I just had to try MaryJane's Birdie Shower Project from her April-May magazine on pages 84-85. Essentially, what you do is provide nesting materials that birds like to use in nest building.

On our recent trip to Italy, I saw this darling bird house and brought it home.

It has been up since our return April 16. Today, while sitting out on our porch, my husband and I saw a Carolina Wren take pine needles into the house!! They are building a nest!!!!!! It began to pour rain and thunder so I ran inside and pulled out MJF and started making my bird nest bag for my wrens to use if they wish. Page 84 lists many useful and favorite items that birds like to build a nest. So, I gathered the following ingredients for mine: cotton string, wool fleece, 100% wool yarn strings, jute strings, regular ray, and raffia pieces. Then I took a net bag, that was housing plastic Easter eggs, and put all the ingredients inside and tied both ends with a string. as suggested, I then took a crochet hook and pulled out items for easy access.

It has just about stopped raining and I have a perfect view from my kitchen sink window . I will update you on if I see the Wrens using some of my nest ingredients.

This was such an easy and fun project and I would suggest anyone to give it a try!! MaryJane describes the project as an actual party you could host where everyone brings nest materials to share and goes home with a bag for their yard. But if you have children, they would enjoy this fun project too. I had a blast doing it!!

Winnie,
That is beautiful birdhouse. So glad you have residents!
We are avid watchers here. JT put out bluebird houses a few years back and we have a family every year. It is right out the kitchen window. Whenever I cut the guys hair we toss the cut stuff outside. The fun part is seeing them take what we put out there. Thanks for sharing. So interesting!

Winnie I haven't made the nest bag yet but this morning I cleaned my hair brush and took the hair outside to let it go in the breeze. Sounded like a good plan but I didn't figure on Annie jumping up and catching the hair and eating it. I know she's a hunter and that goes for anything that flies but a wisp of hair - never entered my mind.

Sara, that Annie keeps you guessing!! LOL!!

So far, I can't tell if any of my nest materials were used. It has also been pouring rain a lot today and I have not been outside to see if the Wrens are still popping in and out of the birdhouse.

Love that birdhouse Winnie. Hope the wrench use your nesting materials. I should get busy and do the same thing for the birds here.

Don't think the birds have found my nest bag. I can see it from my kitchen window and haven't seen any interest in it.

I need to get out on the porch and get some things put out there for the birds. I see a lot of small wildlife going on out the front window when I am at my desk.

Sara, I haven't seen any interest in mine yet either. However, I won't really know about the Wren nest until all the babies have hatched and launched. Later this Summer, I will take a peek inside and let everyone know.
