Here we are at the beginning of a new year. A chance to start a new year, new month and new day. May we make each day count for good in this year. I don't make resolutions but I do have goals that I would like to accomplish. I hope each of you have something that you desire to accomplish this year.

Happy New Year everyone! I hope this new year will be full of love and good health. For me, starting a new year always feels like a fresh start to the unknown, something like starting a new school year. There will be surprises, growth in skills, new friends, and losses. However, when I look back over 2023, it was a blessing on many levels and I am grateful for all the love, support, and fun I found along the way. I look forward to hearing about what all of my HenHouse sisters discover and share along the next 12 months.
Don't you just love that new spiral booklet with all clean pages just ready for you to use however you feel motivated to do? What a gift a blank slate can look like on a January 1 of the new year!

Yes Winnie I agree! I love the newness. It's sort of funny when you think about it, it's really the dawn of another day but we make it new with our attitudes and outlook. Marking this day as the start.

We woke to a bit of snow! It is not much and will probably be gone soon but I love seeing it. It started on the way to the annual new years party we attended. Took down the tree and getting Christmas put away. Leaving out my snowmen.

I woke with lots of energy. Lots to use it for today

Winnie and Denise -

You said it beautifully. We woke up to a clean slate for 2024 and can start anew. We will have new adventures and new projects and new opportunities for creativity and for renewing and starting new friendships.

I spent the morning putting away Christmas and the afternoon cleaning and straightening my craft area. Starting with a clean craft always inspires me to work on something.

Red barns have always been a favorite of mine along with old red trucks. Something about red that makes them special to me.

Got my Christmas put away and now trying to get caught up on some mail and check off my old to do lists.

Getting ready for our upcoming vacation trip. Have started laying out clothes to make sure we have all we need but not too much extra. We are trying to decide how much luggage to take. We both have backpack carry-ons and need to see what else we need to take. Several of the places we are going are known for their different types/methods of making batik fabrics, and I know I will be bringing some back with me. LOL! Not sure if we will each take a checked back or just take one.

I noticed that some of our Henhouse gals earned merit badges in 2023: Congratulations to Andrea, Cindy, Karen, and Sherry. I have earned a few Merit badges over the years, but none for quite a while.

Aww, Denise, it so pretty. It’s supposed to get very cold this coming week. So, again, no snow…it would be freezing rain if anything. :)

Denise, I miss waking up to snow on my porch!! Snow in January is something I always hoped for when I was a kid. A good snow meant a no school day and a chance to grab our sleds and spend the day going down this incredible hill of our neighbor who was fine with all the kids enjoying themselves.

Winnie,
My grandkids go back tomorrow from their winter break. They were hoping for more snow to extend it but I doubt their mom was wanting that. Lol.

We have had a doozy of a bad storm this afternoon as a cold front pushed down on a warm temperatures that have been around the past few days. Whew! It was one doozy of a storm too with over 3 inches of rain and gale force winds and tornado watches. Everything now seems calm again except for some distant thunder. I would take a snowy day any time rather than all this drama here in Florida!

We've had high winds all day, too. Supposed to get lower nighttime temps and this weekend and much of next week lows will be in high teens and low 20s. With highs in only the 30s-40s. UGH! And possible wintry mix.

We leave for vacay in 12 days. Just got visas today - I ws worried since we hadn't gotten them yet and sent them 50 days ago.

We've heard from our Vietnamese Tour Leader via email so far. He's going to call us on Sunday to answer any more questions.

A friend just posted this on FB and it is so funny - and so true! LOL! Hope you can laugh along with us.

** Public service announcement **

If you are new to Texas, we are about to experience “Texas Winter”. This is six or seven days of cold, maybe some ice and snow.

The threat of snow (or ice) from your trusty local weather advisor is your prompt to head to the grocery store and buy milk, eggs, and bread. It doesn’t matter if you need these items. It’s just what we do. Everyone in town will be there, so be prepared.

You’ll also need to make a mad dash for faucet covers and finding them and getting out of the store will be like The Hunger Games.

Don’t look for a sled. You won’t find one. In the rare scenario that we get enough ice or snow to sled, grab some cardboard, a plastic laundry basket, or a trash can lid and go find the nearest hill. Yes, we know it’s not a hill. You live in the flatland, just go with it. You’ll be alarmed by the fact that you’re “sledding” towards a bar ditch, fence or maybe into a farm to market road.
Just go with it.
You’ll be fine.

We don’t have equipment to handle the winter and weather. The roads will be a mess and even though the state has been telling you for a week they’re ready, they’re not and it won’t work. Just stay home if you can and if you can’t just come to terms with the fact that nobody here knows how to drive in snow or ice.

If you happen to slide off the road or get stuck, turn your flashers on, take a deep breath and wait. Two guys in a four wheel drive truck will be along in no time to offer assistance. Don’t try to help them, they live for this stuff, and will do what they can to get you back on the road. If either one of them screams “hey, y’all watch this!” just get your phone out and start recording. You'll probably end up with a viral video.

Also of note, when they offer you beer and deer sticks, don’t be rude, take them and smile.
No matter what you do, don’t talk about how they did it back home in any of these scenarios.
Nobody cares.
You live in Texas now.

Texans know they live in the greatest state in the country and this is how we do things.
When we act like we’re going to die and start to complain about the 7 days of winter - just shut up, we’re serious and we don’t care how much you love it.
We don’t.

You’ll be back in shorts and flip flops in a week to ten days and it’ll be nice until right around Easter.

Texas “second winter” will be 2 or 3 days and will hit right around Easter, usually the week before or the week after. This will hit right around the time you plant flowers and a garden.

We know you’re not from around here when we see you’ve planted flowers before Easter and before the “second winter” has hit.

During second winter it’ll go from 70 to 25 and you’ll experience all four seasons in one day.

This too shall pass, get used to it, and when second winter is over you can enjoy the 3-4 weeks of “spring” before summer gets here and then it’ll be melt your face off hot until sometime around Halloween.
