Posted - Feb 05 2010 : 11:36:07 AM I am feeling a littl under the weather, so last night after work I curled up on the sofa with some hot tea and thumbed through the Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Catolog. I was really excited when I saw that Fellow farmgirl Emilee Gettle and her hubby Jere have opened a new location in CA. With a 1920's theme and the building looks like an old bank... "seed bank" so cute.
This past week I have become Pen pals (Of sorts) with an older gentleman who reads my blog (www.maryjanesfarm.org/RFBlog), he is in Panama with the Peace Corp~ teaching folks how to organic garden.
Even when I am not feeling 100% I am so greatful that there are so many brilliant people around me that spur me on...
As I scanned through the seed catalog I saw this little yellow box on the page opposite to the front flap.. called Seeds for Peace... in 2009 Baker Creek gave $50.000 worth of new heirloom seeds (in addition to old seeds) to charity. The goal this year is $100,000.. all to non-profits.... and all "We" have to do to support their goal is to place an order..... I really love that!
If you haven't already recieved one of their catalogs you should order one... www.rareseeds.com

Posted - Feb 21 2010 : 5:09:19 PM I got a catalog from them last year and figured that I'd be on a mailing list for this spring too...I guess I'll have to drop over there and order a new one. I love dreaming about a garden grown from their seeds!

Posted - Feb 10 2010 : 1:52:18 PM Yikes! Thanks Rene' for the heads up! I am not the best gardener by any means, so it will be interesting! I figure though that the seeds don't cost much, and this year is going to be an experimental year as I have never gardened with heirloom seeds before.... my dad had always been an avid gardener, until he moved to a gated community where he can't garden, but he will help me I'm sure! I just got Lynn's book out of the library, just this afternoon! I got it to read for the Heirlooms Forever merit badge, and have been looking it over, now I want to buy it for myself it looks so good! I will be journaling my garden this year, so will definitely let you all know how it turns out!

Posted - Feb 10 2010 : 11:13:40 AM Brenda, I am really anxious to see how your tomatoes do.. growing by seed. I had the most beautiful plants but some of them didnt produce fruit... When we had the honor of visiting with Lynn Coulter author of "Heirloom Seeds" last year.. She warned us that growing Heirloom Tomatoes by seed is tricky....I didnt struggle with all the varieties just some.. Anyway, I can't wait to hear how you do and what you did for a bountiful harvest...

Posted - Feb 10 2010 : 08:26:55 AM Must be nice! I have ordered from them several years in a row, and didn't get a catalog this year. I even requested one before Christmas....still haven't gotten it. Looks like I'll be ordering from seed savers or another company.

Posted - Feb 06 2010 : 5:34:29 PM I got my seeds from Bakers Creek!!! They just came today! Tomatoes- 3 different kinds, lettuce mix, beans, peas, 3 different squashes, melon, watermelon, radishes, popcorn, cumcumbers, basil, pumpkins, and a free packet of carrots! Love their envelopes, each one has a quote on it... and clear directions on the back. I will be saving seeds for sure, but anytime I need to order it will be from them! :) I forgot to say, I decided to order from them because of who they are and what they believe in... but my husband saw their catalog and their sweet little girl and said "I'm buying my seeds from that little girl"!
