I've had a couple "projects" on my things I'd like to try to-do list and I finally got them started so I thought I'd see if any other Wildflowers have ever tried these before.

Homemade Vanilla Extract - I received little bottles and vanilla beans for Christmas so I started a batch of vanilla extract this week. I had beans from Madagascar and Mexico so I made some with bourbon and some with vodka. I have read several different recipes - but I think that I'll let them infuse for a year. Seems like a long time but it will be fun to see how they turn out.

Gin-soaked Golden Raisins - This is supposed to be good for arthritis and I can remember my dad trying it for my mom (although I don't remember if they helped - and he can't either). I struggle with arthritis so I thought I'd give it a try.

Fire Cider - one of the farmers at our local Farmer's Market sells some lovely Comfrey Salve that is really great. At Christmas I bought a fire cider starter from them. It was a jar filled with dehydrated ingredients. I added some apple cider vinegar and after a month, strained it and topped if off with more vinegar and some honey. I put the strained ingredients into small muffin cups and froze them to add to soups, sauces, etc.

Have any of you tried any of these?

Fire cider is the BEST!!!! All I can find around here is the commercial kind. I wish I could find a local or at least less commercial source. I would love to try making my own, but the ingredient list is so long! Haha!

I have and do make my own vanilla from Vanilla Beans, I did leave it sit for a year in a dark cabinet and every month I shook it. It is so worth it and a fabulous taste and it last a good long time.
I have never tried the other two but I would be interested in knowing Laura how the Comfrey Salve worked.
Should be able to earn a badge with these homemade ideas you have made up.

I have not heard of fire cider! It sounds interesting and I’m sure that all of these are badge worthy!

I make my own vanilla - although the first batch I only let sit for 6 months. Now I have enough on hand that it can sit for a year! I haven't heard of the raisins. And fire cider is on my list of things to try. I haven't figured out if I have any comfrey around here yet so I didn't make that salve but I did make some salves for Christmas gifts and I plan to start the herb thread up again real soon. I'll tell you about them there.

Fire cider is supposed to be a boost to the immune system - seems like a lot of people use it especially during the fall/winter (cold/flu season).

They recommend taking a shot/tablespoon a day. I have also seen folks - adding it to salad dressing.

I'll keep y'all posted :)

I wonder if shot of Fire ball Whiskey could have the same affect in boosting the immune system? Just saying:-)

Debbie F, if Fireball was effective, I’d be happy! lol.. it’s the only thing I can take a shot of. lol. I’m a light weight!

I’ve heard that the comfrey salve is amazing with its healing properties. I would love to try some. I’ve made vanilla before and gave some as gifts last Christmas. It’s so yummy!

I love Fire Cider! I make it every year. I actually took my beginner herbal training courses with Rosemary Gladstar - the "founder" of the recipe :) I also make my own vanilla - have for quite a long time as well. So much cheaper - and better! - than the store bought.

That does sound like a great class.

The comfrey salve and the fire cider tonic kit are from Elemental Farms - I think they have an etsy shop.

The comfrey salve has comfrey, arnica, olive oil, ginger and beeswax in it. I initially bought it for my joints but we've discovered that it's great on burns and skin issues. It's great for so many things!

The ingredients in the fire cider tonic include turmeric, garlic, ginger, horseradish, lemons, jalapeno, rosemary and black pepper. They were all dehydrated so I just added apple cider vinegar to cover it. Pretty simple. I had my first tablespoon today - definitely had a little bite to it :)
