Posted - Jul 28 2009 : 09:17:19 AM Several years ago a co-worker gave me a cloth bag with white beans in it . . told me to use as "heating pad". I put it away for a long time and then, at some point in time started using it on sore, aching muscles in my back and neck. WOW!!!! I used it so much I finally had to throw it out ("wore out" the beans). But I made a new one . . . I LOVE IT!!!! In my work as a caregiver for a person with a brain injury . . and outside work there are many times when I need that relief! Heat it in the microwave and apply!! Works wonders!!!!

Posted - Aug 22 2010 : 07:01:20 AM Thanks for the reminder on the bags. I will have to zip one up. All this house remodeling has everything aching. As for the mattress pad I am a real fan. I sleep in the loft and without it the bed tends to get cold before the furnace kicks in. I just keep it on low and it keeps me toasty.

Posted - Aug 22 2010 : 05:43:12 AM I made about fifty of these last year filled with flax seed and lavender EO. Everyone loves them. I made pretty covers from Chenille or flannel depending on if the gift was for man or woman. My sister in law who is fighting breast cancer uses hers and my brother's all the time. She is always cold and says these simple gifts are the best gift she has received in years. We use them all the time too. They are cheap and easy to make. I think if you check on Martha Stewart's sight, she has detailed instructions on how to make them. Enjoy N@n in Michigan

Posted - Aug 16 2010 : 01:51:54 AM Suzanne...there is a Lavender Lamb that you can purchase on line and I have thought about buying myself one of those. If I did machine sewing I could make myself one.
I wonder where your mom found the little pig? How fun is that. I am glad you use it! I thought my hubby might make fun of me sleeping with a Lamb or else my dog would take it and think it was for her. LOL

Posted - Aug 15 2010 : 7:04:28 PM Several years ago, my mom bought me a little pig filled with lavender. I think it was to help rest my eyes. I've been using it at night to help me relax and to help my headaches (migraines). I have much better dreams when that little pig pillow is with me. Suzanne |

Posted - Jul 25 2010 : 12:54:35 AM Angie that is an excellent idea. I would have never thought of that but I can see how that would be very comforting at that time of the month. You could probably make those ant sell them.

Posted - Jul 24 2010 : 09:51:12 AM I will put a small piece of flannel with the essential oil on it between the outside cover and the rice bag. That way I can change the scents.
For my girls and their "monthly sufferin' days" I made a rice bag with lavender and chamomile flowers mixed in with the rice. They love it. Often they will put the rice bag on their tummies and then the heating pad over it. Relaxing. Smells good. And its the weight as well as the heat that helps.
Do what you love, love what you do. |

Posted - Jul 24 2010 : 01:15:41 AM I made some from long hiking socks and filled them with rice. I forgot I even had them! Going to get them out because I've been having a lot of aching in upper arms, base of both thumbs, neck and sometimes my ankles. I tell myself, well, you're older and what do you expect?lol. I take a motrin and this helps, too. |

Posted - Jul 23 2010 : 8:55:02 PM I remember one "bed buddy" made with some kind of grain that when warmed in the microwave smelled like just cooked bread. It was very comforting on cold nights. As long as the scent doesn't damage one's clothes or bed linens, I think it would be very special.
Peggy, I'm so glad that the heated mattress pad gives you comfort. Suzanne

Posted - Jul 22 2010 : 3:23:17 PM Darlene...it might Linger with Essential Oils or even Lavender but...it does even from the white navy beans or the rice for a little bit. I just leave the microwave door open and let it air out. You could also use a little vinegar or baking soda or lemon in the micro just to get those remove the stronger smells.
You girls who are care-givers do, do hard work!! You are Amazing!

Posted - Jul 22 2010 : 10:18:15 AM Peggy...I'm concerned about the lingering odor in the micro. What say yea sisters that have used them? Also your mattress pad sounds like a winner. I'll have to tell a friend who has fibro.
CJ...it's hard work what you do. Caregiving although rewarding is sooooooo hard on our bodies. There is always something that hurts. One day it's my back then my shoulder.....you get the picture! We love our patients though, don't we?

Posted - Jul 22 2010 : 09:39:00 AM Darlene...I absolutely think they would sell well at craft fairs. Especially if they were in pretty covers some feminine some masculine. I am not sure about putting essential oils in them. I would use the lavender flower (stems removed of course) but I would think that oils would leak through the fabric and get on people's clothing. Just a thought.

Posted - Jul 22 2010 : 09:22:03 AM Wow, I have made rustic rice bags by filling socks and then microing them. I never thought of adding the oils but now I will make some for gifts with pretty covers and styles. Also ice packs...clever. Better than frozen peas! HeHe! You ladies are good for ME! I think these would sell well at craft fairs...what do you think?

Posted - Jul 21 2010 : 2:33:42 PM I love bean and rice bags and Lavender eye-pillows all wonderful helps! I have Fibromyalgia and I just discovered a more modern convenience that really helps my over-all muscle pain when I am having a fibro-flare. It is an electric mattress pad. Similar to the electric blanket concept but it is underneath you instead of over you. I even turn it on low in the summer if my muscles are killing me from barometric changes. I got mine on Amazon.com for under $40.00 and it has been a life-saver as I get pain all over my body.

Posted - Apr 27 2010 : 7:04:35 PM I have not done it but your rice bags can go in the freezer, also, for a cold pack. I don't know about the beans. I have made several different sizes of rice bags. I make most of them with a cover than can be taken off to wash. I have given several as gifts. For headaches, put one on the back of your neck and on your forehead.

Posted - Apr 18 2010 : 3:12:32 PM Thank you Sharon for the comment on the blog!
I only nuke mine for about 90-seconds-I have never had it burn. When you incorporate the EO just use a smidge--- you don't need much with Lavender Essential oil. It's HEAVENLY!
They are very soothing and kinda cute too!

Posted - Apr 18 2010 : 06:53:20 AM I have a rice bag my mother made and a flax seed bag I made, both work well. I nuke mine for about a minute.
I wonder if you could heat them in a dry crock pot or roaster if you don't have a microwave? Maybe a cookie sheet in the oven? I've never tried it. My massage therapist keeps her hot stones in a roaster on low. Karen

I also like to put epsom salt in my bath when my muscles are sore. It helps with bruises too.
