Have you all started planting yet? I have started planting indoors. It is too wet here to plant outdoors.
What are you all putting in your garden this year?

I tend to live a little dangerously in my garden and plant out a little earlier than generally advised for CO,I popped my tomato and eggplant seedlings in the ground several weeks ago and just kept some old tires and insulating blankets handy in case the weather got cold on us.
I've got tons of beans and squash coming up,I am currently enjoying a great harvest of baby and mesclun greens and my seedbeds of broccoli,cabbages and my culinary and medicinal herbs are coming along well.
As far as varieties,I plant all heirlooms so I have Brandywine and Amish Paste tomatoes,Blue Hubbard Squash,Galueax De'Eysine and Blue Hubbard Winter Squash,Rosa Bianca and Ping Tung Eggplant and mixed cabbages,including a loose-leafed cabbage called portugese kale which is wonderful!
I learned to garden from my father and since have always been a more practical minded gardener and not planted alot of flowers and other ornamentals but this year I've fallen in love with scented geraniums and lemon verbena and even put in a few perennial flowers,just for scent and looks and I'm finding I rather enjoy the "fluffery" that my father used to always complain about in women's gardens!!!
Happydaze,I'm sorry to hear of your rabbitry tragedy,your bunny garden is a sweet way to remember them!!

Oh everyone's gardens sound wonderful!
The end of the month is planting time for us. We will be planting:
~Several varieties of tomatoes
~Banana Peppers
~Chinese Red Meat Radish
~Swiss Chard
~Red Malabar Spinach
~Detroit Beets
~Delicata Squash
~Israel Melons
~Cinderella Pumpkins
~Kentucky Wonder Beans
~Snow Peas
~Dragon Carrots
and different herbs too!
I think I bit off more than I can chew (ha! no pun intended :)) when I purchased seeds ::)

Oh Here in Northern Michigan its just almost time to plant. Of course I cant wait so I put in a Rabbit Memorial Garden on the location where my rabbitry burned down in Feb. Put in carrots, radish, and beets. then over seeded with wild flowers..should look pretty.and I feel like I've done somthing for the bunnies that burned. The fire was an accident, but I was the one who made the mistake that started it. live learn and make amends when you can |

I have mostly been transplanting perennials and ground covers. I bought a couple lavender plants the other day, and tucked them in one of the front beds. Still kind of iffy to plant veggies. We usually get a hard frost the first week of June. I did plant some potatoes in hay yesterday, that is my experiment this year. The black flies are out full force now, I have to go buy more stinky cigars....gardens, they are so great.

We planted tomatoes, cucumbers, potatoes, and several kinds of pepper plants.We are getting peaches off of our peach tree, and have begun harvesting bell peppers which I used in fajitas yesterday! I also have a Meyer lemon tree which is putting on a lot of buds this year so I'm looking forward to that harvest!
Our big challenge is keeping the birds and squirrels from getting to the fruits and veggies before we do!

Everything seems to be coming up that I planted in the veggie garden, still kinda waiting on the carrots - I think I can see some sprouts but they are so small I will just have to wait. Already started doing the first pull on the Rhubarb. The lettuce I planted back in February in the cold frame is now being harvested. My artichoke plant survived the cold winter and looks to be doing well. This weekend we are suppose to have up to 86 degree weather, the tomatoes will love that. Weeds are doing well also in the perennial flower bed. That is my chore this next weekend, weeding.

Wow, Tammy. Ya'll must be dry up there. My gardens are being covered up with rain water again. I guess one day we will dry out enough to plant more. Enjoy it while you can.

Yesterday we added a truck load of "seasoned" mulch :) then worked it in well. Later we planted: several heirloom tomatoes, some big beef and roma tomatoes, green peppers, sweet peppers, carrots, lettuce, spinach, 2 types of green beans, corn, crook neck squash, zuchinni, winter squash, cabbage, cucumbers, muskmelons, watermelons, pumpkins and onions. We would like to add to our herbs also.

Its been cold here too, however I have planted more red and golden rasberries, potatoes and onions. This last weekend, in between thunder storms , I planted 5 tomato plants. The ones I started by seed myself are still too young to be placed out even with the milk cartons over them. I have lots of seeds that were started indoors, but its futile to put them out as its just too cold....

