My husband planted several okra plants. The stalks which are usually high or not growing high. We are getting okra. I've been watering, weeding, etc... Any idea why the plants are not growing high? Thanks for any advice.

The okra plant will continue to grow all season. When I first start picking mine, I have to bend over to cut them. By the end of summer, I am reaching up to cut them. They'll grow!!

yes you have to pick them often, when they get to 3 - 4 inches. if you let them get much bigger than that they tend to get too fibrous, and it will slow down the production of new pods.
love okra too.

Hi Jenny:
We love okra. I cut them up and parch them to freeze for winter gumbo's. So good! My plants are not producing that much. But Tina mentioned that I had to pick them often, which we are not doing. So, every day I pick, pick, pick.

I have ended up with short ones before too...and they do produce well. I wish I had okra going this year. Our growing season is a little too short and I would have needed them going well by now already...sigh. I LOVE okra!

Thank you Tina. That must be what we have; dwarf varieties of okra. And, I did not know that okra is related to the hibiscus flower. When the okra flower, it does kind of look like the hibiscus. I hope I am making sense! LOL Thanks for the information.

there are actually dwarf varieties of okra so you may have wound up with one of those. I have a dwarf variety in my etsy shop that does not grow as tall as the other okra. if you are getting okra pods from it then that's great. make sure you keep them picked to keep the plant producing.pick the pods when they are about 3- 4 inches long. also as a little fun fact..the okra is actually related to the hibiscus flower.
