myself. She also helps me scrounge up some donations to the local food shelf.
She is just like me in that regard and knows no matter how hard our situation is, there is someone always worse off than us that we can help.

I know my tender heart will take a beating, but I know it will be worth it in the long run. I love kids, they are truly great aren't they?

PS-Miss Wilma, I think you have a wonderful idea, and I am sure whatever child you decide to adopt, you will do wonders for them and they will love you like we do here.

Okay girls in between stripping tobacco today and taking some new pictures in the shop I got to work on my adoption, I have a friend teacher that is helping me find my child or children The plans are I will send a birthday gift for the birthday or days, I will buy Christmas gifts, I will see that they have snack money for school, I will help money wise for special events,I will help with clothing, I will open a small savings account for them and add to it as I can,It will not be spent until they are a senior in high school, Hopefull I can be an influence towards getting them thru school and I know it will bring me much pleasure. My teacher friend asked me to give her a week to find my special child one or two Now I have committed I will see this thru

I too remember a time when my family was really struggling. I even remember the year...1975. My dad had broke his leg logging. We had my grandmother at our house with a broken hip. Believe it or not, our church took the youth to a skating party and my sister broke her foot. I remember that my Mom had to take a leave from work and help with my grandma, my dad and sister. Mom and I just about worked ourselves to death. That year at Christmas the church brought us boxes and boxes of food, clothes and gifts. I will never forget that blue leather bilfold that had my name on it. I had that bilfold for about 20 yrs. I will never forget the kindness shown to us. We were a true family in need.

Joy we were very poor but we always had food my mama worked like a dog to see we had food I went to school barefoot but every one did, There was just not any money, when I hear people complain how bad things are now I think you dont know what bad is,My motherinlaw always saved for hard times any time she got something new from the kids she would wrap it back up and put it in a drawer, after seeing this for a long time I learned to use it the first time and then she would, one time I bought her some new rubber boots,She looked out the door and caught me wading the mud in them after that they were okay to wear, I rememember her laughing at me

We never had anything, but I sure never knew it. My daddy was always loaning "backsiders" from the racetrack money or a car or whatever....I always thought we were as rich as could be--I know now we were , just not in money.

Miss Wilma, I think this will be SO rewarding for you, and for your lucky child. I can't imagine anyone I'd want as an adopted mentor than you!

There's a song/performance art by Arlo Guthrie that mentions that...."Well, it's sure nice that these folks got a nice, hot meal this Christmas, but what about every other day of the year???!!!!"....I agree with him, and I think you're on the right track, Miss Wilma. We all need to take care of our communities.
