Hi Wildflower Sisters!

I'm working on my Home Insulation Badge - Beginner Level - and I'm sharing with you all our findings.

The insulation in certain areas of our home is quite old. The previous owner had even put up Styrofoam in the perimeter of the home to add "insulation". Obviously, this is not going to keep the heat in as it should. One key thing we learned is that a well insulated house's roof won't melt the snow off as easily! For windows, we have older windows and newer windows in the home. However, all the older windows have storm windows that will be put on during winter months to be more effective. There are not any current credits available, but, I do have a husband who is handy, so our plan is to re-insulate the house January 2018, and replace all old windows July/August 2018.

We need to do this, we need to insulate the attics and the floors where we can get under them (we can't get under the dining room...but everything else is accessible from the basement or crawl space. And we have lots of old windows that have storm windows but are still drafty. I'm not sure why they are still drafty, hubby has caulked them all twice and still there are drafts.... We also probably need insulation in the walls of the additions but we haven't checked yet but most of the house is rock so it can't be insulated.

Sabrina, a lot of people here put up a plastic wrapping between the storm windows for drafts . Have you tried that? We also have used a tape caulking, especially for leaky windows, in the winter. It's fabulous - but oh, what a pain to get off in summer when you want to open the windows!

Tape caulking...hmm idk what that is. No I haven't tried the plastic wrap, is it like saran wrap or something specifically for windows. When you say between the windows is it up against one side? I'm not sure how I would get to the top to put it in....

Tape Caulking is this sticky gray stuff - you put it on the inside of all your windows and it seals out air leaks. Saran wrap - I'm not sure if it's something specifically for windows or not, as we've never done it. We've used tape caulking until we could replace the windows with great great success! This coming from a very cold, snowy and windy wintery place.

Hubby bought a water heater blanket and window film Friday, hoping he puts them on today because we are having a cold snap again and I can't get warm!!!

Did you get warmed up yet, Sabrina? I know how that is. We have a really old house, and I don't think it's insulated very well. The back of our house faces west, and there is no wind break back there, so the wind just whips at the back of our house. It gets really cold here too. :( I feel for you!