I'm so sorry about your budgies. This is going to sound crazy, Belle, but I have 4 in my living room and my son has 4 in his bedroom. I love them. Three are finger trained and I'm working with the others. My sweetest one is my "shadow" he lets me feed him banannas and has learned to whistle. I believe he's trying to talk. He loves attention and even gives me "kisses" I don't know what I would do if I didn't hear them in the background any more. My neighborhood has a few ferrel cats and I've seen them in front of my son's window, looking about in a frenzy trying to figure out where the birds were. I've noticed human passer-byes doing the same. Can be somewhat amusing. |

The Shrip Plant sounds really neat. That is so cool about the Kangaroo Plant. That is nice that you keep Parakeet safe plant in the house.
I love parakeet. I have had a few in my lifetime but they all died. How many do you have?

Tracy-I haven't learned how to post pictures yet, I really need to work on that. Shrimp plants are so much fun and they're easy. They're zoned for 9-11. The flowers form in bracts that actually look like shrimp. I have the reddish/pink kind and just germinated some blue ones. Now I'll have to try to find the yellow. They're said to do well in morning sun with afternoon shade but most of mine are in part shade and do fine-Florida heat can be unforgiving.
Belle- the kangaroo vine is a total experiment. I bought the seeds online for my parakeets (budgies). I try to keep the houseplants safe for them in case they may take a nibble and read about making a "tree house" for them by vining the kangaroo vine over some branches with some toys. So, I hope it works out ok. Alot of my plants have been started by ebay seeds or recieved from free craigslist ads and cuttings from friends. Some of it is established and some things I'm still waiting on. Maybe by the time everything is going good I'll figure out the photo posting process.
I feel so bad for you, Sue. Are you already moved or can you take some cuttings from some things with you? It's probably too late to lift bulbs. Good luck with the gardening plans on the new property-I'll bet it's going to be gorgeous! |

It's too early here to plant outside. The snow finally melted the rest of the way just this last weekend. My blueberries haven't started to show signs of life yet but the raspberries look like they are getting ready to start leafing out. I have lot's of tomatoes started under lights and am getting ready to put them from the ponies into pots - all 100 of them. I have two kinds of lettuce growing in pots and baby bok choy and chinese mustard that I have been eating on thanks to my friend who gifted them to me from her greenhouse. I have lots of flowers started in flats that are ready to pot up as well. I will be planting when it's warm enough: 3 kinds of lettuce, chard, cucumbers (2 varieties), tomatoes (4 varieties), carrots, pole beans, beets and of course radishes for my son who loves them. I noticed this morning that my strawberries are coming alive. I planted a new bed last spring - 120 plants. Hopefully they do well. I usually plant more in the garden but we are going to be having a wedding here the beginning of Sept. so I won't have as much time for canning and freezing as I usually do.

We're still a month from the official "last frost" date here. But the tomatoes and peppers I planted last weekend are sprouting in their indoor pots. And I did scatter a seed mix in a bare spot behind my garage...they were a party favor at a relative's anniversary party two years ago, so what's to lose? If they come up, they will be daisies and love-in-a-mist.
I've mostly been moving perennials that are coming up outside to better spots so far. |

Yesterday I planted peas, broccoli, romanesco, kohlrabi, cauliflower, and brussel sprouts before I had to leave for a meeting. Today will be swiss chard, lettuce, onions, radishes, and cabbage. The tomatos and peppers are patiently waiting in the greenhouse. There are 30 lbs of potatos waiting on my counter to go into the ground this weekend. Everything else has to wait for the last frost to pass.

My onions and lettuce are coming up outside! I planted them a week ago and we've had a real roller coaster ride with our weather here, so I'm very happy they came up. My basement stuff, organic tomatoes, peppers, herbs, etc. are doing quite well and getting rather large on me. I sure hope we warm up, I don't have enough room under the basement lights to put them in larger containers!

I have 30 organic tomato plants, pumpkins, a variety of medicinal herbs all starting inside the house from seed. There are 8 raised beds and 5 fruit trees on one side of the backyard with a overwhelming amount of growth. Annuals from last year need cleared out, perennials trimmed, etc. Follow the process on my blog.

i have to say, this particular topic is a little depressing to me...over the years i've planted so many flower bulbs and last fall i planted over 100 more....especially beautiful iris (purple with pale yellow spots on them). well i guess they helped to sell the house! we will be moving over the summer, soooooo i'll be losing my beautiful iris and we really can't plant anything this summer cause we'll be under construction and way too busy. i guess the good news is that i'll be able to play again next year... and on a lot more land....... enjoy your crops ladies!! |

All of the daffodils and tulips are blooming here, too! They are very beautiful.
My peonies are also coming up. My butterfly bushes haven't started to come up yet.
