At a garage sale last Saturday I saw a bunch of thimbles. Several were in 3 small display racks and some were just loose in a box. I couldn't make up my mind on them so I asked how much for ALL of them. The man said "ALL of them?" I said yes. He said he had sold just a few of them earlier that morning, and then he said "$15.00." I said "SOLD!" They were made of metal, plastic, wood, glass; some had moveable parts or had raised additions on them; many had animals, birds, or flowers painted on them. There were several that had advertisements on them (2 from a funeral home?), a few state souvenirs, one is made of abalone, a few pewter, one was cloisonne, and one was clear glass with a Christmas wreath added to it. One was so small it wouldn't even fit on my pinkie - could it have been a child's thimble? When I got home and counted them there were 102 thimbles.

Here's a picture of most of my treasure except for the single ones.

Did I do good, or what? Now to decide where/how to display them. I also have about 37 thimbles from Ed's sister's estate. I will photograph them later.

WOW! Sweet! Great find! Nice souvenir thimbles. It would be interesting to know the story behind the thimbles. Did this individual visit all of the places? Were they bought for them by others. The advertisement one were probable from "send so many proof of purchase .... etc"

Do you know what you will do with them?

Wow Linda, you hit a great find! I have collect ed over the years with help from friends and family. Most are souvenirs. I have one a friend brought back from Dusseldorf, Germany when he went over for his company. Really beautiful. The display racks are pretty too.

I am going to look for a large display case and then have a piece of plexiglass cut to fit the front. Then, with hinges and a small latch, I can be sure none of the thimbles falls out.

There is one from Ireland. I have one given to me that I will add to the collection - it is made from Elk horn from Finland.

Wow!! You did fabulous!! I see a few that look like they came from the Franklin Mint. They had a thimble of the month collection in the 1980's, They all have markings on the inside from the company that made them.

What a fun, interesting find :)! Don't you just love when you come across something like this that just has "your" name on it? You did great. Now to find a big enough display case to hold them all. I have seen things at antique stores that would probably work great, if not too pricey!
