To kick off the new year, we'll work on Farm Kitchen (Know Your Food, ChillOver ComeOver, Pay It Forward). With the winter weather upon us - I'm guessing we'll all have a little more time on our hands to work in the kitchen! I'm going to encourage you to pick ONE of the three and finish at least Beginner & Intermediate of that one. If you get more done - GREAT! If not, that's OK too!! Let's post often and share what we're doing, which ones we're going to work on and how we can encourage and swap ideas with each other!!

How is everyone doing working on these badges? I've ordered the chillover powder, so am waiting for it to arrive. I need to start making a list of recipes I want to try with it, though. I think this is the badge that concerns me the most though... I'm not a real big jello person. Has anyone done these badges yet? Thoughts on incorporating the chill over powder?

I am not a jello fan, either. I'm going to try using it to stabilize whipped cream for starters. I was thinking about using orange juice and sherbet for one recipe.

I have "In Defense of Food" by Michael Pollan if anyone would like to read it. I'd be happy to get it into the mail to you. I don't need it back.

Marilyn, I've made them before. I honestly forget that my bakeover pan is in the drawer. I like them, they're quick and easy. I made a breakfast one with potatoes, ham, eggs and cheese that was really good. They're a good way to use up leftovers in the fridge. Our henhouse did a bakeover recipe exchange awhile back and the girls had some really good recipes. I'm always running out of ideas of what to fix for meals...I should make an effort to make a bakeover once or twice a month.

Thanks, Debbie, I bought the pan, etc about ten years ago, but I have not made a bakeover in a while.

Thanks Debbie!

Marilyn - for bakeovers, I use the recipes from the henhouse too, but another one I really like is using the biscuit one, and then adding in my homemade canned pie filling to it - so it's almost like a turnover/dessert idea. Does that make sense?

How is everyone doing? I am finishing up reading the book for the "Know Your Food" badge. Over the next couple weeks I plan I doing the chillover recipes. I;m trying to finish up the "grease girl" one as well, though that is totally the incorrect name for the badge, lol. I don't remember which other ones I wanted to focus on this month, but I guess I should look here soon!

Yay, Debbie!

How is everyone doing on their badges? I sadly didn't have the time I thought I would...I've been working on UFO's! I did get them done on the weekend, so this week I plan to get working on those a bit more and finish up before the 31st :)

Omgosh Joyce!!! You finished your UFO's???? That is SO exciting!! I am waiting for the day that mine are finished, as well.
I have my Pay it Forward finished and 2 of the Know Your Food finished so I decided to start on the Chillover Badge. For some reason, my brain is just not getting how to work with this powder. I've been reading the recipes and there doesn't seem to be a set formula, they all seem different. I made the brown sugar chillover that MJ had in her Farm Kitchen magazine. It tastes like caramel mixed with whipped cream...not a bad combo! I think I am going to try her chocolate mold next. I have been craving chocolate pudding and I cannot find a cooked pudding mix anywhere in the stores...it's all instant. I really don't like the instant pudding texture. I have a couple of ideas for recipes in my head, just to get them worked out in the kitchen.
I just have my Home Insulation badges to apply for and then I can apply for School Marm in Cleaning UP! Pretty excited about that! I also sat down and did research this afternoon on Leatherworking and applied for the Beg and Int badges. I took Leatherworking back when I was in Jr High and haven't done it since then but would really like to try it again. My husband used to do it before we were married and then a little afterwards until he got too busy with life. He still has all of his supplies so I might get them out and dust them off. You have to make a project for the Exp level badge.
I have also been reading MJ's Milk Cow Kitchen book and reading about the Cheesemaking process. I'm not sure if I can get that one done in February. I might have to put it off until March or so. I won't be home to take care of the cheese pressing.

Joyce, I did not make the dessert bakeover today! Since two of the three dieters were having lunch with us, we had fruit roll ups, or a banana.
I thought this was a bit funny...when my son came in and sat down he never said a word. That is unusual, so when I got up to get something I had forgotten, I asked why he was so quiet. He said, "Mom, I'm busy eating!" So after two hamburgers and fries, and one boiled egg he ate the last patty and some fruit roll ups. He is hungry because the diet food in his house right now is not very satisfying. They have been on this for seven days and were looking hungry. ..all of them.
