I went strawberry picking today. We came home with 5 buckets - I'm going to be busy the next couple days LOL! Is any one else picking berries yet?

We tried to grow strawberries a couple years ago, but didn't have much success. Now we are attempting to get a blueberry patch established (my favorite), and we have a huge wild raspberry bramble that should be getting pickable in a week or so. Love berry season!!! Have fun with all your strawberries and let us know what all you do with them!

We have been picking yet. I need to make up some jam from ones we picked froze last year.

Blueberries are my favorite too, Hannah! We have some wild black raspberries around our fences and woods. Not sure how they're going to be this year though. We haven't had any rain for a while now which means they'll probably be really small. We'll see...

As for the strawberries - I try to dehydrate most of them for snacking. I'll make some chocolate covered strawberries over the next few days. I'll probably make a pie or two. Of course we'll eat them everyday :) And if there's any left I'll probably freeze some for icecream.

It is too early here for strawberries, but the rhubarb is perfect so I need to take some of last year’s strawberries out of the freezer and make some strawberry-rhubarb jam. My mama is coming at the end of the month and since she is driving with my sister I can send several jars of her favorite jam home with her.

A little rain can straighten a flower stem. A little love can change a life.

What a treat that will be for your mama! As a kid I had some rhubarb - took a bite right out of the fresh plant. Haven't had it since LOL! I should give it a taste as a grown up. There are a few things I like now that I didn't as a kid :)

Oh, I love the rhubarb strawberry combo! There’s a fruits of the forest pie that has rhubarb, apple and mixed berries that’s pretty good!

I'm craving fresh strawberries, I've been buying mine at the market, but I would love to take a jont over to Hood River and buy up a bunch, I hope to make some strawberry jam this year, will be my first time( w/ the exception of freezer jam, and for some reason, that doesn't seem to count. ) I also LOVE blackberries! You ladies are inspiring and I needed a little pick me up to get my booty going and thinking ahead, so thank you. Summer inspiration!

You are correct, Debbie!! Freezer jam 100% counts!!

If given the opportunity try peach and rhubarb together. I made a crisp last year…oh. my. goodness. Amazing. And I’m not a huge rhubarb fan. :)

Our strawberry season is over. Made lots of strawberry shortcake for the family! Unfortunately, I can't eat them. Heavy sigh....

Heather I can not eat rhubarb raw, just to sour. But add a little sugar and put it in a desert and oh my magic happens.

I'll have to try it sometime LOL!

I finished all the strawberries I got, now the cherry tree is waiting. I made a recipe last night that calls for cranberries using the cherries (they're very tart) and it was pretty good. I'm thinking about dehydrating some and seeing how they taste. Not sure what to do with a bunch of tart cherries. Any suggestions?

Dehydrating is a good idea! You could add them to granola, granola bars, oatmeal, salads, etc. I’ve had cherry jam and it’s delicious!!!

I was rather skeptical - those cherries taste kind of awful right off the tree, but dehydrating them makes them a lot better. I'll probably do some more. I've had black cherry ice cream before - love it! But I'm not sure about tart cherry ice cream - the cherries might ruin the ice cream LOL! Maybe the chocolate and some extra sugar would balance it out...

Those tart cherries need a healthy dose of sugar, that’s for sure!! Are they pie cherries?

I have no idea what they are. My father in law planted them years ago and all he knows is it's one of 2 cherry trees LOL! The other one is the "good" one (they were much better tasting in past years) but it doesn't have any cherries on it this year. I found a recipe for pie filling to can that calls for tart cherries. If I can get to the store and get some clear gel in the next day or two I might try it. My mother in law picked some today to make a pie but she put them in the freezer so I have no idea when the pie will get made.

Omgosh, that’s funny! When I was first married I got invited to go pick cherries at this gentleman’s house. He and his wife were friends of my in-laws and were just the sweetest people. He had a garden that I can’t even describe!! It was like something out of a drawing. So my mom and I picked cherries that morning and then his wife showed us her canning kitchen that was all set up in her basement. And she handed me her cherry pie filling recipe before we left. I remember her saying that it was just like the canned filling from the store…only better! Haha. She was right! I still have it, written in her handwriting, even though it’s become a little battle scarred over the years. When I get home I will send you a copy, I think you will like it!
