I can hardly believe I am writing November. But here we are!
I hope each of you have a month full of blessings and much to be grateful for this month.

Hola from Portugal! We are on our way to another winery. Ed and I are not Big drinkers of wine, but we have been trained early by the others on the trip to always accept the glass of wine because someone will drink it.

We had a walking tour of Evora This morning. Portugal has so many sweets, pastries, and other goodies that we definitely need to go back on our diet when we get home.

When the last warmth of Indian Summer has faded away, and bleak fall winds drive scudding grey clouds across the sky, Fall is on the wane. Barns are made snug.

Late harvested apples, nuts, and vegetable are securely tucked into boxes, baskets, and bins; cellars, storerooms, and pantries are full. Winter is secure.

Safe from wind and weather, homefolk settled down before a roaring fire, rest after the season's labor; and rejoice over the earth's bountiful gifts. Nature's circle had come full around.

I would say that here in Portugal and Spain, the weather has been on the verge of fall. The last two nights we spent in a former convent, which housed both monks and nuns at one time, and it was built on top of Roman ruins.

Today’s bus trip took us from Portugal to Spain. For the next two nights, we are staying in a Paradores, a castle. This has been a fun trip and we are having a very good time. Sorry I can’t keep in touch as much.

Ed is posting pictures on Facebook if you’d like to keep up with us.

Linda, it sounds like you are having a fantastic time in Portugal! Enjoy all these special times and a bit of ancient history too.

Denise, I love this post you did on November 2 with the sweet art to go with it. November can really be that mont that the weather brings everyone back indoors to settle into new routines. I would welcome some of that weather down here! It is in the mid 80s every day. We just can't seem to shake off Summer.

I'm feeling slightly cheated. October was part summer, part fall. November is being winter; had to put the wool blanket on the bed already.

In November, the smell of food is different. It is an orange smell. A squash and pumpkin smell. It tastes like cinnamon and can fill up a house in the morning, can pull everyone from bed in a fog. Food is better in November than any other time of the year.

Last week, I got to go with a friend to Virginia to see Williamsburg, Yorktown and Monticello. It was the peak season for colored leaves everywhere and I was so excited to be in a real fall setting for 5 days!! It was warm , up to 80 degrees two days but the evenings were cool and no rain so I can't complain!! It was fun, beautiful and wonderful to be back in my home state again to enjoy Fall!!

Winnie,
So happy you were able to do that. We spent this weekend back home in upstate NY. The leaves were past peak but still so beautiful. I get so homesick and want to stay but of course it can only be a visit. We had opportunity for some of the cousins to get together. It was a wonderful time of connecting again. We have a very large family on my dad's side and it would be so fun to do a reunion sometime. I enjoyed every minute of our time there.

Thanks Denise, We had a wonderful trip and enjoyed every minute. I think reconnecting with family is important and I totally understand how going home makes one terribly homesick when one has to leave. I am glad you had a wonderful weekend back to your home and maybe that family reunion could happen next summer or fall.

I'm with you Denise -- I'm hanging on to fall until December 21st; I'm in no hurry for winter.

Judith, I agree with you and hang on to Fall well into December because I love that season so much. And here in Florida, what little fall we have doesn't happen until December and into January. This morning as I was going on my walk, so many homes have already put up their Christmas trees and decorated their doors and yards! Say what?? To me, it feels like Thanksgiving day and has been willowed down in importance. Last year when I was in Ace Hardware about this time getting something, the person helping me and I got into a discussion of the rush to Christmas. He told me that their his does't not celebrate Thanksgiving anymore because his wife likes to go shopping for deals with her friends and they just grab some burgers or something when they get hungry . He told me he really missed the old days when all the family gathered a someone's house , brought food favorites to share, and spent time together visiting and eating a big meal together. The rush to Christmas becomes the big holiday ,and commercialism has robbed many from what used to be an important holiday with family and friends.

I gave up on Christmas years ago due to all the commercialism. I don't like it shoved down my throat the day after Halloween or even before. It's a one day holiday, not a whole season of its own. Yes -- we are losing Thanksgiving because of it, shopping has become more popular than a nice family dinner to express our thankfulness at the good things our lives have brought.
