Here’s what I worked on at Quilt Retreat this week. The first is a Trip Around the World quilt - this isn’t the final layout but all the blocks are done. The second is a kit called Linen Garden. I picked it up at Quilt Festival a couple years ago and finally got all the squares put together. I made the salt cellar pincushions as little gifts for my quilty friends.
What have y’all been up to?

Thinking of quilting, I have a question. Have any of you ever made a Double Irish Chain quilt? When my mother and I went to my Grandmas house...many years after she died, one of the things I found was two old wooden ironing boards, one was homemade and covered with part of an old quilt. My mother said it was a double Irish Chain, her mother had made. Of course I saved it...even if it was in tatters. That was almost forty years ago. But I often took out the little piece, I saved to admire it...still beautiful, even though very faded and worn. |

I made an Irish Chain a long time ago - it was one of my first quilts. I will have to check to see if it’s a double or not. It was an Eleanor Burns class that my mom taught. |

Laura, you were blessed to have a mom who taught quilting classes! My mom taught me to sew, her sister taught me to knit...a dish cloth. My mother, was asked to go to work, when I was 13. They needed an old age assistance lady, and my mom had been to college for two years. Only some of the school teachers had that much schooling or a degree. Of course the pay check appealed to her also. So with much sadness about leaving her family for a whole month...she went to Austin for the job training. Sadly when she returned home, between keeping house, full time work, sewing the clothing for our family, etc...teaching me to quilt...there just was not enough time. |
