This where we can post about the language/culture we're learning about. You can also post how to count to ten, and the traditional greeting. This will work for some languages. If you're learning about Russian, Chinese, Japanese, etc. it might be a little difficult to post the language. |

I am debating if I want to learn Irish or German. What is everyone looking at studying? I would like to try to do something different from everyone else, so we can all learn something new, without being redundant. Does anyone have their culture selected as of yet? |

I have been going back and forth on this one for awhile. I've been wanting to do it and have been trying to decide whether to do a "practical" language, like Spanish.....or something less "practical", but more fun, in my opinion, like Italian. Since I already know how to count to ten and say hello and goodbye in Spanish, I really wouldn't be learning anything new...and that's what it's all about. So I am going to tackle Italian!!! |

Shannon, hope you don't mind, but I'm definitely going for Irish on the intermediate level. I hope this doesn't stop you! My Mom was full blooded. I like learning something that the English tried to kill off in my people! It feels like my ancestors would want me to help keep it alive. |

I was considering Indian culture. As in India, just to clarify :) I think they have multiple languages there though, so I'll have to look into that a bit. I'll have to get a little more specific with the region, I think. Andrea, as you know I'm drawn to the Irish as well, but I thought I should branch out a little. :) |

Erin, have you watched any movies from India? I've heard that they make more movies than the US does. |

I am going to choose German. My husband is from German descent. I already speak dutch fluently and can speak our country's second language (french) a little bit, so I decided to branch away from those. |

I haven't watched many Indian movies, but I love Bride and Prejudice. It's a modern Bollywood version of Pride and Prejudice mixing UK India and the US. I've probably watched that one at least ten times. I love the songs in it! |

I haven't seen that one, will check it out. Have seen a few and enjoyed most of them. They did break into songs in most of the ones I saw, often with delightfully cheesy lines like,"This poem has no meaning without you.", |

I have been studying Irish language for about three weeks, so would like to join in with you on this one. I have also been working on my family genealogy for many years, mostly on the Scottish side as it was easier. For the last 6 months or so have delved into my Irish side and got excited about learning the language, as I want to try to take a trip there next year. Dia duit, Fáilte, Conas atá tuú. Just getting started, but having fun with it. Shannon or Andrea hope to hear more about how it's going with you.

Here is my study on the German culture: Germany has many major intellectual - both religious and secular - figures associated with this country. Johann Gutenberg, Albert Einstein, Goethe and Beethoven to name a few. Interestingly, my husband's family claims to possibly be related to Einstein :) Oktoberfest is a folk festival that runs mid-September to the first week of October for 16 days. It's an important part of the culture, being held since 1810. The two main religions in Germany are Catholic and Protestant. There used to be a substantial Jewish population, but after the holocaust, there remains but a mere few thousand. Cuisine varies according to region, with poultry, beef and pork being the favourite meat choice, the latter being the most popular. Germans are known for their pork sausages. Breakfast consists of rolls or bread with jam, cold cuts, or cheese and sometimes a boiled egg. This is how I grew up in the Dutch culture, so I found this interesting that we share this custom. Germans are known for their breads, with over 300 varieties! Sports play a large role in the culture of Germany - with football being the most important.
one - eins two - zwei three - drei four - vier five - funf six - sechs seven - sieben eight - acht nine - neun ten - zehn
Traditional greeting is:Hallo for Hello :) |

Andrea Go maith. Mora na maidine dhuit. Whew....learning slowly. How long have you been learning? I need to make time to practice everyday, to try and make more progress.

Hmm I'll have to look at the actual requirements but in theory German should be pretty easy for me to do since I've lived in this culture for the past 2 years (and for another 2 years 11 years ago). |

Been wanting to learn Irish for over 30 years! But only seriously trying for a few months and not practicing as faithfully as I should be! It is not an easy language. |

I believe I will join you all. I have chosen to learn the Czech language. Specifically, I will work on cestina or cesky jazyk which belong to the west Slavic sub branch of Slavic languages. My paternal great-grandparents came here from Bohemia. Dobrou noc (Good night.)(I wish I knew how to make all the little symbols that go above the words. I will learn.) |

I grew up on Latin! Between church and our school lessons I used to understand quite a bit of it. I actually miss it. However, I did terrible in my lessons. |
