I own several pairs of garden gloves, some that were lovely gifts, but every time I go out to weed, at some point in the process I end up shedding my gloves so I can feel the dirt better. I end up looking like an urchin all year because my hands never get all the dirt out of them - I try to think of it as a farmgirl accessory:) Today was a good day because I got my hands dirty!
Does anybody else garden barehanded?

I live in Battle Ground WA right outside of Vancouver and I am sick of RAIN. We have been having a
regular sog-fest! I am so ready for something besides liquid sunshine. I want to feel my hands in the nice warm dirt and the sun on my face. arms and legs. As well as see my plants grow rather than swim! LOL

Ooof - tell me about it. I was in California for a food show Tuesday and Wednesday and it was 80 degrees. Got home late Wed. night to hail and woke up to 2 inches of snow Thursday!?! It is now looking like we might get some spring weather, I certainly hope so.

There is nothing like the feel of good, warm, ready to plant dirt! When I have to deal with heavy briars, sap or some nasty weeds(which give painful grass cuts) is the only time you will catch me with gloves. There is a feeling of accomplishment when I come in with my hands in shades of brown dirt and garden green. My garden is literally "hand planted". Good luck to all with their gardens this year!
Alee Posted - May 03 2010 : 06:45:58 AM
I agree, Jennifer! I can't stand having long nails because I prefer to garden barehanded. If I have long nails then the dirt gets caught underneath and that just gives me the shivers.

Isn't it frustrating? I want WARM weather. Speaking of warm weather I need to get a move on. I see nasty weather coming in and I want to work on Saddle training with Tala today, but the Tea Cup dog trials are being held in my indoor arena so I need to get going before it starts snowing! YIKEs!

My fingers permanently have a dirt line around them these days. Yesterday before work I had to use a scrubby pad to get the dirt out of the deeper crevices in my hands! LOL Most of my gardening lately has been seedling herding (LOL) Transplanting to bigger cups so they can keep growing. I can't wait until this last spell of silly weather clears up!

Dirt in my fingernails and toenails...no manicures or pedicures for this farmgirl. There is something about "feeling" the soil that I just love. You never know, it may catch on and the next thing we will see is mud packs for hands and feet at the fancy salons!

Oh yeah! Me too! I will wear gloves with hedge trimming and tree stuff but I love getting my hands in the dirt. I like to make sure the ground is just so and the plants are just so and can feel that so much better barehanded!

Now where are those glove? I never seem to have them on or near me. They just get in the way, make my hands sweat and I too have small hands. When I do have them, they are the child's size large. And what about the shoes? Seems I'm just wandering around the place barefoot then boom, there I am, dirty feet, dirty hands and happy as a clam!

I miss bare footed. Can't do it now, too much chicken poop. The feel of freshly tilled soil is heavenly though

I am a no gloves, no shoes girl in the garden. My husband and my grandmother go crazy when I am gradening becuase I refuse to wear them. I have rubbed off on my kdis so much that I don't think they ever wear shoes :) I have to feel the dirt in my hands to know if it is good or not, and if my feet get hot the rest of me is hot, so here in Texas the shoes come off to keep the body cool.

My hands feel like they can't breathe if I wear gloves. I also try to keep my garden hoed and cleaned so I can go barefooted too. THAT is heavenly!!! My feet are stained all summer, but who cares, it feels soooooo good.
Annab Posted - Apr 29 2010 : 03:33:57 AM
If I'm pulling weeds, it's barehand all the way. I gan't get a decent grip or good handful otherwise. And when it's hot a glove makes it hotter.

I will wear one on my non pruning hand if I'm cutting berry canes.

At work I use fingerless gloves used for rock climbing. Found them at REI. They protect when I need it like for picking up bales of hay and I can still feel keys and kleenex...both of which are used multiple times throughout the day

The only time I wear gloves is around poison ivy....everyone knows when I have started my yard work. I seem to get a swip of the ivy on me everytime. hahah oh well...love the feel and smell of good earth. Barbara

I just got in from a certain amount of barehanded gardening. I got some carrot seeds planted and 6 tomato plants in the ground. They are my testers to see if the others will withstand being out and in the ground all the time. I think they will be fine. If I have to I'll stick stakes in the ground and throw a sheet over their section of the garden. They should start growing like weeds now though! I love growing things from seed!

I wish I could barefoot garden but I am reclaiming some of the yard as garden space and I am constantly unearthing rusty nails and broken glass. Though much less than I used to. Still, I think I am a bit far off from being able to barefoot garden :(
