I thought I'd post my greeting now. Not sure what we have going on tomorrow. Maybe nothing, maybe something.
May you all be blessed with a happy, healthy, and safe new year!

I will be here at Copper Ridge, sitting in my room rather bored, they aren’t letting people out today for COVID reasons?
I am disgruntled.

I'm sorry Darlene. Don't they have anything going on there for the patients? They always had something happening around the holidays when my dad was at the Manor for PT.

Me too, I think; I'm trying to remember what normal was like. I know for us there will never be large gatherings again what with viruses and idiots with guns. Instead of paying $60 for a concert ticket I'll just stay home and buy a couple of CDs.

Sad though.

I would say life is fairly normal for us. Once I got over the fear of everything. 2019 was the worst, 2020 started getting to be ridiculous and 2021 most people stopped the fear mongering and bullying. Maybe because we changed states, I don't know.

Yes, Carol!! I am wishing all of you at our HenHouse a happy New Year and hopefully a return to normal whatever that will be now after 2 years of a Pandemic. I wonder what a conversation would have been like in say January 1, 1920, two years post the Spanish Flu Pandemic? If two women were sitting together over a cup of tea or coffee, what might have been their concerns and hopes for a normal year? Would their conversations feel similar to ours? They too had been through 2 years of high death rates, confusion, and panic. Plus many were still dealing with the effects of WWI and possibly losing a family member or dealing with someone who had PTSD which people didn't even know was a thing or how to treat it? I wish I had access to old letters where these feelings might have been addressed.

Winnie, I was thinking that my aunt who is 101 was born in 1920. Of course she is my oldest relative but wouldn't really have information on what that was like. I never heard any of my grandparents talk about it.

When my mother needed to get a passport she found out that her birth had never been registered. The lady at the registrar's office said that a lot of home births weren't registered because the doctors were too busy with the Spanish flu. Mom thought she was born in 1917 but when the census record became available we found she was born in 1918.

I wouldn't mind finding out I'm a year younger Judith! My grandmother recorded all her children's and grandchildren's births in a journal.

Judith, that is a fascinating story about your Mom's birthday registration. I have no doubt that back in 1918 through the Flu Pandemic, many odd records and experiences were felt by people. Because of broader news today, we often hear about Covid related events that people experienced, both good and not so good.

Denise, My Grandparents were raising my Mom (born 1914) and her older sister and brother during this Flue Pandemic and I also never hear a single story that my Mom told or that my Grandparents spoke of. I feel certain they had stories to tell and Mom's older siblings would have known about what happened in their schools. I have a small book with photos from that Flu and there are many photos of people with their cloth masks on and social distancing. One photo showed a school classroom being held outside with all the children in masks and the desks far apart. At that time, they did know about transmission precautions because of other diseases like TB and Measles which they applied to the Flu in efforts to preventing spreading it.
