Since I have this NEED to be productive even when I am being a slacker, I figured I would plan and post the merit badge challenges for April... partially so I can hopefully better plan, as I STILL have not started two of the projects for March (hiding my head in shame).

April is National Garden Month, as well as the 22nd being Earth Day and the 28th being National Arbor Day. As a HenHouse, we are also preparing for the Jubilee the first weekend of May. Soooooo here are the challenges, if you decide to accept ;)

Garden Gate:
- Bee Good to Your Mother Earth
- Gaining Ground
- Heirlooms Forever
- 3 R's Rule
Make It Easy:
- In the Garden
Outpost:
- Speak for the Trees
Farmgirl Kitchen:
- BakeOver Makeover
Stitching & Crafting:
- Sew Wonderful

I just got the books for a couple of those. So here's my goal:

Bee Good to You Mother Earth - Beginner
Gaining Ground - Beginner
Heirlooms Forever - Beginner and Intermediate
3 R's Rule - Beginner
Speak for the Trees - Beginner and Intermediate
Sew Wonderful - Intermediate
Bakeover Makeover - Beginner, Intermediate, Expert

That's quite a goal. So I won't be too disappointed if I don't get all of them, but I think they're doable.

I just went through my binder of merit badge requirements. Here is what I am aiming for for the month of April:

Bee Good to Your Mother Earth-INT
Heirlooms Forever-BEG and INT
Speak for the Trees-BEG and INT
Farmgirl Kitchen-Bakeover Makeover
Sew Wonderful-EXP

Plus, I need to continue the Embroidery that I didn't get finished in March, both INT and EXP levels. I have a couple of lists now of merit badge goals for the month of April and those that I'm still working on and some I have planned for the summer. SO much easier to keep on track and focused that way!

That is how I feel about it Debbie!!! I find that I am meeting more of my goals by having an outline of what I want to accomplish. Would it help if on a separate thread I posted what challenge I was going to put out there each month??? I already have the year figure out, lol.

When I was looking through the badges this morning, I noticed that the EXP level of Stargazing Chicks wants you to find some more elusive objects in the sky...which got me thinking....is anyone else going to be in the path of the Solar Eclipse this August 21st??? It's path is going to literally be one mile north of our farm! They're saying that we are going to have thousands of people invading our little town that week! We're going to be hosting an eclipse party out here so I think that would take care of a couple of the requirements of that badge.

Wow cool! An eclipse party sounds like so much fun! I haven't looked into it at all. Perhaps I should...

I'm a little bummed about the bakeover makeover merit badge. I wasn't planning on getting serious about my eating habits until Rory was one, but last weekend I just had this "I can't take it anymore" moment. Since the new moon was last Monday (and that's supposed to be the best time to change a habit) I decided to go ahead and start then. I still want to do the bakeover makeover but I'm not eating bread right now, and there's no way to do it without a crust! :/

Here is one of my bake overs for the intermediate badge. I will post the recipe below.

This was inspired by a turkey bacon bravo sandwich from panera. I used leftover turkey breast, and it was dry, so I made a roux-based sauce to mix in. That fixed the problem!

I used a ten inch skillet for this recipe.

Coat pan with olive oil. Cook 2 pressed garlic cloves. Do not Brown! Add 1 chopped tomato, a few crumbled bacon slices and 2 cups turkey breast meat. To make the sauce: Melt 1 T butter add 1 T flour. Mix 2 minutes. Do not brown! Add 1 cup milk, and whisk, without boiling, until thick. Add 1 T Dijon mustard. Add the sauce to the skillet and mix together. Sprinkle with mozzarella cheese. Add basic crust rolled out to fix the skillet, and cook at 425 for 20 minutes.

I also used this pizza-inspired recipe. I often make this without meat, using whatever veggies I have on hand. This is just the basic go-to that I use.

Cook 1 lb sausage and 2 cloves garlic pressed in a little olive oil. Add 1 16oz jar tomatoes cook until broken down. Add oregano and basil. Add mozzarella cheese in a layer. Using the basic crust recipe, add oregano to the flour. Roll out crust to fit skillet, and cook at 425 for 20 minutes.

Erin, that looks yummy!!!! I love having the picture with the recipe! Should we just post our recipes on here for our exchange or would everyone like the recipes written out on cards?

I was a little unsure how to proceed with the recipes. I think posting it should be ok, unless you're participating in the swap. I can verify with Brian.

Well.....things are coming along....hopefully I will get them all pulled together by the end of the month. If not, it might be the first part of May...but they will get finished! I finished the embroidery on my last pillowcase. I was short just a yard of the green floss that I was using and I didn't want to have to order more so I used a different floss that actually matched. I didn't think about it not being colorfast bc it was hand dyed...ugh! So when I sprayed the marks out, I have a little bit of green that bled through onto my pillowcase. I'm going to see if I can get it out...if not, good lesson learned!
I am almost finished with the embroidery for my hotpads. I have the handles for my bakeover takeover. I am taking my reading with me on the airplane next week so I can get caught up with that. I got a little sidetracked with this being Easter weekend and I finished a couple of other badge requirements...I made an Italian Easter bread for part of my language badge and am decorating a lamb cake for part of my cake decorating badge. It's going to be a surprise for my little grand boys. I'll have to take their picture with it! I imagine one of them will think it's funny to cut the head off and eat it....haha!
I also have a couple of bakeover recipes to post. Do you have swap partners figured out, Shannon?

I'm working on the books for Bee Good and Gaining Ground. I am done with beginner Speak for Trees, working on submitting it and I should be able to apply for Intermediate after tomorrow morning (we're going to a state park for school). Haven't started the book for Heirlooms, but have it and have the planting part done. 3 R's, I don't know how to get a stick or whatever to stay in bad weather on the tin lids. How have you girls done this?? Sew Wonderful haven't started yet, but shouldn't take me long. Bakeover I submitted Beginner and Intermediate, will work on Expert. I feel a little stumped on the dessert bakeover... brownie crust would be easiest for me but nothing sounds good for the bottom...

Shannon, I have emailed Brian twice about our idea to do an online workshop for the expert level badge of Know Your Food...and surprisingly, have not heard back from him. Any ideas???

Debbie - there have been a few times I haven't heard back from him, and I'm wondering if he doesn't get all the messages.. or is swamped! You could always try again (maybe actually through the forum?) or give him a call.

Ok, girls...I heard back from Cydnie at the office. She said if we wanted to do an online "course" for our expert level Know Your Food that would be great and she was looking forward to reading about it later!
