| Wow, that's so neat! Cooking outside was known as a barbecue back then for the upper class and you didn't have a deck for eating on you had a patio. That's a word I never hear anymore. |

I don't remember!
Interesting that deck and patio changed, Denise -- I still use patio more frequently. I thought it was a catchall for outdoor entertaining space that is a ground-level/poured cement or paved situation. I thought decks were an above ground wood or similar? Now I'm learning from Hawaiians patios can also be called lanai? |

| I have always called our back patio a patio. But, I'm with you Christine, we have a cement patio... upper deck upstairs. Funny how the material used for a structure can dictate the name we give it. I still remind my boys, no elbows on table, no hats either. No phones allowed. Not even hubs. Dinner is sacred time, sometimes the only time during the day we can all connect, even for an hour. My boys are older now, everyone seems to have their own schedule. So, when a family dinner happens, my heart is overjoyed. |

| Well that was my mistake. Out here no one calls it a patio even if it's cement I guess. Yes Hawaiians call it a lanai. We learned so much over there it was like a different country. Lol. The 50s were before my time but my parents always talked like everything was in the 50s. They didn't take change easily lol |

| It’s so funny how different regions use the same words!! :). When I think of a deck, it’s normally made of wood and up off of the ground. A patio to me is cement, and on the ground level. Lol |

| Another non-sequitur OH question for Denise-- one of my MIL from Ohio came over to help with trick or treating last night and she says in the good ol' days, they didn't trick or treat on Halloween, they had something called "Beggar's Night" they scheduled for a week night. Also, no 4th of July Fireworks, instead something called Red White and Boom on an adjacent more convenient day... Is that still true and observed everywhere in Ohio or is she from some sort of Ohioan Twilight Zone? |

I just heard someone talking yesterday about it used to be called beggars night but they definitely have 4th of July. We haven't always lived in ohio so maybe it was that way at some point. Maybe Heather would know more about these.
When growing up in NY the night before Halloween was known as Cabbage night or mischief night. |

*Why* no elbows on the table? That keeps coming up from the backseat of the car lately. Google thinks the medieval trestle tables would tip if leaned on. Then it had to do with not looking aggressive, disinterested or encroaching on neighbor's space, kind of like the whole concern about manspreading on mass transit. Or messing up your clothes, which I am afraid to mention as a reason lest our house turn into a clothes-optional resort (again). Interesting. I have lost the battle with phones unless anyone has ideas about how to turn that ship around?
Cabbage night in intriguing. Same MIL said a prankster in PA started offering kids the option of a potato or candy and almost half went with the spud, so now he's got to keep that going. I wonder if a cabbage would be as popular. |

I'm not sure I'll be much help - my time has been spent between Ohio and Michigan. I always did trick or treating not beggars night, but the day sometimes fluctuated depending on the town. Also, there's always been fireworks on the 4th of July that I know of.
I remember as a kid Grandma would say "sit up straight and get your elbows off the table." Maybe it had something to do with slouching. Or maybe it was just something that parents passed on because they had to endure it as kids? LOL!
I think I could handle the 50's list, except for the yogurt! We eat a lot of yogurt!!!!! |
