February is Responsible Pet Owner's Month. In honor of our fur babies, I suggest we work on our "Pampered Pets" badge in Outpost. My goal is to complete the beginner and intermediate level. I would like to do the expert level as well, but I'm too "chicken" to drive on the ice/snow ;) So who will be working to complete this badge with me?

I think I can work on those with you....I'm not too jazzed about this winter driving, either, so I think I will stick with the Beginner and Intermediate, as well. Since the first of December we've had 3 feet of snow...and we're expecting another foot tonight. It's like the winters that we used to have...and the local paper says it's the most snow we've had in Central Oregon in the past 25 years!

Yes, Shannon, I have! A couple of weeks ago I had to run some errands for my mom. We still have parking lots covered in ice and snow and she was NOT about to get out of the car if she didn't have to! She needed to go to PetCo and I thought here was a perfect opportunity to do some research on pet food! So, I ran her return in for her and had a nice chat with the head of the pet food department...hahaha! I did some research on what we have been feeding our outside cat and even though he seems to like it...I could do better by him! Should have it finished soon!

How is it going Debbie?

Joyce?

Anyone else working on it???

I should be wrapping up mine here soon, and turning them in. It is just a matter of finding the time.... and energy!

Ok Gals - I've applied for beginner, and Intermediate. Here's some interesting info I found:

First, my favourite recipe for tick/flea repellant for our cats:
8oz. apple cider
4oz. warm water
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda
20 drops of Citronella essential oil
8 drops of Melaleuca essential oil
8 drops Rosemary essential oil
Shake together in a spray bottle, spray and come through hair of cat daily.

The other thing that I found really essential is learning about DE (Diotamecious Earth)for our chickens and their chicken lice. We spread it in their dirt baths, surround their coop in it, and spread it on them weekly as chicken lice is also on the rise here. Quite the task when you've got 70 feathered friends (between turkeys and chickens) but well-worth it for prevention!

I love love love DE!!! It worked wonderful for our chickens when we had them, and works well for cats and dogs as well, for fleas. You can also put a little brewers yeast and garlic in your dog's food and just brewers yeast in your cat's food for flea control.

My favorite dog shampoo is mixing 2-3 T of Dr Bronner's unscented castile soap with 4 C water and 1 C apple cider vinegar. You whisk it together and put it in a large squeeze bottle. You don't need much of the shampoo, and it works great!!!

Joyce - I was surprised to see your tick/flea repellent for the cats... for some reason I had thought that essential oils were toxic to a cat's liver. Sounds like I need to do more research :)

Shannon - I never knew that....the recipe comes from a trusted source, but now I shall look into that further, because you could be right!!
