Has anyone ever made their own sourdough bread? I have heard it is easier to digest among other things. Any thoughts? |

Denise, YES! I have my own sourdough starter going continually. It's a bit of a chore to get into the rhythm but well worth it. I got stated during the 2020 shut down...I was going bonkers with nothing to do when my small business was shut down. My first starter I did from scratch and it never really did take off. My second starter I bought a kit from KING ARTHUR FLOUR which I absolutely love! They send a booklet that explains exactly how to get your starter bubbly and some great recipes too. I've also found lots and lot of great recipes for sourdough "discard" on Pinterest. Sourdough is supposedly better for your health. We just have it because we love it so! Hope that helps. Sourdough baking is very satisfying. :D |

I have a bread machine - haven't used it in years, though. I love fresh baked bread. The trouble is, if you bake bread you need to eat it, and I have already gained back a few pounds that I am trying to lose - again! I have never made sour dough starter. May look into the King Arthur Flour kit.
What is sour dough "discard"? |

Linda, When "keeping" a sourdough starter there's a daily process of "discarding" a portion of it and adding back flour and water in ratio to your starter to keep it healthy and bubbly. We hate to just throw out the discard so we use it various recipes if not making bread that day. Discard can be used for lot of different recipes...from biscuits to muffins, pancakes, cookies, waffles...etc...etc. Sometimes I even bake an extra loaf and put it in the freezer to pull out at last minute if I want to make a French toast breakfast casserole or something similar and I don't have a full day to bake a loaf of bread. I've found it freezes nicely if not in there for terribly long. I've found some good posts on Pinterest as to how to get into the baking and keeping "routine" of sourdough. If you aren't able to use it daily it can be placed into the fridge for a week or so without harming it. :) |

MaryJane's book on bread making tells you how to do it and then gives you a book full of recipes. I personally have never tried sourdough bread but I have read that it is very good for you because of the process. |

Yes, it is supposed to digest easier. I tried some recently and really love it. |

Sourdough is my hubby's favorite type of bread so he's very supportive of me tending my starter and experimenting with various recipes. lol A loaf is easy to make and very gratifying! :D |

Denise, did you ever get a starter going?
Sour dough has been on my list of breads to bake, but living alone etc ... I don't know that I could keep up with it. I do bake bread regularly, which reminds me I need to get a loaf going. I am out of bread and have been for quite some time. |

No I haven't, Carole. We now have to have gluten free in the house and I was unsure about sourdough for that. |
